Our Lady of Banneux From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search A series of articles on Roman Catholic Mariology Raphael - Madonna dell Granduca.jpg General articles Overview of Mariology Veneration of the Blessed Virgin History of Mariology Key Marian apparitions (approved or worthy of belief) Guadalupe Miraculous Medal La Salette Lourdes Pontmain Laus Banneux Beauraing Fátima Akita Expressions of devotion Art Music Architecture Specific articles Apparitions Saints Popes Dogmas and Doctrines Movements & Societies In the 1930s, Mariette Beco, an adolescent girl living in Banneux, province of Liège (Belgium), reported eight visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary between January 15th and March 2nd 1933. She reported seeing a Lady in white who declared herself to be the 'Virgin of the Poor' and told her: believe in me and I will believe in you. In one of such visions, the Lady reportedly asked Mariette to drink from a small spring and later said that the spring was for healing. Over time the site drew pilgrims. Today, the small spring yields about 2,000 gallons of water a day with many reports of miraculous healings.[1] Her claims were subject to an official investigation from 1935 to 1937 by an episcopal commission. The evidence collected was submitted to Rome for further analysis. In May 1942 Bishop Kerkhofs of Liège (Belgium) gave a first recogniton of the authenticity of the facts.. Then, in 1947, approval for the apparitions came from the Holy See. It was declared definite in 1949.[2] After the apparitions, Beco decided to remain a private person, married and had a quiet family life. A small chapel stands where the Virgin of the Poor requested it to be built.

Antique S Benoit Benedict Double Sided Religious Pendant Charm
A tad over 1/2 diameter, octagonal shape, unmarked, double sided, Victorian Edwardian era, appears silver over brass, old, unpolished, sold as found. Origin of the Medal of Saint Benedict For the early Christians, the cross was a favorite symbol and badge of their faith in Christ. From the writings of St. Gregory the Great (540-604), we know that St. Benedict had a deep faith in the Cross and worked miracles with the sign of the cross. This faith in, and special devotion to, the Cross was passed on to succeeding generations of Benedictines. Devotion to the Cross of Christ also gave rise to the striking of medals that bore the image of St. Benedict holding a cross aloft in his right hand and his Rule for Monasteries in the other hand. Thus, the Cross has always been closely associated with the Medal of St. Benedict, which is often referred to as the Medal-Cross of St. Benedict. Ms. illus. In the course of time, other additions were made, such as the Latin petition on the margin of the medal, asking that by St. Benedict's presence we may be strengthened in the hour of death, as will be explained later. We do not know just when the first medal of St. Benedict was struck. At some point in history a series of capital letters was placed around the large figure of the cross on the reverse side of the medal. For a long time the meaning of these letters was unknown, but in 1647 a manuscript dating back to 1415 was found at the Abbey of Metten in Bavaria, giving an explanation of the letters. They are the initial letters of a Latin prayer of exorcism against Satan, as will be explained below.
