  2. Information that is based upon sources which we know to be reliable;

  3. A format that provides a solid and valuable benefit for our subscribers.

2. Questions & Answers

Question: I want to frame my collection of signed photos. What is your advice on how to do this? -- Hillary. W, Kansas.

Answer: Always keep the framed photo away from direct sunlight or artificial climates such as above radiators or heat sources as this will damage the item. As well, mount the autographed photo behind glass or plexiglass. Photos should be kept away from humid and moist areas and be mounted using a dry mount such as cardboard. When you receive the item in a plastic protective folder (like the top loaders we ship photos in), remove the item as you may find that the signature will rub off after time (especially if the signature has been applied to a glossy surface).

Question: How do you determine the price of your autographs? -- Michelle H., Liverpool, UK

Answer: Several factors go into determining the price of an autographed item. The content of the photo (is this person known for his/her role shown in photo) and how difficult it is to obtain the autograph. Condition and market are also factors considered in pricing. Demand also has to be considered, especially if the celebrity has become more popular and the demand has increased suddenly. Examples recently include celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Hilary Duff, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom and Bruce Springsteen. Each has either had a very successful film, tour or CD.

3. Interesting Items   We conducted appraisals on many interesting signed collectibles recently. Here is a sample of a few items we were privileged to examine.
A game used baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig was recently presented for our appraisal. This is a beautiful example of a 1930's era autographed major league (American League) game used baseball. Both autographs were bold, fountain pen signatures. The baseball was in very fine condition and showed some use. The owner explained that the baseball had been recently discovered in a closet by a relative. This item is, by far, the nicest example of Ruth and Gehrig’s signatures we have had the pleasure to examine. http://www.mts.net/~klimacks/set/br.htm
We placed a fair market value of $7,500 on this piece. We are positive that the value could easily be higher if sold in an auction or privately to a collector. The appraisal can be viewed at http://www.whatsitworthtoyou.com under the archive section.
We also received a Charles Dickens signed bank check drawn on a London bank from the account of Charles Dickens, author of "A Christmas Carol", "Great Expectations", "Oliver Twist" & "David Copperfield". Check is in fair condition with several deep folds and tears but does not affect the signature. An embossed 1 penny revenue stamp is affixed. Check was written on November 16, 1860, probably while Dickens resided at Gadshill Place, near Rochester, Kent. Check has been made out to Mrs. A.D. (Dickens?) and endorsed by a Helen Dickens:

We placed a fair market value of $500 on this piece. The appraisal can be viewed at http://www.whatsitworthtoyou.com under the archive section.

5. HOT Film / Music Autographs ... celebrity autographs currently at the top of our buyer's want lists:

Here is list of celebrity autographs that are currently at the top of our buyer’s want lists:

  • Bono / U2 –there has been a steady demand for Bono and U2 group signed items. Bono’s continue activism for peace and the environment have increased his presence and popularity, especially during an election year. It is somewhat difficult to obtain Bono’s signature, though he will accommodate fans on occasion.
  • Jude Law – he has to be one of the most popular actors (with the ladies especially) in Hollywood today. His new movie “Alfie”, the remake of the Michael Caine classic, will no doubt build his credentials and star power. We have had some success obtaining his signature.
  • Howard Stern – this “Shock Jock” extraordinaire has recently announced that he will be performing his radio show on satellite. Love him or hate him, he is still one of the most well known celebrities in the entertainment business. He usually is willing to sign for fans.
  • Rudy Giuliani – granted, he is a political celebrity…but his signature is in big demand. It is almost certain that Rudy will make a run for a national political office in the future. Maybe Rudy vs. Hillary in 2008? He rarely signs in public but will accommodate by appointment and (sometimes) by mail.
