8. A Vintage Recipe

Last week Darlene F requested a jello recipe called Avocado Jello. We received six recipes! Thank you for your contributions! We hope one of these is what you were looking for, Darlene.

This might be the recipe that Darlene F, Oregon was looking for. I was given it in the 60s or 70s.

Avocado Jell-O with Orange Sauce

1 3 oz pkg. lemon jello
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup hot water
Stir together until thoroughly dissolved and chill until syrupy.

Meanwhile: combine:
1 3 oz pkg. softened cream cheese
1/2 cup mayo
1 can (7 3/4 oz) frozen avocado dip
2 Tbl. Lemon juice
1/8 to 1/4 tsp liquid hot pepper seasoning
1/4 cup finely chopped green onion or celery (or 1/4 cup each)
Stir the avocado mixture into the partially thickened jello. Pour into a 1 qt mold or 6 individual molds. Chill until well set. Unmold. Garnish with orange slices or sections. Serve with or without dressing

Orange Cream Dressing

Combine:
1/4 cut thawed frozen orange concentrate with
1/4 cup mayo
Grated rind of 1 orange
1/4 tps hot pepper seasoning.
Just before serving fold in 1 cup heavy cream, whipped. Makes 1 1/2 cups.

Darlene F, Oregon. was looking for a recipe for avocado jello. Here's
one I found on the internet:

AVOCADO JELLO
1 lg. box lime Jello
2 pkg. gelatin
3 c. boiling water
3/4 c. sugar
1/3 c. mayonnaise
1/2 c. cream
1 c. avocado, mashed

Boil Jello, gelatin, boiling water and sugar; cool. Mix well the
mayonnaise, cream and mashed avocado; add to above mixture.
Refrigerate.

Avocado Jello

1 cup avocado, mashed
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup cream
3/4 cup sugar
6 ounceslime Jell-O gelatin
2 envelopes knox gelatin
1/2 cup water
2 cups hot water

1.Dissolve gelatin in water.
2.Pour hot water over jello, mix well.
3.Add gelatin.
4.Put all ingredients in blender.
5.Mix well and chill.

Avocado Jell-O

Yes, avocado can even be made into dessert—it’s a stone fruit, after all—just like apricots, peaches and plums. While it may be mistaken for lime, one bite shows that there’s no tartness—just a light, smooth sweetness. Recipe yields 6 servings.

Ingredients

1 package (3 ounces) lime-flavored gelatin
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon lime juice
2 fully ripened avocados, halved, pitted, peeled and coarsely chopped
Extra avocado, berries, lime wedges, lime peel and/or citrus segments
for garnish (optional)

For Berry Purée

1 cup blackberries or strawberries
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon lime juice

Preparation

In bowl, prepare gelatin following package directions; stir in sugar and lime juice. Chill until mixture is the consistency of egg whites, stirring occasionally.
In bowl of food processor, place avocado; add gelatin mixture; process until smooth and creamy.
Spoon mixture into six 2/3-cup molds or 1-quart serving dish; cover and chill until firm.
Quickly dip molds into hot water; turn out onto serving plates. Serve with Berry Purée (below), and if desired, diced avocado and lime wedges.
Berry Purée: Process 1 cup blackberries or strawberries with 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon lime juice until smooth. Strain into small cup; cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Beautiful summer dessert, bright with fresh fruit and flavor. Appealing to the taste buds as well as the eye. A favorite at every summer picnic
Ingredients

1 box each, sugar free Lime, Lemon and Strawberry Jello
1 cup coarsely chopped strawberries
1 cup fat free sour cream
1 cup Thick & Creamy Light Lime Yogurt
1 medium avocado, peeled, pitted and chopped
1 lime, juice and zest
6 parfait glasses

Serves: 6

Keep in mind that many of these recipes were created at a time when there were no worries about such things as raw eggs, for example - so modern kitchen safety should prevail.

This section is to help people who are looking for lost recipes from their past. If you submit a request, please include the geographical region where you tasted the recipe.

"In the late fifties or early sixties, either Ladies Home Journal or Good Housekeeping or Better Homes and Gardens had a wonderful recipe for an three layered angel food cake that had a whipped coffee flavored icing in between each layer topped by more of the icing with toasted slivered almonds on to. I cannot find the recipe my mother had and loved the cake and would love to make it again.
