 1. Welcome! Mama's Kitchen is a free newsletter about kitchen collectibles. This newsletter is designed to be entertaining and educational, but also a dialogue among those who have a fondness for kitchen items of all kinds. I hope you'll join us for a few memories, giggles, laughs and some useful information about kitchen collectibles. I am not an expert in any field, but I have been buying and selling kitchen items for over 9 years and loving them for a lifetime. Remember collecting anything should be fun. This is especially true when you can use your collection on a daily basis. Please let me know if there is a particular item you would like featured in upcoming issues.

2. Kitchen History - Foley Manufacturing Company
One of the great Houseware Manufacturing Companies was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you ask most people about the Foley Manufacturing Company, they will either look very perplexed or say, " that's the food mill company, isn't it?" Most people don't realize they grew up using a variety of Foley products.

Foley Manufacturing was founded in 1926 by Walter Ringer, Sr. and yes, their first product was a food mill acquired and licensed from a foreign patent in 1933. This product grew in popularity during the Depression years with a reputation for thrifty food preparation and a timesaver in the canning process. This food mill is still in production today. Two other early products that were very successful was the tri-blade Foley chopper and the Foley blender. Although, most of us today refer to the blender as the Foley Gravy Fork. Both of these are very sought after by collectors but more so by people who want to use them on a daily basis.

During the war years the factory concentrated on producing mess kits and other necessities for the war effort. When postwar production resumed, Foley expanded by acquiring the Meets-A-Need Co. and their Sift-Chine flour sifter and started making sifters under the Foley name.

During the 50s and 60s Foley continued to introduce new products such as handheld juicers, shredders & measuring tools that expanded their kitchenware line. In the 1960s, many of their items were made for them in Japan. In 1984 the Foley Company became part of the Newell Companies and production continued as the Foley-Martens Co. Products are currently manufactured at a plant in Kingsford, Michigan. Because their products were such useful kitchen tools, finding them in mint condition with labeling intact is very difficult.

3. A Recipe From Days Gone By

Recipe for:

GEORGIA CHRISTMAS PUDDING

Soak ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans and ½ cup chopped raisins in ½ cup sherry, Ό cup rum and one teaspoon lemon juice for at least six hours or overnight if possible. Beat the six egg whites stiff, add ½ cup sugar and beat till ropy. Fold in the wine soaked fruits and nuts. Pour into a buttered baking dish. Set in a pan of hot water. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Serve with the following sauce.

Make a custard of six egg yolks, Ό cup sugar and 1 ½ cups of scalded milk. When smoothly thickened, flavor with sherry and serve on the Christmas Pudding.

4. What is it?   Foley Chopper

Kiddie KupThis is a triple blade Foley Chopper. It was produced in the 1940s and 1950s. It works on a spring mechanism and boy, does it ever work. This chopper has become one of the most desired items in today's market. As Christmas approaches it becomes even more desired. Considering their age, they must have been a quality product. You can still find them, although it is getting harder, in reasonably good shape. They originally sold for 79 cents. Book value today is $18-$22.

Do you have an odd piece of kitchenalia that you'd care to share or ask others to help you identify? Just e-mail a picture and your thoughts to mamas@tias.com and we'll post it and any responses here.

5. Collectible of the Month

Choppers -- Making Big Things Small

Choppers have been a greatly underrated kitchen utensil. One of the reasons might be that we don't think about them until we need one. Besides, in a pinch, you can always use a sharp knife. Personally, I find them fascinating because there are so many different kinds, and companies keep re-inventing them. The first one is an Androck double blade chopper with a green wood handle. The green is a recent addition. Originally the handle was plain wood. The market value today is about $12-18. The second is a Corona chopper with a red bakelite handle. This is a favorite of most collectors because there weren't that many choppers made with bakelite handles. It sells for $18-28.00 depending on condition.

The third is a Maid of Honor chopper sold at Sears and it has a value of $18-22. The last was one of my favorites, the Federal Housewares chopper and it sells for $15-20.

6. Mama's Kitchen Stories

Every fall, at my grandmother's house, we would start hearing the plunk, plunk, and more plunk on the roof. The black walnut tree in her yard was shedding its fruit. It was one of my jobs as a young girl to help gather up the walnuts from the yard before the squirrels could get to them. We would pile them in buckets or baskets and haul them to the attic where she would lay them out on old blankets or cloths. As Christmas approached we would haul them down to her kitchen and peel the black coverings off. I hated that part because they always felt so yucky. After we got down to the nut, we'd crack the shells and dig out the nutmeat. After that we'd put them in a big wood bowl or on a cutting board and start chopping with her old wood handled chopper. It seemed like it took hours. When my mama bought one of the new Federal choppers, I was thrilled because it made the chopping part easier. Now we could have bought nuts at the store for our Christmas baking, but we never considered it until the walnut tree finally quit bearing fruit. As my mama would say , "Why buy it when it's there in your backyard." Besides it was a tradition that I still think about every year when I see green walnuts hitting the ground.

Do you have a kitchen memory to share. Please send it to Mama at mamas@tias.com

7. Christmas Kitchen Tips

  • To clean up gravy, spoon it up as fast as you can. Sprinkle artificial sweetener or flour over the stained area to absorb the grease. Put the tablecloth into a sink and soak in a mixture of one teaspoon of a mild, colorless detergent with each cup of lukewarm water for at least 20 minutes. Then wash as usual and let air dry -- don't put in the dryer.
  • Try a theme Christmas tree using your collectibles. I did a Kitchen tree covered in old utensils and aluminum. I added the traditional popcorn and cranberry garlands and made a tree topper out of an advertising pie pan.
  • Cookie Cutters, small aluminum molds and ribbon are inexpensive ornaments.
  • Make a centerpiece using a copper colored or aluminum mold surrounded or filled with Christmas greenery or candles.
  • Old pie pans make great bases for your holiday candles.
  • Dress up your packages by adding small utensils as package ties.
  • Make a gift basket only instead of a basket use a vintage bowl

Have you got a great kitchen tip or question, please send it along to mamas@tias.com
