2. Questions & Answers

Question: I truly enjoy the newsletter. I’m a beginner when it comes to autograph collecting. What type of autographs should I purchase? --Cameron W., New York

Answer: Buy autographs that capture your interest. Don’t purchase items presented as “investments” or sold through pressure. Learn as much as possible the language of autograph collecting. The more you study, the easier it will be for you to determine what items are authentic and which items to purchase. Use common sense when buying a signed piece. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Purchase autographed items from reputable dealers, who will help you avoid risks and problems. Most dealers offer a certificate of authenticity, which is only as good as the reputation of the dealer. If the dealer cannot tell you when and where the item was signed or how it was obtained, go elsewhere.

Question: What is the best way to request an autograph, especially in person? John M., Illinois

Answer: I get this question more than any other, so I’ll try to update my answer some. Successfully obtaining a signature in person really depends on the mood of the celebrity. They are people just like you and me and don’t feel like being bothered sometimes. We try to be as cordial as possible. When you act rudely towards the celebrity, you usually will not get the autograph. I go back to a classic story Julia Roberts told about an experience she had. A fan followed her into the ladies room on one occasion. While sitting in the stall, this fan passed a few sheets of toilet paper and a pen under the divider and asked for a “few autographs since she wasn’t busy.” Ms. Roberts courteously responded that she was busy and apologized. That story is an extreme case, but I have seen many autograph seekers make complete idiots out of themselves in order to acquire a signature.

When the situation is right, politely offer the item to be signed and hope for the best. Usually, if the celebrity or someone in their entourage recognizes your politeness and proper demeanor there is rarely a problem. It’s always a pleasure to gain the confidence of the celebrity and possibly be able to carry on a short conversation. I normally will give my references to the business manager if available, when I had a good experience with their client. It does help in a future encounter.

3. Interesting Items   We conducted appraisals on many interesting signed collectibles recently. Here is a sample of a few items we were privileged to examine.
We conducted appraisals on many interesting signed collectibles recently. Here is a sample of a few items we were privileged to examine.

An 8x10 photo signed by the Apollo XI crew was recently presented for our appraisal.  The 3 astronauts from this historic first moon landing mission Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins each signed the photo.  The owner was a former U.S. Marine at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada from 1969-1971. The Apollo XI crew was in Ottawa on a world tour and gave several Marines and the Ambassador a personally autographed photo.

This is a superb & collectible piece and quite rare.

We placed a fair market value of $2,200 on this piece.  We are positive that the value could easily be much higher if sold in an auction or privately to a collector.  The appraisal can be viewed at http://www.whatsitworthtoyou.com  under the archive section.

We also received a signed typed letter by President-elect John F. Kennedy.  It was dated December 1, 1960 on U.S. Senate stationary and sent to James F. Cleary, Democratic Party and political ally who later served as Mayor of North Adams, Mass. from 1968-69.  The letter and signature were in outstanding condition.

5. HOT Film / Music Autographs ... celebrity autographs currently at the top of our buyer's want lists:

  • Lindsay Lohan – This young lady is super hot! She appeared in over 60 commercials before she landed the role in “The Parent Trap”. Her acting and singing performance with Jamie Lee Curtis in “Freaky Friday” has catapulted her career. It is somewhat difficult to obtain Lohan’s signature, though she will accommodate fans on occasion.
  • Scarlett Johansson – her performances in “Lost In Translation” and “Girl With A Pearl Earring” as well as 2 Golden Globe nominations have placed her among the Hollywood acting elite … and she is only 20 years old! She is very personable in public and we have had some success obtaining her signature.
  • Christina Milian – the beautiful Cuban-American actress/singer first started as a junior journalist for The Walt Disney Company. Her music is currently high on the European charts, but she will be gaining attention in the US very soon. She will be displaying her talents co-starring with John Travolta and Uma Thurman in “Be Cool”. She usually is willing to sign for fans.
