Vintage Menu Nicola's Italian Restaurant South Bend
This is a very vintage unused menu from Nicola's Italian Restaurant in South Bend, Indiana. It measures 11.75 x 8.75 and looks unused. Gorgeous colors depicting a gondola, and signed bo Rocco L. When it's opened there isn't any color loss at the crease so it appears almost unused. There are some white spots scattered through but these are ink skips from the printer and not damage. There are some smudges on the back, but looks like it about the same color as the front, so probably from being stacked. Also, some faint fingerprints. It is undated, but from the pricing, it's quite old. I researched this restaurant and couldn't find it. However, current maps indicate that there is a hospital at that address now. Some examples of pricing: $1.50 for a chicken dinner with fries, salad, bread, butter and coffee; shrimp dinner with same for $1.75. Pepsi is .15, as is 7Up. Pizza with sausage is 2.25 for a 14 inch, and is called Nicola's Cracker Crust Pizza . This is the best one: Filet Mignon, wrapped in bacon, with fries, salad, bread, butter and coffee a whopping $2.50!!!
This is a glossy red with gold lettering menu that measures approximately 13 by 8.5. There are some dents to the glossy surface from use, the edges are slightly worn, and there is a water spot to the top, left of the front page. I believe this is from about 1959. I did a search and found an Notre Dame collect newsletter from 1959 that contained an ad for this restaurant. It could be later into the 60s because it is undated. Pricing includes .35 for an egg roll, 2.65 for Lobster Tail Cantonese and 1.95 for a fried perch dinner with soup, relishes, salad, potato, rolls, desert and beverage - maybe it's even earlier than the 50s given those prices! This isn't perfect and has obviously been used, but staples still intact in the center.

Restaurant Name: Hotel Hanford Location: Mason City, Iowa. About the Hotel Hanford: Our research indicates the hotel was the scene of many a party and fancy gathering in the days of 'The Music Man' premiere. Perhaps never was this more true than at the post-premiere Champagne Supper in the hotel's Wedgewood Room at midnight Tuesday, June 19, 1962. The movie premiere was at 9:45 p.m. at the Palace Theatre. Guests invited to the supper afterward didn't get around to eating until about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Hosted by Technicolor Corp., the dinner featured colored tablecloths in red, blue, orange, green and purple. The menu included Lobster Newburg and Chicken a la King a la Sherry. Mason City native Meredith Willson, composer of 'The Music Man,' delighted everyone when he sat down at the piano to play and sing music from his hit show. Most of the celebrities, who also included Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Ronny Howard, Morton da Costa, Arthur Godfrey and Hedda Hopper, stayed at the Hotel Hanford. They arrived in Mason City Monday, June 18. Many Mason Cityans back then spent a lot of time at the Hanford. There were company parties, service club meetings and breakfasts or lunches at the Belt 'N Buckle restaurant, formerly the Plantation Room. As late as 1968, women dining in the Belt 'N Buckle were asked to wear hats and gloves. Many a gentleman had his hair cut at the hotel barbershop in those days. Among the famous guests who stayed at the Hotel Hanford over the years were former President Herbert Hoover and jazz composer and band leader Duke Ellington. The hotel was purchased in 1969 by Good Shepherd Health Center and is now The Manor apartments for senior residents. Date stated: Sunday July 4, 1955 Artwork: Hotel Hanford name on front. In 1732 the first edition of Poor Richard's Almanac was published. The Almanac was a yearly book filled with varied facts and figures. Benjamin Franklin wrote tons of mottoes, sayings and homespun truths, some of these were taken from Benjamin's wide experience of reading. One of the many saying (this was known as a proverb) was: Early to Bed, Early to rise, Always makes a man healthy, Wealthy and Wise. This almanac was a huge best seller, most years Poor Richard's Almanac sold 10,000 copies!! (Can you believe that?) This was a best seller in the colonies!! This man named Benjamin Franklin was thought of as the worlds smartest man! The writing is an early American language not used today. This must be handled with great care, because it is brittle.

Small Lithograph Cards Of 3 Men In Caricature Costume
These came in a large collection of postcards I bought up. They measure 4-1/8 by 2-9/16 inch. Two of them are initialed by the artist, AM. They look like the type of thing you'd see at a fair where a person stands before a costume with their head appearing through a cut out. The men are definitely real people as you can see from the one with bad teeth. I think they may be lithographs of ink drawings. Probably Turn of the Century. Condition: Very good to Fair; The one with the bad teeth has a crease at the back.

Rather comical postcard by the Frederick A. Stokes Company, copyright 1907. The photo of a couple huddled over pen and paper is painted by Larence F. Underwood. Overall a darling card postmarked 1909. Condition: Good, soft corners. As with another Valentine postcard I have listed, I didn't notice the white spots until seeing the photo posted. It too appears to be paint spots and came right off with my nail.
So typical of the Art Nouveau era, here is a lovely embossed Valentine's Greeting postcard. Covered with hearts, a water lily, and other Art Nouveau motif. Schmucker card, marked made in Germany.
