1. Welcome! Mama's Kitchen is a free newsletter about kitchen collectibles. This newsletter is designed to be entertaining and educational, but also a dialogue among those who have a fondness for kitchen items of all kinds. I hope you'll join us for a few memories, giggles, laughs and some useful information about kitchen collectibles. I am not an expert in any field, but I have been buying and selling kitchen items for over 9 years and loving them for a lifetime. Remember collecting anything should be fun. This is especially true when you can use your collection on a daily basis. Please let me know if there is a particular item you would like featured in upcoming issues.
One of the first and most dramatic applications of this new material was its use in the nose cone of a space missile, the temperature of which must withstand the fierce heat of hundreds of degrees of heat from air friction. A direct spin off of Pyroceram is the unique line of cooking utensils Corning developed from it. They were introduced in 1958 under the name of Corning Ware. This may be surprising because for some reason that name is associated to the late 60s and early 70s for most of us kitchen fanatics.
Cooking utensils made from this gleaming snow white material could withstand use and abuse which no other glass or ceramic (and probably few metal utensils) could withstand without the slightest damage. Half a piece of Corning Ware could be frozen in a block of ice and the other half subjected to the heat of a blow torch without the slightest damage. As a result, the company guaranteed to replace without charge the glass or ceramic part of any Corning Ware product that broke from temperature extremes. The introduction of Corning Ware also marked the company's introduction into the portable appliance field. By the 1970s there was a line consisting of over fifty items ranging from percolators and skillets to roasters and serving platters. It provided a whole new dimension to cooking utensils which, with Corning Ware, could literally go from the freezer to the range and then right on to the table as an attractive serving dish. You can find more information about Corning Ware and kitchen housewares in the book, "The Housewares Story", written by Earl Lifshey, National Housewares Manufacturers Association, 1973.
Pare and chop fine one quart of sweet apples. Pour a pint of boiling water into one quart of granulated white cornmeal. When cool, add sufficient sweet milk, about one pint, to make a very soft batter. Stir in the apples, turn the mixture into a greased shallow pan; bake in a moderate oven (325 degrees) for at least two hours.

4. What is it? The Beat England Style -- Pyrex Beater Jar
This is a beater jar that was made in England by a company with the initials JAJ. They produced products for Pyrex in England. I acquired it from a dealer in England. The JAJ products are very hard to acquire in America. In ten years I've only seen this beater jar once. I don't know if it has a book value but since it is so rare to find in this country, the market value will probably be higher than other comparable jars like the Speed-E-Whipper. Since this one has the original box, the price is around $35.00-$40.00.
Pyrex and Corning Ware Products
The first shown is an Autumn Harvest butter dish with the original box. Starting in the late 1960s and into the 1980s, Corning Ware produced patterns that covered every kitchen need that included bowls, glasses, storage containers, refrigerator sets, condiment sets, and dinnerware. They were very popular. The book value is $12.00-$15.00. With the original box this butter dish markets for $18.00-$22.00. The second is the famous Cookie Jar and Cracker Barrel set in its original packaging. The book value on the canisters alone is $15.00-$18.00. This set has the original packaging and has never been used. The market value on this set is $40.00-$45.00.
The third shown is a Blue Garland salt and pepper shaker set. The book value is $8.00-$12.00 and these sets usually sell for $10.00-$12.00. The last is a juice carafe and it has a book value of $12.00-$18.00. The market value is about $15.00.
6. Mama's Kitchen Stories
I have always loved the fall season better than any other time of the year. It always seems magical to me to watch the trees change color and prepare for winter. As a child I loved everything about it from going back to school to the marathon canning sessions in our kitchen. Every fall I would get very excited because the Sears catalogue would come out and I would get to choose two dresses to buy new. I would sit at the kitchen table looking at those pictures for days before I would make my choice. It also meant I got a new pair of shoes for school. For me, it was better than Christmas.
One day while I was sitting there my older brother walked in with a big box and gave it to my mama. As she opened it, she got a big smile on her face and told me to look at the surprise. It was full of girl's clothes. I squealed with delight and began grabbing everything at once. Being the only girl in our family there weren't a lot of hand me downs that came my way.
My brother had been at a friend's house who had a sister a couple of years older than me. Her mother was getting ready to give the box away and my brother asked if he could have it for me. I had never had so many clothes at one time. I felt like the richest girl in town. My mama called my grandma who arrived in record time and our kitchen quickly became the sewing room. What they couldn't manage to alter was sent out to my great aunt who finished the job. There was one dress in the box that was red and had a big flared skirt with a built in petticoat or what we called a can-can. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I felt so pretty in it and I think I wore it for five days before mama peeled it off of me. I can still remember the excitement in the kitchen that day, not only for me, but for my mama and grandma too. We laughed and giggled the whole afternoon away. It is a treasured moment I still hold close to my heart.

Tired of buying expensive scented candles? Try throwing some orange peels in your fireplace or put them on an oven rack at 350 degrees. Before you know it your house will have a delicious woody smell. The way to get white socks white is to boil them in water to which lemon slices have been added.

If you hate trying to get the lumps out of cake mixes when you beat them, sift the cake mix first in an old sifter.
