Last week we asked if you had an antique or collectible that was given to you, but you had no idea why the person thought you might want it.
In reference to that request, we received the following from Diane V. "I had to laugh when I saw your request about antique gifts that were received and have no idea why we received them. Back in the early 70's, when I was newly engaged to my husband, his mother gave me a child's china tea set that had Christmas themed art on each piece. I was only in my early 20's at the time, I had no kids, and it wasn't even Christmas time! I politely thanked her, all the while wondering "what the heck am I going to do with this?" I even looked at my fiance to see if he had any ideas but he just smiled and kind of ignored it. One of his sisters made the comment "she must REALLY like you!" and everyone laughed. Years later when she noticed that I had it displayed in my house, I asked her what made her pick it out for me and she just said that it was just a special gift from her to me. So I never really found out why that tea set made it into my hands but as the years went on, I noticed that she gave many "quirky" gifts to other members of the family, but she gave them all with love. She was the sweetest, most caring lady anyone could meet, and now that she is gone, I look at this tea set with such fond memories. Thanks for letting me share my story, I love the newsletter!" Diane" Here is a link to a photo of Diane's tea set:
If you have a story to share with our readers, please email it to phil@Bignews.biz and we will include it in an upcoming issue.
For next week's issue --
Let's say you are out taking a walk in your neighborhood and you notice that one of your neighbors is throwing out an antique that is very valuable. Do you quietly pick up the item to bring home and then sell it yourself? Do you take it home and keep it? Do you go up to your neighbor's door and let them know that you think the item has value? Does it matter if it is a close friend, or someone you only know casually? Let us know what you would do, or if you have ever been in this situation. We look forward to posting many of your responses in an upcoming newsletter.
And this request for identification --
"Hi Phil, This piece was given to me in December 1976 by a close friend who had inherited when his parents died in 1952. He had no idea where they had got it from. It is a wooden plate with metal Buddha and dragon figures on it and semi precious stones. I would appreciate any information on it's origin. Thanks, Jacqueline" You can see photos of Jacqueline's plate here:
Do you have an item in your collection that you need help identifying or just would like to share with our readers. Drop me an email with a photo attached and we'll include it in our newsletter and on our Facebook page. Send them to me at phil@Bignews.biz
We have even more interesting items that need to be identified. They will be posted in our next newsletter and on facebook within the upcoming weeks.

"When my niece, Greta, was just old enough to learn songs, her mother taught her several. On a visit to her grandmother's home, someone decided to tape Greta as she sang. Every time the audio cassette was played back, Greta would pronounce proudly, "That's Greta in there." --Sheila---

9. A Vintage Recipe
Be sure to check out our vintage recipe archive online at:
Over 1200 wonderful vintage recipes are listed.
Last week Lois D. asked for a casserole recipe that included spam, potatoes, cheese and egg.
In response, Mike sent us the following: "Hi, Sounds like a variation on a Greek moussaka, with Spam replacing lamb! Potatoes instead of aubergine (eggplant) is quite a common variant, I think, when aubergines aren't readily available (or expensive, or just not liked!)"
10. A vintage recipe request from a reader:
As with collectibles, people also have very strong feelings about foods from their past. Sometimes these special recipes get lost. This section is to help people who are looking for lost recipes from their past. If you submit a request, please include the geographical region where you tasted the recipe.
"My step-father recently passed away at the age of 82. My siblings and I were all talking about some of the crazy things he used to do, like putting maple syrup on his macaroni and cheese! when my sister said how she always loved his "Lost Bread". Unfortunately none of us can find the recipe that he used. We just remember the main ingredients which were bread (with the crusts cut off), milk, eggs and cheddar cheese but we don't know anything else about it. He always said that it was his favorite thing to have when he was a little boy so I know it goes back to the early 20th century. Thanks! Beth P."
If you can help this reader with this recipe, please forward it to email@example.com . If you have a vintage recipe request send it to firstname.lastname@example.org and we might just publish it here.
