On May 1st, 2005, a Montana fly angler-turned-sailor arrived in the desert nation of Iraq as part of a coalition of forces working to bring peace to a war-torn countryside. A naval officer assigned to the Multi-National Corps Iraq, Joel Stewart found himself based in Camp Victory on the grounds of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's former Al Faw Palace. With numerous man-made lakes stocked by the former dictator with a variety of sport fish, in the down hours from a stressful job in a war zone, Commander Stewart did what any good fisherman would do -- he went fishing. With the foresight to have packed a fly rod in his sea bag, in a desert oasis built by a brutal dictator, Stewart began an odyssey unparalleled in the history of fishing. As he discovered the strange fish inhabiting the lakes in the Camp Victory compound, he began to share his catches with friends via the internet. Others, fascinated by Commander Stewart's catches, began to join him, and soon he was teaching numerous others how to fly fish. Thus, the Baghdad School of Fly Fishing was born, an angling club that remained in existence for the remainder of the time American troops were in Iraq. From the many tales of fish caught and released and hooked and lost, to the struggles of finding fishing equipment and how numerous individuals and companies stepped up to the plate, to the growth of the Baghdad Angler's Club, the story of fly fishing in Iraq will fascinate fishermen and non-anglers alike.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Collector Bookstore Quick Notes: The author, Ralph W. Moon, made bamboo fly rods for over 50 years. In the 1970s, he began teaching others this craft to rodmakers, fly clubs and colleges. Included in the book are Ralph's thoughts on classic fly rods, his life-long passion for bamboo and more. Publishers Full Description: One of the most beloved, and learned, men in the modern history of rodmaking was Ralph W. Moon. Having spent over a half century at the rod bench, from the 1970s onward Ralph mentored dozens of beginning rodmakers, teaching classes on the art at colleges, fly clubs, and FFF conclaves around the Pacific Northwest. Gregory Shockley--a noted rodmaker who learned the trade from Ralph Moon--has compiled and edited a selection of Ralph's writings sure to please everyone from beginning builders to seasoned veterans. They clearly reveal Ralph's towering intellect and excellent command of the language (many people don't know he was once a college English instructor). Included in the book are Ralph's thoughts on classic fly rods, his life-long passion for bamboo, and even scholarly articles on the origins of the word "Caddis" and a history of an early Western fly angler, Wilford Woodruff. Of lasting value is his chapter on Spiral Bamboo Fly Rods (Ralph being one of the few to actually build spirals) and the most exhaustive analysis heretofore published on the historical development, ergonomic science behind, and modern development of fly rod grips. But perhaps the most delightful selection is what he called his "Bamboo Heresies," folksy commentaries and quips on all aspects of rod building he often related on-line and in emails. Having intended to collect these into a book, his untimely passing earlier this year precluded this until Gregory Shockley dedicated his time and effort to go through the huge piles of Ralph's paper and correspondence to collect a selection of Ralph's quotations sure to make everyone smile. Gregory Shockley contributed a heartfelt introduction summing up his two decades of experiences with this kind and gentle soul. Noted authors Buck Goodrich and Jon Lyman also contributed remembrances of Ralph that help to document his wide influence in the fly fishing world. Ralph W. Moon's distinctive voice can be found on every page of this book. It is a lasting tribute to a man who's legacy was great, and a wonderful primer on all aspects of bamboo rodmaking and fishing bamboo for all readers. This is the third volume in the Fly Angler's Desktop Library.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Spoons probably have the longest history of any artifact and have been made ever since man discovered that handling liquids was vital to his existence. In this new color edition of a popular title, Simon Moore traces the history of English spoons, noting their social position in history and the many changes in style and form as their versatility was discovered. Spoons that once graced medieval ducal tables and those of base metal used by commoners are illustrated and described. The author gives collectors some guidelines to follow should they find an antique spoon of unknown origin and date or be asked for an opinion. For this second edition the coverage of the British Arts and Crafts Movement has been expanded, examining its contribution to European design at the turn of the nineteenth century and showing how this influence was revisited on British design in the following decades.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Men of Honor contains more than 100 official citations for bravery above and beyond the call of duty along with several eyewitness acounts such as the following excerpt: ... When we approached the area, Captain Pless asked the crew, "you all with me?" He knew the answer would be yes. As we flew on, we saw four U.S. personnel laying on the beach and around them, not less forty or fifty armed Viet Cong. They, the V.C., were beating the helpless personnel. As we flew over the group of people, one of the beach waved to us, and for his efforts got a rifle butt in the face. The V.C. were too close to the Americans to safely fire at them, but the V.C. were killing them anyway, so Captain Pless ordered the right door gunner, Gunnery Sergeant Poulson, to fire on them. It took only a short burst to send the V.C. running for cover. When Captain Pless saw this, he immediately rolled in hot with rockets and guns. The smoke from our W.P. rockets obscured the V.C. who were running when we started our attack, but Captain Pless continued to fire into the smoke, displaying the most remarkable airmanship I have ever seen in my eighteen months in country as an air crewman. As crewchief of the aircraft, and knowing its capabilities, I couldn't believe what he was making that belo do, but when the smoke started to clear, I saw bodies laying everywhere . . . Along with the above there are short biographies of all thirty-eight men, newspaper articles, and photographs. Men of Honor is a look at only a few of the many heroes of the United States Marine Corps: Kenneth D. Bailey, Harvey C. Barnum, John Basilone, Gregory Boyington, Martin L. Brandtner. Evans F. Collector Bookstore Quick Notes: The primary emphasis of this reference is on the quilts and quilters who made them, particularly rural homesteaders in the Southern Appalachian region of the U.S. Contains numerous period photos and detailed histories of farmers wives and other rural quilters, as well as detailed photos of their magnificient creations. Publishers Full Description: Quilts are a reflection of the people who make, use, and cherish them through the years. John Rice Irwin has personally conducted interviews with hundreds of old-time quiltmakers, some of whom were over one hundred years old. Detailed photographs taken by Pulitzer Prize winner Robin Hood depict an opulent conglomeration of quilts, from the community quilt which became known as the Murder Quilt. More importantly, Irwin looks under the quilts, at the lives of the people who created and used them. He explores their ambitions and aspirations, their struggles and disappointments. From the young ladies of Salem Valley who pieced a quilt for the town's most eligible bachelor in the hope that one of them would sleep under it, to the retired physician who began quilting in his late sixties to fill his spare time, Irwin presents their stories with compassion and candor. The first questions a beginning lure collector usually asks are: 'What is it?'; 'What is it worth?'; and 'Who made it?' In order to provide these answers and facilitate the reader's understanding of antique fishing lures, the authors of this book have intentionally avoided lengthy pages of text. Instead, they have used excellent color photographs and a lifetime of knowledge and experience with fishing lures to create the most complete and convenient single volume available today: Fishing Lure Collectibles, An Encyclopedia of the Early Years, 1840 to 1940. This benchmark concept has proven its acceptance among its readers by becoming Collector Books' bestselling book on collectible fishing lures. That the tackle collecting hobby is difficult to learn is undeniable, and it is for this reason that these foremost experts prepared this helpful publication. As one of the three founders of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club and editor of its magazine, Dudley Murphy, along with noted lure collector Rick Edmisten, bring a combined total of over 75 years of advanced collecting experience to this book.

While working in a classic tradition inspierd by the art of ancient and Renaissance Italy, Marioni has invented fresh forms and color combinations that carry the art forward into a new millennium. This stunning volume brilliantly captures the beauty of Marioni's art. DANTE MARIONI is a Seattle artist whose graceful, blown-glass vessels are internationally recognized for their vibrant color and classic design. Marioni has a love and an enduring respect for the process of glassblowing, a technique developed by ancient glassmakers during the first century B.C. For Marioni, making objects is about the art of glassblowing rather than the creation of glass art, the process rather than the result. His elegant works are the radiant record of his ongoing relationship with this material. Through the process of making his vessels -- which are inspired by forms found in the ancient and Renaissance art of Italy -- Marioni has entered a centuries-long artistic conversation about classical design, proportion, and aesthetics that dates back to the first Roman emperors who looked at Greek art and to the first Renaissance artists who rediscovered classical antiquity. Confident in the strength of his vision and in his mastery of a demanding medium, Marioni has unselfconsciously and studiously pursued his own interpretation of classical design, resulting in forms and colors in glass that are inventive, fresh, and tradition-breaking. Marioni's distinctive glass vessels are found in the collections of art museums, corporations, and private collectors worldwide.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas.
