The gemstone Amethyst is the Birthstone for February. It is also the Zodiac stone for the constellation of Pisces. Amethyst is associated with spirituality, wisdom, sobriety, and security. Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral quartz and is a popular gemstone. Although it must always be purple to be amethyst, it can and does have a wide range of purple shades. Also, everyday, we post a "This Date In History" story on our Facebook page, along with an item for sale on http://www.tias.com that relates to the event. We're also highlighting one item each day that we find particularly interesting - something that's very unusual! Check it out!

It's always fun to see what other people own and treasure! Although we can't put the pictures in this newsletter, please visit our Facebook page to view the images and learn about those items. Please let us know if you'd like us to highlight one of your favorite collectibles!

Mark O., one of our readers, sent images in hopes someone can help him identify vases he owns: "They are 16 inches high and 7 in long (oblong shaped). There aren’t any type of markings anywhere - just the twist where the glass was flattened." Any ideas out there?

Last week Donna K. requested a recipe for "...Apple Cake that was on the back of Wilderness Apple Pie Filling Can back in the 70’s..."

We had a huge response! Here are a few - thanks to everyone who contributed!

From Jean, Ellie D., Pam L.:
WILDERNESS CAKE
2 eggs
1 c. sugar
2/3 c. oil
2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves or nutmeg
1 can Wilderness or Thank You brand pie filling (peach, apple & cherry are all good)
Nuts are optional

By hand (no mixer) mix eggs, sugar and oil. Add flour and soda. Add pie filling. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. This recipe can be prepared in the cake pan itself.
--

From Carol T:
Apple Cake recipe on the back of Wilderness Apple Pie Filling Can.

3 eggs
1 yellow cake mix
1 can Wilderness apple pie filling

Beat eggs; add cake mix and then pie filling. Pour into greased, 9 x 13-inch pan.

TOPPING:

3/4 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. flour
1 tbsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. butter

Combine brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and butter. Sprinkle on cake. Bake at 350 degrees for
30 to 40 minutes.
--

From Dr. Ladybug:
I found this online and I am hoping that this is the recipe for which Donna is searching.
--
Here's a recipe that a friend of mine (when I was growing up) used and loved for camping. They copied it off a can of Wilderness Pie Filling back in the 1970's.

1 can Wilderness Pie Filling (any flavor)
1 box Jiffy cake mix (white or yellow)
1/3 cup instant (or 1 min) oats
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 stick butter or margarine

Pour pie filling into ungreased pan. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl and then spread dry over the pie filling. Melt butter and pour melted butter to cover dry mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Note: if you use Apple pie filling you may wish to include 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1 teaspoon nutmeg. Enjoy warm or fully cooled.

NOTE:
I find the pie filling sweet enough right out of the can and you may wish to adjust the sweetness to suit your individual or family tastes. Jiffy cake mixes can be difficult to find (small blue and white boxes), so if you cannot find them a regular cake mix may be substituted, but remember to use only 1/2 of the box contents.
--

From Marlin G., Sheila R., Lynn C. and Stacy B.:

3 cans Wilderness apple pie filling
1 box spice cake mix
2 sticks butter
1 c. nuts (pecans or walnuts)

In 9 x 13 inch pan, spread apple pie filling evenly over bottom of pan. Sprinkle cake mix evenly over apples. Sprinkle with nuts. Cut butter into small patties - lay on top. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.

9. As with collectibles, people also have very strong feelings about foods from their past. Sometimes these special recipes get lost. This section is to help people who are looking for lost recipes from their past. If you submit a request, please include the geographical region where you tasted the recipe.

If you have a vintage recipe request send it to recipes@tias.com and we might just publish it here.
