Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks provides the quickest, easiest way to identify more than 3,500 American, European, and Oriental marks. The perfect companion to Kovels' original best seller, The Dictionary of Marks - Pottery and Porcelain (still in print after more than 30 years, Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks is the most comprehensive reference for nineteenth and twentieth-century marks. (The original dictionary remains the definitive authority on seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century marks.) Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks is arranged according to symbol (anchor, birds, crown) and alphabetically according to name (Delft, Sevres). The new easy-to-read format makes identification a breeze: If the symbol on the piece Is a shield, turn to the shield section and leaf through until you've found your mark; if the mark is a name, simply check it in the alphabetical section. Each mark is illustrated and accompanied with all relevant information: factory, city and country of origin; material used; color of mark; date mark was used; and name of current company (which may have changed since the piece was made). The book provides supplementary sections on dating systems used by important factories, the vocabulary of marks, fakes and forgeries, pottery and porcelain family trees, and a cross-referenced index. Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks is the standard reference book for identifying nineteenth- and twentieth-century porcelain and pottery.

Christopher Dresser Ault Pottery 3 Piece Garniture.
Arts and Crafts three piece garniture, by Christopher Dresser - Ault Pottery. Two large, tall side vases and a central large squat vase, all hand decorated with stylised acanthus scroll designs. Underneath the central vase is the impressed mark with Dresser's signature and the Ault Pottery mark. Also the letters 146 (I think that's correct). This set has been illustrated in books on Dresser. A rare set. Dates to very early 20th century. Condition: One of the tall vases has a restored neck - this is an old restoration and has discoloured a bit with age. The actual work is excellent, but the colour of the mottled dusky dark mauve/brown shade of the vase has faded to a slightly mustard tinge (see photos). The other vase is excellent and unrestored. The central squat vase is all original also. It has a small shallow surface chip where there is a stress line at the point where the handles have been attached to the neck of the vase (top - see photo 4).
