Lovely cream color majolica glaze on this antique stove tile. The central design is that of a woman, facing left, and wearing a scarf over and around her head. To date, there is only 1 recorded design of a stove tile made by the Kensington Art Tile Company, and this is it! The company was only in business from 1885 - 1893. The tile measures 3 1/8" in diameter - across the back of the tile. Impressed Kensington Art Tile mark on the back. Minor glaze wear to the inside and outside rims - the central profile shows beautifully. (#Stove023)

This antique tile was made by J H Barratt & Company, in Stoke on Trent, England, in 1910. George Cartlidge was the "sculptor" of this photographic tile. This depicts Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. The tile measures 9" x 6". It is mounted in a period wood frame, which measures approx. 12 1/2" x 9 1/2". The tile is in very nice condition. Normal age crazing is present, as are under glaze bubbles in the lower left part of the tile. (#T-2035)

This small tile is very interesting. Done in a classic Delft blue and white, this tile has a white bisque face that stands up and out from the body of the tile. Measuring 2 5/8" x 2" by 1" high in relief. The back has incised markings of 2/6 and 1928. This was obviously made in 1928 - I suspect that the "2/6" might mean that there were 6 of these produced, and this is the second one. This looks to be a product of the Mosaic Tile Company, Zanesville, Ohio, however I can find no documentation on it. In excellent condition. (#T-1936)

This is an extremely unusual piece of pottery work. The scene shows an older gentleman, in old fashioned sleeping attire, including a cap, and holding a paper in his hands. Below him, to the right, is an extended hollow area, a stump, where you would keep your matches for lighting a fire. The cross hatched area on the lower left was the place used to strike the match. There are two original holes at the top, which is where the piece would have been mounted on a wall near the fireplace or stove.

Done in unglazed buff colored clay. This is handmade and beautifully formed. Not marked. Age is unknown. This is 5 7/8" wide, 7 5/8" high and at its deepest, it is 1 7/8". The condition is outstanding. (#T-1933)

This antique tile has a rarely found scene - two gentlemen are playing backgammon at a table, while a mother and baby stand watching the game and a dog is lying at their feet. Done in a typical Victorian green majolica glaze - this measures 4 1/2" square. Circa 1890. This could easily have been made by the J & J G Low Art Tile Company. If not by them, then made by one of the other highly recognized tile manufacturers of the late 19th century. There is the modeller's cipher in the lower right corner - either "WR" or "VR". In excellent condition. (#T1505)

Nice group of three matching stove tiles, collected over the years. All are identical except for the glaze; one is bright green, another dark blue, and the third is unglazed. None of these are marked - all are circa 1890's - American. They measure 2" in diameter across the back. The blue one has a small glaze chip on the bottom edge - the others are close to mint condition. (BxStove051)

This is a large stove tile in a very unusual mint green color. I've never seen this color before! Measures 3 1/2" in diameter, relief is medium to low. This is a portrait of a woman, facing left. Unmarked. Small glaze nips under the hole, on the left edge, and to a couple higher areas - the stuff under her eye is gone (it was dirt!). There is a chip out of the back, which does not affect the tile face. Center bolt hole was used to attach this to a parlor stove - circa 1880.

This stove tile depicts a portrait of a young boy. He is adorned with a lacy collar (typical of Victorian costume) and a cap. Measuring 3" in diameter, this is done in an unusual green majolica glaze. Generally in nice condition - there are minor nips around the bolt hole, a small section of his collar, and minor rim roughness. The tile bears Isaac Broome's cipher (a conjoined I and B) to the right of the bottom of the child's' cap (at about 4 o'clock). Unmarked on the back - made at either the Providential Tile Company of the Trent Tile Company. Signed Broome stove tiles are one of the harder antique tiles to come across.

Pair Beaver Falls Portrait Stove Tiles $245.00

This is an attractive pair of matched stove tiles - they feature ladies profiles, and are done in a lovely medium to light blue majolica glaze. Each tile has a center hole - this was one of the methods used to attach the tile to the parlor stove. (The other, more common method, was the use of an outside "lip" on the tile, and a bracket went across the back of the tile on the interior of the stove.)

Each tile measures 3 1/2" in diameter (across the back). The designs are modeled in medium relief. Both tiles show glaze wear and nips, primarily on the higher spots above the foreheads. Please see photos for closeups. They still display very nicely.

Both are unmarked, American, circa 1890. There were only a few companies that made stove tiles - so, they were probably made by either Providential Tile Company, Trent Tile Company, or the Beaver Falls Art Tile Company. (#T1331)

Key Words: portrait tile, profile tiles, Victorian, antique, ceramic, vintage  This fabulous round stove tile measures 4" in diameter. The design is molded in very high relief, and shows a portrait of a heavily bearded man. He is wearing a feathered hat and the ruffles on his collar are showing. I believe this was probably made by the Zanesville Majolica Company, of Zanesville, Ohio, 1882 - 1884. See bottom right photo in "American Art Tile" by Norman Karlson for the same interior design. Done in rich brown majolica glazes, with mottled edges, this is in outstanding condition.

A super set of 4 stove tiles, made by the Providential Tile Works, of Trenton, New Jersey. These date around 1880 - 1890 and all 4 are the same design - 5 open flowers - probably sunflowers. Done in a greenish gold majolica glaze (very typical of the period), each tile measures 2 5/8" in diameter (across the back). Two tiles have had hangers fashioned for the back, two do not. The mark on these is unusual - T.P.T.W. - which stands for "The Providential Tile Works" - usually displayed as PTW. All four tiles are in excellent condition. Great for antique parlor stove restoration, or to add to your collection! (#T-1125)

This is molded in relief and has a faience body. Marked Tuileries de Marcke -Lez -Courtrai Belgium on the reverse. There are 2 small chips to the backside corners, otherwise in excellent condition. I believe this dates around 1940, but it could be earlier. (#T-1405)  This 6" square tile depicts John Bright, and is done in a honey amber majolica glaze. Made by J C Edwards, of England, circa 1890, tiles from this company are hard to come by. John Bright was an important figure in British social and political areas. More information on him can be found on the web doing a search under his name. Executed in both molded relief and intaglio techniques. There is some minor edge roughness, and minimal surface glaze wear. Generally, very nice condition. (#1557)

Key Words: portrait profile tiles  For pottery collectors, the subject matter of this tile just doesn’t get any better! Shows a young boy hugging and kissing a large pot. Done in a blue to bluish green majolica glaze - this oval tile would probably have been originally used for ornamentation in a parlor stove. Dating from circa 1890, this is molded in extremely high relief. Country of origin not known, but probably English. Measures 8" x 4 ¾". Back side has chipping. There is a crack which extends down from his front foot to the tile edge, runs horizontally then goes back up near his other foot. The front surface and relief work are in excellent condition. (#T-1053)
