Dictionary Of Portrait Painters In Britain Up To 1920
Product Description To appreciate the phenomenon one only has to attend a standard auction sale of British paintings where as many as a third of the items are portraits. Moreover there are galleries devoted exclusively to portraiture in London, Edinburgh and Dublin - an indication of an enthusiasm for the subject unmatched anywhere else in the world. This seemingly unquenchable thirst for portraits of individuals, families and friends has meant that for over four hundred years, native-born portrait artists have been joined by their foreign-born colleagues, attracted to these isles by the vast number of commissions available. Yet, ironically, most general art historical dictionaries give scant coverage to the many men and women who specialised in what is arguably the most difficult of all subject matter to paint. Attention has been focused on court painters and a favoured few, rarely if ever on the full spectrum of the profession with its wealth of talent. This dictionary redresses the balance. Camille Faure: Limoges Art Deco Enamels By Alberto Shayo
Provides an account of the art of enameling in Limoges, France. This almost dormant art form was taken to new and daring levels of design and execution during the Art Deco period (1920-30). Its most important and prolific studio was that of Camille Faur,. From painting street signs and billboards, Faur, moved on to enamels of the highest quality, mostly of vases. An avid clientele not only in France, but as far as Japan and Brazil welcomed his geometric and flowerform designs, with vibrant and shining colours. The studio continued to function until 1985, mostly as a family venture under different modes. Faur,'s personal life, art and studio are discussed, as well as illustrations of over 200 vases and other objects taken from museums and never-before-seen private collections worldwide.

This stunning book is the long-awaited result of an extensive review of New York painters and their widely diverse works. It presents an overview of styles, mediums, subjects, even philosophies of art found in galleries, museums, and artists' studios of present-day New York, the oft-acknowledged Art Capital of the contemporary world. Although you may recognize the names and works of many, this company of 100 painters also features works by artists less celebrated, though no less deserving of attention. Expect to find recent works, as well as paintings from an earlier period of an artist's oeuvre -- as near as Kelynn Alder's Coney Island, painted specifically for this book, and as distant as George Tooker's iconic allegory, Subway, painted in 1950. Brief biographical sketches accompany each artist's work, providing insight into their emotional and philosophical connection with art as well as their schooling and accomplishments. Experience for yourself this visual feast showcasing the unique works of 100 gifted New York painters. This book is a must-have addition for the library of any art connoisseur and/or collector. Antique Collectors Club, England, 2004. Hard Cover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Mint. 4to - over 9¾ - 12 tall. This book tells the full story of the Kashmir shawl, how it migrated to Europe in the 1800s and how the key pattern of the boteh evolved. With its beginnings under the Mughal emperors in Kashmir, the industry continued under Afghan rule, with an explosion of new designs during the Sikh period, until it fell into decline under the rule of the Dogra Rajahs. Frank Ames, a textile dealer himself, stresses the importance of the French connection in the nineteenth century and the cross-fertilisation of ideas engendered by the strong demands of European fashion whose love of the Oriental produced the rival Jacquard shawl. Changing fashions at the end of that century saw the demise of the shawl. The shawls are classified by stylistic period and an illustrated guide is included in the book to show the chronological development of designs. This will help the collector to date shawls more accurately as the boteh changes from a recognisable flower blossom to an abstract symbol. Reference Book. Bookseller Inventory # 10749

The Heritage Of English Knives By David Hayden-wright
Book Description This is the preeminent reference on antique English knives, written by one of Great Britain's most respected 20th century authorities on weaponry. The text contains much previously unknown historical information about cutlers and their art. Chapters and over 300 color photographs and hand-drawn illustrations cover the earliest history of Sheffield, England, a directory of 19th century cutlers' names, and many groups and types of knives, from the most humble penknife to magnificent exhibition pieces. The history of the famous American designed Bowie knife, manufactured extensively in Sheffield, is explained and amply illustrated. Discussions present multi-bladed sportsmen's pocket knives, farrier's, smoker's, quill knives, curiosities, and actual knives presented to King George IV in 1821. These appear along with a veritable kaliedoscope of craftsmanship. Quoting from the author's Acknowledgements, Sheffield's legacy is not just in the tangible dust-covered records or faded photographs rescued from destruction, but in the living art form of their craft that endures and remains the symbol of what was the centre of the cutlery world for well over a hundred years. For one thing, there is the perfection of handiwork in making clean-shooting guns, but also the spirit that emanates from these weapons. The double-barreled gun is part of hunting, and when you hold an old English gun in your hand, your mind's eye almost automatically conjures up visions of elephants, buffalos, or lions, great antelopes in the African scrub or rain forest, even if you are just hunting deer or wild boar back home. With the detailed engraving, beautiful grain, checkered stocks, and high finishes of many double-barreled guns, they are ideal for your hunting or dreaming. This book presents the double-barrelled gun in 272 beautiful photos and clear informative text that will captivate a hunter's attention and inspire the sport. Egyptian Revival Jewelry & Design Book - New By Dale Reeves Nicholls Etal
Book Description Jewelry and decorative manufactured goods in Egyptian Revival style capitalized on public fascination resulting from the rediscovery of Egyptian monuments and artifacts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Museum exhibitions, movies, and political events popularized Egyptian architectural designs throughout the world. This is the first book of its kind to focus on revival consumer goods inspired by the ancient culture, including jewelry. Over 400 color photographs and line drawings depict beautiful examples with symbols and images of Egyptian design. Bold colors of natural pigments created the pallets that modern manufacturers used. Images of sylized insects, hieroglyphics, sphinx, royal symbols, and geometric patterns are explored. The manufacturers are introduced with pertinent information that collectors will reference. A chronology of Egyptian history identifies the kingdoms and their relevant styles. This should be an important reference for designers, historians, and ornamental collectors alike. The values with the captions reflect the market today, and the glossary and index are useful for all.

Over 250 color photographs display details of contemporary iron objects, including flowers, grape clusters, leaves, small and large animals that attest to the blacksmith's role as a sculptor. There are amazing scrolls, folds, twists, textures, and weaves not normally associated with the hard material. With heat, hammer, talent, and muscle, the modern artist-blacksmith is forging exciting forms that permeate our surroundings. The casual viewer may often overlook details of small elements used to create a magnificent whole. Dona Z. Meilach shows how focusing on the iron details of flowers, leaves, and amazing critters makes ordinary fences, gates, and chandeliers extraordinary. Functional joints become beautiful elements for furniture, fireplace accessories, candlestick holders, and other iron items we use daily. Dona's approach will open one's eyes to see and respect this burgeoning art form. This stimulating book is a must for metalworkers, designers, artists, gallery owners, art lovers, and museum directors. Palladio's Architecture And Its Influence: A Photographic Guide
This book includes a brief biography on Andrea Palladio with insight on his _The Four Books of Architecture. It also mentions the introduction that many Americans have to Palladian architecture-Thomas Jefferson. The scope of his influence on Jefferson is evident simply by looking at Monticello and the University of Virginia. The authors divide Palladio's works into three categories: villas, palaces and churches. They also include Palladian designs in England, Scotland and America. Each design is profiled with pictures and given roughly 2 - 4 paragraphs of description. The information provided is easy to read but not so simplistic that it seems superficial. The photographs are excellent and often show fascinating detail. Unfortunately though, all photos are b/w and sometimes color would have been helpful. That reason and the basic nature of the text caused me to rate this at four stars rather than five. Experts and scholars should look elsewhere unless they are only after the illustrations. For students and casual observers, this book is a fantastic way to begin learning about Palladio.
Painted Ladies, the authors' 1978 homage to San Francisco's multicolored Victorian houses, inspired many homeowners elsewhere to forsake traditional gray or white housepaint in favor of a more colorful pallette. In this sequel, Pomada and Larsen show examples of Victorian houses across America, the criterion of inclusion being the use of at least three contrasting shades of paint (some use more than 30). As the authors rightly point out, no two of the houses are exactly alike. They range from tastfully exuberant (the Octagon House in Irvington, N.Y.) to sedately tonal (a Queen Anne-style house in Salem, Ind.) to just plain garish. Pomada and Larsen laud such creative touches as signing one's house as a work of art and are particularly fond of interpretations of 19th century colors. Still, the text is loaded with information and gives helpful tips about embarking on the daunting job of creating a Painted Lady.
Painted Ladies: San Francisco's Resplendent Victorians
In this, her first book about the modernizing-by-paint of 19th-Century houses, she concentrates on San Francisco, where the Painted Lady style was invented during the heyday of the hippies. The houses shown in the gorgeous full-color photographs range from the elegantly somber (like Don Parodi's many-bayed house on p. 23) to the minutely detailed (the imposing Colonial Revival mansion on p. 20 and the Bert Franklin rowhouse opposite) to the downright gaudy (Rhine & Kennedy's fire-engine-red offices on p. 29, a tiny lavender cottage on p. 50, a literally rainbow-striped confection on p. 69). If you can't make it to San Francisco in person--or if you've been, and want to relive the glories of its vintage housing--this book belongs on your shelf.

First Editions: A Guide To Identification - 4th Edition By Edward Zempel
Book collectors seek first editions, but many publishers provide little assistance in this quest. Even when they do designate edition and/or printing, they do not all use the same system. Thus, Harper Harcourt Brace Jovanovich adds letters. Some publishers denote edition or printing on the copyright page with the last number on the right, others with the first number on the left; still others note only second and later editions. Hence, this book is indispensable to collectors and libraries serving them. Zempel and Verkler have collected statements from some 1700 20th-century publishers of English-language books--about 700 more than in their 1984 edition--indicating current practices and earlier methods as far back as 1928. The guide also helps track down acquisitions and publishers' name changes. A worthy additions to most collections.

The term cyberspace was coined by William Gibson in his science fiction novel Neuromancer in the early 1980s. However, the architectural possibilities of this area of design were being investigated well before the term was popularized, and with good reason: cyberspace is a habitat for the imagination, a medium that facilitates a unique creative freedom. Images' Cyberspace publication presents an exciting collaboration of essays and colorful projects which demonstrate the increased potential of cyberspace. The contributors have been selected in a manner that represents some of the most amazing work that is being produced, redefining the nature of what architecture could develop to be in the future. For travelers who have visited the beautiful exotic destination of Thailand and have viewed Thai dancers or purchased a miniature doll or mask, this book will put a story on your new souvenir that will even make historians envious. For the art history student specializing in Southeast Asian Art, this book will make you want to visit Thailand even more. It may even make a mask collector out of you. Excellent book on without a doubt a rare topic for the West. The elaborately fashioned and gilded masks worn by dancers performing in the popular Ramayana dance drama are one of the enduring symbols of Thai culture. Since their introduction at the beginning of the Rattanakosin period in the late 18th century, many hundreds of thousands of masks have been produced by skilled craftsmen. Less well-known as an art form, the history of Thai puppetry dates back to as early as the 11th century, with mention being made in stone inscriptions regarding their role as an offering to the gods. During the reign of King Narai of Ayutthaya in the 17th century, large, metre-high puppets known as Hun Luang were used to relate popular folk tales for the enjoyment of the court and the general public. However, the greatest evidence for the popularity of Thai puppets comes from the Bangkok period (1782 to the present), when a puppet performance would form part of many ceremonies from funerals to Buddhist holy days. Today, practitioners of these art forms are becoming scarce and the finely crafted puppets are hard to find. This book unites for the first time puppets and masks from some of the finest collections, and will help make a unique facet of Thai culture more widely known. Natthapatra Chandavij is a leading expert on Thai art and culture. She has an MA in Historical Archaeology from Silpakorn University. She is Senior Curator in the Fine Arts Department and has published widely on many aspects of Thai Art.

Robert Winter is one of the country's leading architectural historians and an expert on the Arts and Crafts movement. A noted author and lecturer, he is the Arthur G. Coons Professor of the History of Ideas, Emeritus, at Occidental College, Los Angeles. He lives in Pasadena. Alexander Vertikoff, chief photographer for American Bungalow magazine, has photographed Arts and Crafts buildings for such books as American Bungalow Style (also by Robert Winter), Bungalow Nation, and Stickley Style. He lives outside Albuquerque, New Mexico. Book Description Inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement, Craftsman-style homes captured America's heart at the turn of the 20th century. Bungalows and larger houses with broad roof overhangs, comfortable porches, and hand-hewn wooden details grew out of California's warm climate and influenced a range of other building types, from resort hotels to churches and schools. Today Craftsman-style structures can be found as far east as New York State. Intricate woodwork gives them a timeless handcrafted look, and rustic materials tie them to the earth. Behind each element lies a hint of a craftsman plying his art. This handsome volume is a celebration of Craftsman-style architecture, which flourished in America from about 1895 into the 1920s. It took on a more natural and rustic form on this side of the Atlantic than its British counterpart, in keeping with the rugged American frontier ethos. Robert Winter, one of the country's leading authorities on the Arts and Crafts movement, has supplied the informative text, which complements the gorgeous color photography by Alexander Vertikoff.

We Are The People presents over 1000 postcards of ordinary people made exceptional by the lens of the camera. These images, all real photographs in postcard form, have been selected from the extensive collection of the artist, Tom Phillips, a postcard addict for a quarter of a century. Photographic equipment was cheaper, film faster, studios sprang up in every town, on every seaside promenade. In this democratic new medium, cook and chatelaine, poacher and gamekeeper, boss and labourer, manager and clerk were suddenly equal. Everyone became a postcard. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue with essays by Tom Phillips, Dr Elizabeth Edwards, Curator of Photographs at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, with a preface by James Fenton, poet and essayist. The Model Ship Her Role In History By Norman Napier Boyd
The theme of the book is the practical part played by the model in maritime development, arranged in roughly chronological order - from Ancient Egypts; funerary model role, to the seventeenth century's use of the model in illustrating naval design developments to such modern naval architecture aspects as tank testing, stability simulation, war-damage control and even to its use in filming naval battles (such as the television series Hornblower). A major aim is to help the reader acquire a critical eye for classifyingmodel types and list many of the major model collections. It is not, however, a how-to-do-it model guide. While the book will explain and illustrate the undoubted aesthetic qualities of models for those interested in maritime history, it will be a particularly useful reference work for collectors, dealers and museum staff with a commercial interest in ship models.
Collecting Dolls Reference And Price Guide By Constance King
Antique dolls are one of the liveliest sectors of the collectors' marker and in general have been a good investment over the years. Constance King, who has been writing, lecturing, collecting and dealing in dolls for many years, has produced an informative book which will help doll enthusiasts to identify and date dolls and assess their value. Children have played with dolls since the beginning of civilisation and by the 17th century there were commercial doll makers and costumiers. Small versions, for adult curiosity cabinets, were made to the highest standards, while roughly turned woodens served the needs of ordinary children. In the 19th century the widest range of dolls was produced and the great German and French industries were established. As collectors are most interested in this period, the book concentrates mainly on dolls made between 1800 and 1940 and discusses their construction, manufacture and attributes. Through early carved wooden, wax, papier mâché, mechanical, china, German and French bisque, miniature, fabric and indestructible dolls, the author looks individually at over 500 examples and comments on their current value, history and potential. Some of the finest dolls to pass through the leading auction rooms are included, alongside especially photographed day-to-day pieces from dealers and collectors. Prices are not based on a single auction realisation but are assessed from long-term trends. Annual price revision lists will keep the book up to date, making it an invaluable aid to collectors, dealers and everyone interested in learning more about this rewarding subject. The Author: Constance King has written ten books on antique toys and dolls, including the two most comprehensive histories of doll's houses and antique dolls, and contributes articles regularly to quality magazines, both in the UK, on the Continent and in the USA. She has also lectured on dolls to specialist audiences in Australia, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands and France, appears regularly on TV and radio programmes and deals in antique dolls and toys in Bath. She is a former editor of Doll Pages: 280 Illustrations: 110 col. 390 b&w ISBN: 1 85149 254 2 Price: $49.50
Sauce Labels John Salter The Book ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Silver bottle labels for oil and vinegar (generally called sauce labels) first made their appearance in the 1750s to adorn oil and vinegar bottles either in a two-bottle stand, or in a five-item Warwick cruet. This book reflects the lively interest in sauce labels of several long-standing active members of the Wine Circle and is a book for collectors of silver, glass and recipes. It explores two aspects of antiquarian interest: the collection of silver and of glass. There is an inter-relation between the sauce label and bottle frames, both made of silver, and the various types of glass bottles, decanters and vessels that the labels once adorned. It is the first detailed work to be published on the subject of silver labels to adorn cruets - soy, vinegar and pickle bottles in the frame. Frames and their bottles can still be bought for use on the dining table, often in conjuction with flavoured vinegars purchased at the supermarket and then decanted. The book affords an opportunity for the glass enthusiast to broaden knowledge in conjunction with the study of datable silver. Also featured are many examples of printed ephemera, detailing recipes of various dishes and sauces; gastronomic delights for the dinner party host to delve into to impress both family and guests. Written by an expert, this is the ideal work with which to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Wine Label Circle. This is the first comprehensive work to be published on the subject Professor John Salter is an expert in the field. The book includes 1,400 particulars of labels features 500 sauce titles (including some from the United States) showcases 285 photographs of labels describes 229 makers provides 108 recipes or explanations details 40 shapes or styles The Author -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Professor John Salter was educated at Oxford University and is a distinguished international lawyer. He is a past Chairman of the Silver Society and a past President of The Wine Label Circle. He has written extensively on Scottish silver and for The Proceedings of The Silver Collectors, The Silver Society Journal and Country Life. Focke-wulf Fw 190a An Illustrated History Of The Luftwaffe's Fighter
Focke-Wulf Fw 190A An Illustrated History of the Luftwaffe's Legendary Fighter Aircraft Dietmar Hermann x 11 Illustrations: over 340 b/w and color photographs, profiles, line schemes Pages: 224 pages $59.95 hard cover This book deals with the development history and testing of this fighter aircraft and production of the early variants of the Fw 190 A. An interesting comparison between the Bf 109 and the Fw 190 shows the strengths and weaknesses of the two aircraft, and authentic reports by former test pilots of Focke-Wulf and the Rechlin Test Station document the aircraft's performance. Also covered are the later torpedo-carrier and reconnaissance versions of the Fw 190. Together with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 formed the standard equipment of the German fighter arm in the Second World War and today is considered one of the most capable fighters of that period. Initial flight trials in 1939 revealed a number of shortcomings, nevertheless the basic concept of the Fw 190 proved extremely successful. In contrast to the Bf 109, which was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-vee engine, in developing the Fw 190 Prof. Kurt Tank selected the BMW 801, an air-cooled radial engine that was less sensitive to battle damage. The broad-track undercarriage also gave the Focke-Wulf fighter much superior takeoff and landing characteristics. The Fw 190 entered quantity production by Focke-Wulf and license manufacturers Fieseler, AGO and Arado in 1941. It proved an immediate success in combat operations in 1942, proving itself superior to the Spitfire in some respects. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings, many of which have not been published before, this book provides both aircraft enthusiasts and modelers with a wealth of information, and fills a gap in the history of aircraft design in Germany.

This is an out of print hard cover book in mint condition. An intimate view of the lives of woment in Victorian America. This book offers a beautifully illustrated and compellingly argued case for the centrality of domestic architecture and decoration to the social identities and cultural values of middle-class Americans in the Victorian era. . . . Green's book was among a handful that located material objects within a rich and complex historical context and showed how they helped to constitute, not just ornament, middle-class family life. Despite the book's pioneering status, it stands up brilliantly over time. Indeed, given the renewed attention among historians, literary scholars, and gender studies scholars to domesticity and its myriad functions, Light of the Home will find a ready audience across disciplines. . . . The book will also, I am sure, continue to have a popular audience, especially among people who tour historic houses, support historic preservation, and browse museum gift shops.
