1. Back during WWII (or maybe it started during the depression years and carried on), when things were in short supply due to the war effort, there was a popular saying: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without”. A reader would like to know if anyone has information about this item:
I bought this little milk glass mug with a scene of a little boy "writing" the words 'good luck' in the snow. I searched on who made this but, no luck. I did find this same image on a post card, souvenir spoon and plate. Do you have any information you can share?
View pictures here (and you don't need a Facebook account to view the image):
Can anyone help this reader determine what this tool might have been used for?
I was wondering if you could help me identify an old tool that I recently picked up at an antique market. It has a hollow, wooden handle and a metal spike at the end. The grate part reads "PATENT JULY 90." It measures around 50" from top to bottom and the metal part is 5" wide. I've attached photos. If you know anyone that could identify this or knows more about it, I would appreciate it if you directed me to someone who may know.
Thank you for your time,
ps It is mechanical and you can pull the top handle upwards and the spike goes through the hollow wooden part but the grate part is screwed into the wood and is stable.

Carol T. sent in this recipe - right in time for the onslaught of cucumbers that are about to ripen in the backyard garden! Thanks, Carol!
Bread & Butter Pickles
One gallon of cut up spiny cucumbers (the bumpy kind) in slices
2 red or yellow Bell peppers (sliced in rings)
4 cups of onions (sliced in rings)
3 gloves of garlic (chopped)
1/3 cup non-iodized salt
5 cups sugar
3 cups vinegar
1 ˝ teaspoon Turmeric
1 ˝ teaspoon celery seed
2 Tablespoons mustard seed
1 ˝ teaspoon pickling spice
Combine cucumbers, onions, garlic, peppers and salt; (I place them in my dishpan) mix well and cover with ice and let stand in refrigerator for 3 hours. Then remove ice and drain well. Pack into jars (makes 4 quarts or 8 pints). Combine sugar, vinegar, turmeric, celery seed, mustard seed, and pickling spice. Stir until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil, pour over cucumbers in jars then pour back into pan, bring to boil again and pour back into jars. Clean the rims of all liquid and seal with flats and rings. Place on counter, cover with towel (to keep drafts of cool air from hitting them) until sealed.
9. As with collectibles, people also have very strong feelings about foods from their past. Sometimes these special recipes get lost.
