"Hi Phil,
I've collected American Dinnerware for over 30 years and have over 300 pieces in my collection. The pieces I like are cream-colored with a wide variety of decals, and even though they were produced by a variety of companies like Harker Pottery, Homer Laughlin, and Universal, and what ties the collection together is that they are all lined with red trim. I started with just one pretty cake lifter..." Click here to finish reading Kathy's story: http://on.fb.me/1g4ns3B

Do you have a funny story you would like to share? These stories can bring a smile to someone's face and in this day and age, can't we all use a smile? Make someone feel good by sharing it with us. Send it to newsletter@tias.com and we may publish it here. Here's one from one of our readers:

"I live in the northeast where we have had a very cold and snowy winter.
Last week we had a 45 degree sunny day so I took my class of 4 year olds
outside so we could look for some signs of spring. We found crocuses that
were about to bloom, some buds on trees and even heard a cardinal that was
chirping away. As we were walking back toward the door of the school, we
saw a little sparrow sitting on the roof, right above a birdhouse that was
hung outside the door. As I gathered my students at the doorway the
sparrow began to chirp loudly and constantly, as though he was yelling at
us, so I told my class that we had better get inside because the sparrow
was telling us that it wanted to go back into its birdhouse. With that,
one of the little boys in my class looked up at me and quizzically
asked....."You talk bird?" Sheila from the Northeast US

9. A Vintage Recipe
Be sure to check out our vintage recipe archive online at: http://www.tias.com/newsletter/topics/A%20Vintage%20Recipe.html Over 1200 wonderful vintage recipes are listed.

Last week, Margo P. in Cleveland, OH. was looking for a vintage cake recipe with fruit cocktail. We received quite a number of responses, most of which nearly the same! Thank you to Mary Ann L. (who says this is called a "dump" cake), Kay E., and Susan M. for their submissions. This recipe is from Barbara E, who says "This is the recipe that I used to make when we were first married in the 50's." Thanks again to all who responded!

Fruit Cocktail Cake

1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 #303 can fruit cocktail
TOPPING
1 cup brown sugar, loosely packed
1/2 cup pecans, chopped

1. Mix all dry ingredients. Beat egg then add dry ingredients and drained fruit cocktail. When draining fruit cocktail, leave some juice to moisten the batter. Pour into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch pan or a cookie sheet, which makes the cake about an inch high.

2. Mix topping ingredients together and sprinkle over cake batter. Let set a few minutes to get the brown sugar wet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 45 minutes. Cut into squares and serve with whipped cream on top.

10. A vintage recipe request from a reader:

"Does anyone have a good (preferably vintage) recipe for sloppy joes? I can't seem to find one that tastes like what I ate as a kid in the 50s. I seem to remember it having a small amount of rice in it, but I can't believe my mom would boil rice just to add to sloppy joes." Jennie from CA

If you can help this reader with this recipe, please forward it to recipes@tias.com.

As with collectibles, people also have very strong feelings about foods from their past. Sometimes these special recipes get lost. This section is to help people who are looking for lost recipes from their past. If you submit a request, please include the geographical region where you tasted the recipe.

If you have a vintage recipe request send it to recipes@tias.com and we might just publish it here.

Be sure to check out our vintage kitchen collectibles section online at: http://www.tias.com/showcase/1/Kitchen_Collectibles/1.html
