What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Art?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
Beginning his career in advertisement and as a graphic designer, Kevin Platt turned his fascination with Cornwell, England into a new career pathway with sea and landscapes. The York print, signed by the artist in the bottom right hand corner, captures the atmosphere of a by-gone era. With its rows of shops on cobblestone streets and horse and buggies, the 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inch print is a visual trip down memory lane.

The intricately detailed frame, measuring 7 3/4 x 9 3/8 inches also qualifies as a work of art. Beveled molding at all four corners, round-over molding with relief sections, and angled molding combine to give the print a shadow-box appearance. The rich, multi-grain oak wood enhances the print and complements the color tones.

Purchased by the sole previous owner on a trip to England during the 1970’s, the print is in fine vintage condition although we do note a slight ding to the bottom beveled wood on the right side. The saw-toothed hanger on the backside makes this wonderful Petergate – York print ready to display.  This is a terrific opportunity to own a marvelous Kevin Platt print entitled, Staithes in a shadow box oak frame that is A-1 quality, too. The outside frame measures 7 3/4 x 9 3/8 inches and the display surface for the print is 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches.

The nautical themed print features fishing boats and houses along the coastline in the village of Staithes which captures the flavor of a by-gone era. Complementing the scene is a multi-grained oak frame which is a work of art in its own right. There are beveled edges on all four sides. Towards the print there is a relief cut that is fitted with round-over molding, mitred at the four corners with open sections. Past the round-over molding, there is angle molding down to the glass frame. The intricate and detailed woodwork achieves a shadow box appearance which draws the viewer into the rustic, seaside print.

Signed by Kevin Platt on the bottom right, this print was purchased by its one previous owner on a trip to England in the 1970’s. Sole distributors for this print are Pictures (UK) Ltd. There is a saw-toothed hanger on the backside to make this print ready for display.  This is a special and hard to find antique Masonic motto print titled, "What is a Mason?". This motto represents the faithful alliance of the Mason’s brotherhood. Elaborate symbols and meanings decorate this motto. (Below, I’ve included the meanings behind many of these symbols within this print) The text, symbols, and designs are all printed in shades of blue, which is very symbolic to the freemasons. Everything in this picture, including the text and columns, is centered with such balance and precision. A beehive is pictured on one of the columns. An interesting detail to this motto is that the poet emphasized certain profound words, ‘Brother’, ‘Trust’, ‘Light of Wisdom’, ‘Divine Password’, ‘Grand Master’, and ‘God’ to name a few. Under the decorative platform of this print on the left side in small letters are the words, "Fine Art Co.; 755 Walnut Street; Phila, PA.". The right side of print reads, "Copyright 1921 Oscar A DeLong". This print is in excellent original condition. The original black-painted molded wood frame is also in excellent original condition. Original glass and original paper backing. New metal hanger. Circa 1921.

*** I’ve included below some interesting INFORMATION ABOUT THE FREEMASONS:

"Who are Freemasons?

Freemasons are men (and in some places women) who voluntarily seek admission to a lodge, are accepted because they were tested and found to be of good moral character, with a belief in the divine, and uphold high moral, personal, and ethical standards. They participate and desire to participate with like-minded individuals in learning what Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth truly mean, practicing in these tenants both within and without lodge, in their various communities.

Freemasons are people from all walks life, from college students to presidents. Men from all walks have petitioned and received the degrees of the fraternity and have attended and served side by side with others who have elected to do the same.

Membership is Freemasonry is not a secret, as many masons proudly wear pins or rings proclaiming their fellowship. There are no secrets in Freemasonry, except for the most initiaic of rituals in the quest for light, and even those are not secret in their activity, but rather in their deeper meanings.

The lessons learned in Freemasonry are openly shared with wives, friends, coworkers and anyone who seeks their meaning on what the great fraternity is about. But, Freemasons are not boastful nor indolent in it's virtues and do not squander their opportunities to impart wisdom whenever possible. Practical duties of charity are planned for and carried out, personally and within a lodge. And lastly, but most importantly, the bonds of fidelity and brotherly love are practiced within the lodge and without towards all brothers and non-brothers alike, but with special consideration to brother master masons, where ever they may be."

*** The SYMBOLISM behind the Freemason’s COLOR BLUE:

"Within Freemasonry, the color blue is a symbol of universal friendship and benevolence, as it is the color of the vault of heaven. Blue is the only color other than white which should be used in a Master's Lodge for decorations."

- This was cited from: ephesians5-11.org/masonicritual/index.htm

*** MORE INFO ABOUT THE FREEMASON’S:

- "Some form of the "Square and Compasses" is the most widely used and known symbol of Masonry. In one way, this symbol is a kind of trademark for the fraternity, as the "golden arches" are for McDonald's. When you see the Square and Compasses on a building, you know that Masons meet there. And like all symbols, they have a meaning. The Square symbolizes things of the earth, and it also symbolizes honor, integrity, truthfulness, and the other ways we should relate to this world and the people in it. The Compasses symbolize things of the spirit, and the importance of a well-developed spiritual life, and also the importance of self-control--of keeping ourselves within bounds. The G stands for Geometry, the science which the ancients believed most revealed the glory of God and His works in the heavens, and it also stands for God, Who must be at the center of all our thoughts and of all our efforts. The meanings of most of the other Masonic symbols are obvious. For example, the gavel teaches the importance of self control and self-discipline. The hour-glass teaches us that time is always passing, and we should not put off important decisions.

- Masonry (or Freemasonry) is the oldest fraternity in the world. No one knows just how old it is because the actual origins have been lost in time."

- This was cited from trowel.com/flamason/what.htm

*** EXPLANATION OF THE MASON’S SYMBOLS:

-Let us begin with the "All seeing eye of G-OD" Never loose sight of the truth that GOD is everywhere. We may hide a sin from the rest of the world but HE knows and will ask for an explanation before the "Judgment Seat."

-We see the Trowel and the Gavel. The one is used to spread bonding cement of Brotherly Love and Friendship. The Gavel is used to knock the rough edges from off the Ashlar (which we are) the better to fit into the niche we are to occupy in the world.

-We find the twin pillars Boaz and Joachim. Boaz denotes strength. The strength of God supporting HIS children. JAOCHIN is the pillar of beauty. These are on each side of the entrance into King Solomon's Temple

-Next we find the Level and the Plumb. These are to keep us and our work erect, square, and plumb with the overall structure.

-Amongst the Twenty Four Inch gauge, the Square, and the Compasses is the letter "G". The letter "G" stands for Geometry upon which is or are based the important principles that are the foundations of all that we do.

-The letter "G" has a higher and more significance upon our daily lives. It stands for GOD.

-The twenty four inch gauge is divided into three equal parts. Eight hours for the worship of GOD, Eight hours to labor and eight hours to sleep.

-The Square is to square our actions with all mankind, and with GOD. The Compasses to keep us with in due bonds with all mankind and that we may not wander assay afar and loose sight of our GOD.

-The two globes to be found atop the pillars are a map of the world as we know it and of the Heavenly bodies we see with our eyes,

-All of the above is encircled with the Cable Tow. This Cable Tow which is ours will reach around the world but it will never break.

-The words "If within the reach of my Cable Tow" take on a new and deeper meaning as time passes.

From Wikipedia:

Early years

Lydia Gibson was born in 1891, one of three daughters of English-born architect Robert W. Gibson. She grew up in prosperity but seems to have been radicalized in her 20s during the movement for women's suffrage, in which she was an activist.[1] In the latter half of the 1910s, she began contributing her work to The Masses, a literary and artistic magazine with a distinct socialist orientation, published by Max Eastman and his sister Crystal in New York City.

In conjunction with her work with The Masses, Gibson met and worked with many other prominent political artists of the day, including Boardman Robinson, Art Young, Hugo Gellert, and Robert Minor. The anarchist Texan Minor fell in love with Gibson, but she initially declined the advances of the political cartoonist, whom she believed to still have been married.[2] After the Bolshevik Revolution of November 1917, Minor traveled to Soviet Russia, where he became committed to the communist cause and subsequently foreswore his anarchist beliefs and joined the underground Communist Party of America. In August 1920 Gibson also "changed her mind a little," this over matters of the heart and wrote to Robert Minor, then amorously involved and living with radical journalist Mary Heaton Vorse. Gibson signaled her intentions to Minor and eventually won his returned affection after the two had worked together in the offices of The Liberator in 1922.[3] The two married in 1923.[4]

In 1934, Gibson wrote and illustrated a children's book, The Teacup Whale, a tale which, while not explicitly radical, invited children to dream big dreams and to challenge the contrary opinions of doubters.[4]

Gibson and Minor remained together until the latter's death of a heart attack in 1952.

Later life and death

Lydia Gibson remained loyal to the Communist Party even after the revelations of Nikita Khrushchev in 1956. In 1962 she loaned the party $5,000 in US Treasury Bonds to bail out CPUSA General Secretary Gus Hall from jail.[5]

Lydia Gibson died in 1964.

I bought an amazing collection of hand made antique silhouettes from an estate about 20 yrs ago and have had them all safely stored in a dry cool smoke free environment for all this time. I had considered framing them all and doing an entire wall of my home with them; however, I have now decided to part with them. Please search for "silhoette" in my store to view others. These are rare, wonderful and special, whimsical, unusual and well done.

All of these are on some sort of beige background (a few exceptions) and nearly all have a plastic covering. I am selling them as found. These are not professionally or acid free preserved or mounted. Some have minor discoloration, and my photos show a glare in some from the plastic. The plastic is generally stapled onto the edges.

I would recommend having these professionally remounted. My price reflects these as they are and I am not planning on matting or framing these...I will leave that up to the person or people who buy them.

Priced accordingly.  Not only was Lionel Barrymore a famous stage and screen actor but he was also a gifted artist as well. Throughout the sixties, he created many gold foil etched prints featuring the seaside and boating themes. This wood framed 8 3/4 x 10 3/4 inch Shoreside Farm print depicts a rustic farm setting with trees and a boat in the forefront.

Foil medium art does naturally expand and shrink which causes some creasing over time, but over-all, the print is in fine vintage condition. Titled and signed by Lionel Barrymore, the print has a wire hanger attached to the backside, making it display ready.  Huge Late Victorian early Edwardian majestically framed chromolithograph by Hallen and Weiner. Under thick wavy and seed bubble glass, this magnificent framed antique print captures the excitement of the chase. Artist J.F. Hunter?

***I’VE INCLUDED A SHORT BIO ABOUT THE FAMOUS MASONIC POET, BROTHER DOUGLAS MALLOCH:

Brother Douglas Malloch (b.1877 - d.1938) was an American poet, short story writer, and associate editor of American Lumberman magazine. He was very popular on the lecture circuit doing public readings of his stories and poems. Malloch's name became a familiar one at the dawn of the 20th century to many thousands of men who ranged the forests and felled the trees. As reviewers wrote, "Malloch’s philosophy is the philosophy of contentment." "He sings of the open, of hard work, of exposure, of rough living and rough loving.

John R. Brethour Jr. For more of John's original works see our sister TIAS web shop TearDrop Memories.  This is a delightful antique Buzza Mother motto titled, "To Mother" and written by famous poet, Lawrence Hawthorne. The picture is bright and vivid with a man and woman dressed in fancy formal attire. The sentiment is very sweet. Below the poem is reads, "A Buzza Motto c.1927". Beside that it reads, "From the writings of Lawrence Hawthorne". Also, the letter ‘H’ can be found on the far right of the print within the fence. I believe it’s an initial belonging to the illustrator of this beautiful scene. The original molded and textured wood frame retains the original black color paint with gold highlights. Both the print and frame are in excellent original condition. Original glass and metal hanger. Missing paper backing. Circa 1927.  This pair of terrific chalkware sculptures was produced by the Modern Art Co. of Milwaukee Wisconsin back in 1975. Each measures 8 inches x 8 1/4 inches with an outer brown border made to resemble a wooden picture frame.

Both plaster/chalkware pieces have recessed designs – one of a windmill and house done in yellow and brown tones with accents of red and green. The second wall hanging has a water wheel and barn done in yellow, brown, and ivory coloring.

The backside has a wire hanger in place for each wall hanging as well as the stamped Modern Art Company name. Both have impressed on the bottom front, ’75 Modern Art Co., Inc.

Emanuel C. Beam was when he died and was memorialized in this Victorian Eastlake style walnut wood shadow box with bright silverplate coffin casket plaque.

Fine 19th century coffin silk lines this antique memento mori behind thick wavy glass.

Crisp cabinet card photo from New Jersey of the deceased, pre mortem, looks back from the 1880s  This white enamelware tea/ coffee pot has black trim, spout and handle. The exterior condition is good but I would not use it for anythign but decoration since the inside is quite stained. The black paint is chipped from the knob on the lid and there are a couple of spots with no enamel as show in photos. Measures 7 inches high to top of lid and has a base of 5 inches.

One leg of the toad is broken, there is still some dirt on the teapot which could be easily cleaned. No other faults.

5,8 x 5 x 4,2 inches.

This is a very scarce Yixing tea-pot which definitely draws attention when displayed.

It would make a great gift for tea pot collectors.

Yixing clay (simplified Chinese: 宜兴; traditional Chinese: 宜興) is a type of clay from the region near the city of Yixing in Jiangsu province, China. Its use dates back to the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279).

From the 17th century on, the ware was commonly exported to Europe. The finished stoneware, which is used for teaware and other small items, are usually red or brown in colour. They are known as Purple Sand ware, and are typically unglazed.  This is a hard to find and very endearing antique embossed sepia print of young Mary praying. The molded wood frame retains the original gold paint. Original paper backing, slightly torn. Original metal hanger. The print has some very light spotting throughout. The frame is in excellent original condition. The bottom right corner of print is stamped, "C260". Circa 1920’s.  Lunatics blowing a noisemaker or tin horn into a cat's ear, while pointing to dead bird hanging out of a birdcage.

Fable or fairy tale?

May be signed S. Marks?

I'm at a loss for words here and hope someone may share some details on who, what and where, though mostly why?  This is a sweet and captivating antique print. This picture captures a precious tender moment in the lives of a mother and her two children. Sitting on the floor beside them is a cute pair of Dutch wooden clogs. The bottom of the frame has a brass plaque with the title, "Mother Love". The details are humble and the scene evokes a feeling of kindheartedness and tenderness. Their faces are full of expression and love. The original wood frame has a nice natural original finish and is very complimentary to the print. Both the print and frame are in excellent original condition. Original glass and wire hanger. Circa 1910.

If you come accross any information on this artist please let me know. I could not find anything on him.
