Vintage Bowl, Covina Pottery #936. This lovely brown bowl measures 7 1/2 by 6 1/2 across and 2 5/8 in height. Covina Pottery was in business from 1943 to the late 1980's in Covina California, which is nestled in the eastern part of the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. It is now in great demand because of its simple elegant designs that yielded a wide array of beautifully glazed pieces. Unfortunately the company could no longer afford to operate their kilns due to their huge power consumption in the town of Covina. The utility tax was so high it hurt many local residents and businesses and caused the closure of the Covina Pottery in the late 1980's. This action ultimately triggered a recall of the entire City Council. In any case, the pottery company was gone. This bowl has a little under-the-glaze flek and a pin prick on one edge. It is otherwise in very nice vintage condition with the Covina Pottery #936 mark.
Boot Planter/Vase, Martha Vogensen, circa 1955. This unusual vintage boot planter is 5 3/4 tall and 6 long. It is decorated in a scratchy tan color with a darker brown trim and black showlaces. There is a ladder up the heel headed into a window. There are two little boys and two girls crawling up and resting upon the boot (one of the boys is resting on the toe). It is in very good condition--no chips or cracks, with some crazing on the inside. The piece is signed by Martha Vogensen and marked 1955 on the bottom.
