Antique flow blue earthenware plate. This gorgeous plate has markings on the back but I do not know who the maker is. It is marked: -1- and if looking one way it looks like a number 53, turned other way and it could initials E ?. The reddish flowers and blue leaves are hand painted under glaze; the larger green leaves appear to be transferware. This plate is 10.75 wide. It has some flaws as expected for earthenware, (crazing, crevices, slight discoloration, and minor scratching). Overall, it displays very nicely. The floral arrangement in the urn design looks somewhat oriental. I think this is a rare early piece since it is earthenware, not porcelain and has some hand painting. Most of the flow blue pieces I see are porcelain with transferware and are from the latter Victorian period. 6/13smc
This is a large bowl. It is not an antique bowl. It was purchased on an antique washstand that I needed but I did not need this bowl. This is a newer bowl, (but not brand new), likely made someplace in Europe. It reads: Flo-Blue England 1886. It feels like ironstone and pings like ironstone. It is heavy and has no chips or cracks. I think it would make a great sink if you drill a hole in the center of it. It is 5 inches tall x 16 wide.
Very nice vintage flow blue cow milk pitcher. This item is probably not from the 1800's, but is a vintage item. Age est: 1900-1930's; likely from the Staffordshire region. I compared it with the antique ones and the newer faux ones. It is neither. It does have a dark, worn smooth bottom rim indicating age; no chips or cracks. There is crazing on interior bottom and exterior bottom. It is not porcelain and feels like stoneware or ironstone. Unlike the new ones, this one has a blue cow, tree and grass, and a bottom rim, and no mark. The new ones are dated, are 6.5 tall, have a white cow with flat dry bottoms, have no grass, nor are they as detailed. This pitcher is fairly detailed and the pattern is repeated on opposite side. It is 6.75 tall x 7.5 wide from handle end to spout or 5.25 wide from rim to rim. It is a very nice vintage piece for your flow blue or pitcher collection. 9/12

Antique flow blue fish platter. This is a long, heavy, earthenware platter. c:1800's. It is not marked. It is 8.75 wide x 21 inches long. Later flow blue is usually porcelain with transferware design, this one is earthenware and the fish appears to be hand painted under the glaze. No chips or cracks. It does have crazing, and some discloloration mainly on the back. There are some straw lines on the fish; these are under the glaze. Raised scrolly borders with gold design. It is a magnificent large platter; the pics do not do it justice. It has stilt marks on the back; and 2 tiny pindots on front, (likely glaze bubble pops). Great to display in a Victorian or French style room or hung on a wall in a hunting lodge or bed & breakfast! A small game plate on e-bay is currently listed for over $800! 11/11aaestcs

Early vintage English Delft Flow Blue small plate, 7 3/8 in.diameter. Abstract dotted design, handpainted instead of transferware. Glaze has typical bluish tint for flow blue pieces. Impressed mark 4D5 with something else underneath but I can't decipher it and I couldn't find a reference other than the type of mark is late 1700's-early 1800's. Condition-has 1 edge chip above and 1 underneath, glaze is very thin so there is alot of wear, especially on the edge and inner rim. There is a small red spot on top of the glaze, probably a paint spot. This is an example of what is known as English Delft, rarely marked, and the glaze was easily damaged. This was in general use until the glazing technology was improved in the 1800's. An unusual piece of history despite condition! If you do not like the vintage look of this old platter, you can, according to the book on Decorative American Pottery by J. Wilby, 2004 edit., soak it out by using 90% hydrogen peroxide, (available from a pharmacist); soak in the peroxide for a few days, but do not ever use bleach! Personally, I do not mind the aged look, since that means you can actually use it instead of just displaying it! The 11/7/05 Auction Exchange paper had an article on Flow Blue; the French China Co. is listed as being one of a limited number of American potters that produced Flow Blue in America.
