Garnet, the birthstone for January, signifies eternal friendship and trust and is the perfect gift for a friend. Garnet, derived from the word granatum, means seed, and is called so because of the gemstone's resemblance to a pomegranate seed. Visit http://www.tias.com for more examples of the various birthstones available.

We've received a number of Christmas stories in the last couple of weeks. Here's another from Enola N.:
"Reading the newsletter just now and about Linda finding her Christmas bicycle reminded me of another story –

My parents were divorced and my Mom worked incredibly hard to provide for us three girls – needless to say, money for gifts was hard to come by for a waitress in the 60’s. I was the eldest and had to help my mother with the younger girls and often had to know “secrets” to help her out, so keeping a secret from me was hard for her. I don’t believe I was snooping, because I wasn’t a snooper, but I came across the entire stack of Christmas gifts when I was about 8. I had asked for a bride doll. Well, there in the stack was 2 of them! I just knew the bigger one with brown hair and eyes and stockings and a pearl necklace was mine! I quickly got out of there BUT fretted for two weeks that maybe, just maybe I wouldn’t get the one “I just knew was mine” – I was so happy Christmas morning when I did get the one I wanted. I have it to this day. I have all the original clothes with the added treasure of my aunt having taken my doll to the dressmaker who custom made my bride dress from my design and had my doll dressed exactly like me for my wedding day! Enola G. N"

Pam J sent in this vintage recipe from "Heinz Book of Salads from 1925":

"I haven't tried this recipe, but I thought it was interesting. It's from a time when sardines were a household staple (before canned tuna), and when food companies were creating sometimes odd recipes to promote their products."

Sardine Sandwich

Remove skin and bones from sardines and mash to a paste with a little Heinz Salad Cream. Add Heinz Sandwich Relish, allowing twice as much Relish as sardine paste. Mix well and spread between buttered slices of whole wheat or white bread. Put a crisp leaf of lettuce on top of sardine mixture just before putting sandwhich together. Serve with plain green salads, Spinach Salad or Tomato Salad."
