With contributions from 20 collectors and scholars, the collections in this book range from 1840-1940, including camera obscuras and cyanotypes to autochromes, stereoscopes, daguerreotypes. Also included are American tintypes and ambrotypes, the miniature and intricate stanhopes, magic lanterns and other optical toys, megalethoscopes, and zoetropes, and many more. Each collector has written a meticulous study to introduce their photographic passion, and with over 500 images (most never before published) of cameras and photographs alike, the truly marvelous nature of the camera and the miraculous technologies that enabled them are revealed. The transcendence and ?wonder of wonders!? that is ever present within photography can still be honestly and freshly felt today. Victorian Era Photo And Frame / African American Baby
This is a Victorian era frame and photograph of an African American baby girl. I purchased this frame here in Huntsville, from an estate. The lady was a life-long resident of Huntsville. She passed away about 10 years ago, at age 97. The frame is approx. 22.5 inches tall X 17 inches wide. It is a chalk frame. There are some minor scratches on the frame. I tried to take photos so that you can get a good look at it. The glass is one of the oval convex frames. If you have any questions, please e-mail. Thanks. Lurleen

Over-painted Photo Of Young Girl, Portrait Miniature.
Miniature portrait of a young girl - painted on card, actually an overpainted photo, but it's difficult to tell. On the rear of the card is what appears to be a workshop sheet, where the client details the sitter's complexion, hair colouring etc - colouring by rote, Victorian style. (This may be just a bit of card which was used to mount the portrait, and nothing to do with it). The name given as the sitter (or possibly the person who ordered this item) is Mrs Johns, Belfast. The complexion is listed as fair, the eyes as dark grey, the hair as dark brown. Finished in colors . Time of delivery to be June, and a note to make hair smoother. Total item measures 7.5 cm by 6.5 cm, not including the hanging bale (3 inches by 2.1/2 inches). The frame is possibly brass, with glass covering the portrait. Very good condition.

Additionally, it has a rounded light grey rectangle Wavemagnet with a small brass Zenith crest above incised white lettering and yellow vertical stripes. CONDITION: has been lightly cleaned; no evidence of rust or corrosion inside or out; minimal cosmetic wear to knobs, which makes it appear that this radio received moderate to low use; clear dial cover with no cracks or blemishes and clear text; knobs and dial work; comes with an extra minature tube in the gang clip; no manual; I've plugged this radio in and it appears that it is not working but I am not a radio expert. Leather Cased Victorian Photo On Porcelain Or Glass.

The other side of the folder is blank, so room for a photo there. Gold-tooled leather. Wear and an old repair to the spine of the opening leaf. The Last Muster: Images Of The Revolutionary War Generation By: Maureen Taylor
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. A remarkable work of documentary history, The Last Muster is a collection of rare nineteenth-century photographic images--primarily daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and carte des visite paper photographs--of the Revolutionary War generation. This extraordinary collection of images assigns faces to an un-illustrated war and tells the stories of our nation's founding fathers and mothers; updating and supplementing research last collected and published over a century ago. In her comprehensive introduction, author Maureen Taylor explains how she came to this project and collected the images. She also describes her exhaustive primary source research involved in dating and identifying each image and investigating the story and genealogy of each subject. The array of seventy images is expansive and includes veterans, loyalists, Native Americans, African Americans, children who witnessed battles and and soldiers, and women who nursed the wounded and even took up arms themselves. Although the faces that gaze at the reader are old and wizened, the stories they tell are of youthful bravery in the young days of the republic. The Last Muster is a much-needed contribution to the history of the American Revolution, the early Republic, and the history of Photography. Through these portraits and the accompanying narrative, readers will have the opportunity to relive the Revolutionary War.

Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. One of the most intriguing and little studied forms of nineteenth-century photography is the tintype. Introduced in 1856 as a low-cost alternative to the daguerreotype and the albumen print, the tintype was widely marketed from the 1860s through the first decades of the twentieth century as the most popular photographic medium. The picture-making preference of the people, it was almost never used for celebrity portraiture: It was affordable, portable, unique and available almost everywhere. Because of its ubiquity, the tintype provides a startlingly candid record of the political upheavals that rocked the four decades following the American Civil War-and the personal anxieties they induced. As this book's author, Steven Kasher, argues, the tintype studio became a kind of performance space in which sitters could act out their personal identities. Sitters brought to the tintype studio not just their family and friends but also the tools of their trade, costumes, toys, stuffed animals and other such props. Often they would enact stereotypes and fantasies that reflected or challenged conventional gender, race and class roles. Surprisingly, the tintype was almost exclusively an American phenomenon, rarely used in other countries, and this book demonstrates how this modest form of photography provides extraordinary insight into the development of national attitudes and characteristics in the formative years of the early Modern era. Featured in this book are more than 200 remarkable examples of tintypes, mostly drawn from the Permanent Collection of the International Center of Photography in New York.

Rather dark ambrotype photo in case. The subject is a small girl. It appears the photo has been remounted and is very clean, although dark. The case is in immaculate condition. Case measures 74 mm by 61 mm and 19 mm thick (2.7/8 inches by 2.3/8 inches and 3/4 inch thick).
Yes, I would rate the fob and all the hardware as excellent antique condition. Can't say the same for the black silk that holds it - that is worn and frayed on the crossbar that hangs below the swivel. The sturdy swivel is marked on the inside as B.F.S.& Co. The fob would make a wonderful pendant if you can't replace the silk.
A locket fob! Turned cornerwise, this one is 5/8 inch square with a teeny, tiny diamond in the center. Wouldn't this look great on a neck chain? Ibe image shows it open and another shows a shadow in the goldfill - but it is on the back only.

A set of 12 Magic Lantern slides, each 9.5 x3 . Each slide projects a mini-story, in 4 sections as it is guided through the Magic Lantern projector. There are forest scenes of animals, children playing, soldiers, folk outside a tavern, exotic travelers with camels in the desert. A wonderful variety of what would captivate a 19th century audience. The 12 slides are contained in a wood frame which had a cracked glass which has been removed. I have cleaned the outer surface of these slides, but some dust is on the surface of the paintings. No damage to the paintings. All paint is intact. This would make a wonderful package combined with my rminst36 listing of a Magic Lantern of the same era. The slides fit that projector. Slides could be removed from frame and shipped without the frame to reduce shipping costs. Contact me with questions and preference.
A magic lantern or slide projector made ca 1890. This one may have been converted from a burner type to electric. It now holds an electric light bulb. Fixture need new wiring. There is a tall brass chimney to release heat. Glass slides were hand fed through the slot to produce a picture on a wall. This was used before photographic slides were perfected. The slides were likely glass with hand painted scenes. All black painted tin with gold trim. Has a brass medallion that say: Gesetzlich Geschutzt or LEGALLY PROTECTED IN GERMAN. The equivalent of Patented. Also the medallion contains the number 720. Please see my listing rmar17 of a compatible set of hand painted glass slides from the same estate.
