One of the most ancient of the Egyptian deities, the Goddess Hathor is known as The Great One of Many Names. The 9 3/4 x 11 3/4 inch hand crafted papyrus painting depicts Hathor as the Cow Goddess with a small horn set into a sun disk. As the Sky Goddess, Hathor welcomes the dead into a new life, and provides the milk which nurtures us while alive.

Vivid gold, copper, turquoise and red colors are prominent in the artwork as they represent the many parts of Hathor’s realm. The sun, sky, and blood life line are all important elements in Hathor’s story. The artist’s initials H A can be found at the left hand bottom corner.

There is some age related scuffing and wear to the frame and browning of the print but this does not detract over-all from a wonderful vintage collectible.  This wonderful primitive print depicts a Native American Indian using his reflection at the water’s edge to apply face and body paint for a ceremonial event.

Signed in pencil on the lower right side, this art piece measures 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 inch framed size, with the etching being 7 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches.

The etching depicts a centuries old several stories stone house with a female figure in the foreground wearing a long dress, apron, and her head covered by a kerchief. Two figures in similar dress but wearing country peasant style hats can be seen in the background. Earth tone colors predominate in brown, cream, black, and white shades.

Below the etching are three penciled entries. The artist signature, H. Leisch, is on the right hand side. The center has a written name, Robert Holz, which we believe to be the title of the stone house etching, and the left hand side has what appears to be the word, Road accompanied by a word we can not decipher, which is most likely the location of this stone house.

The plastic frame has a gold antique marbled affect with black edges, and is in very good vintage condition, along with the glass covered print. We do note, and our pictures show, that there is a crease in the paper backing which most likely occurred before framing. There is also some age related browning on the silk fabric, but this is part of its 70 year old history. With his quality artwork on display at both the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Richardson Rome opened his own studio during the early 1930’s in Estes Park Colorado. He spent many years creating landscape scenes of the Rocky Mountains, and etchings of natural wildlife.

This original early etching, titled, Evening depicts two mallard ducks returning to their marsh sanctuary. The entire framed size is 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches with the etching measuring 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches. The reproduced signature of the artist can be found on the right hand side, under the etching. There is slight age fading on the mat area, and some staining to the paper on the backside.

There is biographical information about the artist on the backside of the etching along with a leather looped hanger. This is a marvelous vintage print by an acclaimed national artist.  Known for his Rocky Mountain landscapes, and his natural wildlife etchings, Richardson Rome’s work can be found hanging in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the Brooklyn Museum as well as in art galleries across the U.S.A.

Born in Minnesota in 1902, the artist followed varied career paths before opening his own studio in Estes Park, Colorado in the early thirties. Time spent as a wrangler in his early years inspired much of his art work, making him a keen observer of nature and landscapes.

This thirties/forties etching measures 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches in total framed size, with the matted etching being 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches. Simply titled, Morning, it depicts several mallard ducks taking flight from their marsh sanctuary to search for the day’s food. Richardson Rome’s reproduced signature is on the bottom right hand side of the etching. We do note slight age fading or burn to the surrounding mat area, and this can be seen in our pictures.

About the artist information can be found on the backside, along with a leather loop hanger, making this nature enthusiast’s etching ready for display.  Sydney Zoltan Lucas is the SZL trademark name and the founder of the Paris Etching Society. Lesser known artists sponsored by Lucas were able to focus on the creative aspect of their artistry, rather than worrying about the marketing and sale of their etchings.

The great majority of the etchings were done during the 30’s/40’s time period, and with their watercolor appearance, are known as aquatint prints. The Arched Bridge by the artist Gusty has a gold tone metal framed size of 8 1/4 x 7 inches with the etching being 3 1/2 x 5 inches and is double matted under a glass cover. A lovely thatched cottage is at the left of the etching with a dirt path or walkway. This stone bridge has two arches and its construction most likely dates back hundreds of years.

The print, with the signature of the artist, and the frame are in fine vintage condition. This etching has the documented SZL triangle marking and description of the Paris Etching Society, along with the #5. Mr. Lucas also had a print shop and did make reproductions from original etchings. Those replicated etchings were marked with the SZL in a circle, rather than the triangle marking. In addition, the paper label on the backside of the print states that an etching is only considered a Genuine Original when it is done completely by hand, without the use of any mechanical process.   During the late forties, fifties time frame, a Polynesian/Hawaiian fascination was in place throughout the U.S.A. Books and Broadway musicals such as James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific, and The King and I introduced Americans to these cultures.

Marwal Industries, located in Miami, Florida, offered a wide variety of quality Plaster of Paris/Chalkware statuary with the Hawaiian, Polynesian and Asian themes. During more than a twenty year period from the 1940’s through the end of the 1960’s, this art company produced head and shoulder busts of both men and women, large garden statues of animals and humans, and female nude forms (now considered hard to find).

Our modest nude statuary stands 20 inches tall, measures 10 3/4 inches front to back, and sits on a 6 1/4 inch base made to resemble perhaps a scalloped shell. She is done in a gold tone with subtle brown accents. Her hair is drawn into a pony-tail at the back and she has her hands partially covering her breasts.

The Hawaiian/Polynesian lady has no cracks or chips. There are a few raised dits and blemishes in the plaster that were formed during the manufacturing process, as well as some minor unevenness of the gold color application, but over-all, the figure is in fine vintage condition. Two Marwal medallion shapes are embossed on the figure, one on the bottom right, and a second on the back of the statue.

Although of chalkware/Plaster of Paris construction, this is not a light-weight piece. The weight of this statue is slightly more than sixteen pounds before packaging. For anyone considering the purchase of this marvelous retro piece, please know we will ensure its safe transit with extra care and plenty of padding/packaging material. This will be treated by both the U.S. Postal Service and UPS as an oversized package and shipping may be quite costly depending on the shipping destination (Item will be shipping from our Florida location). For shipping quote, please email us your shipping address.

For those customers located in Florida, we can hand-deliver the item within a 40 mile radius of the Winter Haven, FL area; Orlando, Tampa, St. Pete is fine. Please email us for more information.
