A truely exceptional piece of art, this is an engraving of Baby Stuart that reads London published 1908 by Harry C Dickens 26 regent street SW

and then is embossed in the lower right corner FO and in the right corner is pencil signed Jeff Stevenson.

Feels velvet like and is museum mounted and framed with a suede green matt. The previous owner affixed the origional label from M. Knoedler & Co, Fifth Ave NY.

Baby Stuart was from Royalty and later on became King James of England in 1684.

I am happy to provide more pictures upon request, I do apologize for the glare on some of the pictures shown.  19th century oil painting of the famous Bakers Chocolate Girl with tray.

This old painting is monogramed signed lower left, but I cannot make it out. Also dated 1877. Most likley european. The size is 16 1/4 x 11 1/2 encased in aved gilded frame with wear, 22 x 17 inches. Craquelure throughout & paint flecking in lower margin, some stretcher bar wear, and a small puncture in lower mid margin.

This piece cries out to be restored.  A wonderful drawing (?) of Lady Liberty, she is embossed and in person you can see the raised details on her dress. Framed in a beautiful gold art nouveau wood frame under U.V. glass. Measures 12 1/2 x 4 inches and framed is 15 x 9 1/2 inches.  A wonderful sepia drawing of a cherub getting his wing sewn by a maiden. Jospeh Lauber (1855-1948) was born in Germany and immigrated to the states in 1864 to New York. He became a noted muralist, stained glass designer for Tiffany and whose works include the inside Trinity Church NY and The House of Representatives in Washington DC. This ink sketch measures 11 3/4 x 16 3/4 and has been framed in a wonderful art nouveau gold gilt frame that measures 20 5/8 x 24 1/2 inches.

The frame has minute blemishes for its age. signed lower right with butterfly drawing outside the margin.

Art work measuring 6 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches, this New England snow scene has been recently museum mounted and rematted in its origional gold-tone 11 3/4 x 11 3/4 inch frame. More about Boris Riedel below:

Creator of the Chicagoan's first cover, Riedel served for a while as the magazine's art editor. He illustrated a book of poetry by Marie Hecht, a novel by J. V. Nicholson, and a children's book, The Timid Giant, written by advertising executive Earle Ludgin. Riedel also created movie posters for films starring Clara Bow, Lon Chaney, Sr., and Adolphe Menjou and contributed to The Linebook, a publication put out for WGN Radio, a Tribune Company outlet in Chicago   This is an ANTIQUE hand-colored engraving titled 'The Sporting Sweep'.

HUNTING versus REFORM

Plate 1 RI SPORTING ANECDOTES

H ALKEN

J. Harris, Sc.

Published Jan '83 (1883) by R ACKERMANN Jun at his ECLIPSE SPRING GALLERY 191 Regent Street At Chipping Sodbury Gloucestershire.

Part of the text says in part:

The sweep is a reformer. Duke Beaufort's brother, Lord Somerset is a candidate with opposition principles. Two reformers solicit the sweep but he says, "To Tell You The Truth Gemmen I Can't Vote for You cause I Unts With The Duke".

SIZE:

15" x 21"

Image inside plate is 11" x 15"

CONDITION:

Inside the plate, there is very light wear. The colors are still bright. No tears--one dog-ear on lower left. There are some pencil marks and some light scuffing. There is an overall tanning to the print. Purchased from a collector who kept it stored flat.

Henry Aiken was a man of considerable artistic attainments, his small pencil drawings in particular betraying much delicacy of execution. Essentially an artist of the country, he was admirably equipped to delineate hunting scenes, the engravings of which are in considerable request at the present day. The leading firms which published his work, were Rudolph Ackermann, Thomas Maclean and S. & J. Fuller.

In 1833, Aiken painted The Quorn Hunt - eight scenes, engraved by Lewis, and printed in colours. These served to illustrate Fox-huntings published by Ackermann. This set also contains many portraits. Another series of pictures was Aiken's Sporting Anecdotes, of which perhaps the best-known is The Hunting Sweep, which was engraved by the painter himself. This sweep was a celebrated and popular character.

Whether there was any truth or not in the report that Aiken had originally been a huntsman or stud-groom, it is certain that he knew a great deal about horses, and was intimately acquainted with hunting in all its phases. The accuracy of his compositions is a sufficient demonstration of this. It may safely be averred, that hardly any artist ever displayed such an aptitude for depicting the various phases and incidents of a run, in which it was often his practice to include the portrait of some follower of hounds, well- known as a sporting character. As a rule, individual portraiture was not made the sole aim of his works, an exception to this must be mentioned in the case of the equestrian likeness of the Marquis of Anglesea, which was engraved by H. Meyer.

This is a wonderful original watercolor painting of a "Pair of Mallards" landing in a pond on the Eastern Shore of Maryland by John Sudy (1879-1960). The painting is in very good condition - the apparent foxing is almost all on the inside of the glass. This painting is in its original frame and has not been examined out of the frame. Sight - 12.5 inches by 18 inches, framed - 25.75 inches by 19.5 inches. Baltimore Gallery sticker and painting label on reverse.

John Sudy was a remarkable character as well as excellent wildlife artist. Taken from his obituary - He was born in 1879 in Prague in what was then Bohimia - now Czechoslovakia. His mother was Suzan Ponyatovsky, a well known artist. He began his art studies at age 9 in Berlin and at the outbreak of WWI was painting in Rome. He joined the army of the Austrian Empire and went to war against Russia, was soon captured and sent off to prison in Siberia. As the only officer in camp, Sudy led a mass escape of 2300 prisoners. From Siberia the group marched westward and 2 years later Mr. Sudy and 4 other prisoners arrived in Turkey.

He managed to reach the U.S. in 1921, where he settled in Easton, Maryland where he began studying and painting wildlife. Quite a linguist, at one time Mr. Sudy spoke 29 languages. He numbered among his close friends such financial greats as J. Pierpoint Morgan, John J. Raskob and George Offett.

Additional information added 1/25/11:

There is an important update. We recently did take the framing apart to clean the glass. While most of the foxing and discoloration was indeed on the glass, there was more foxing than we expected on the painting itself and we have lowered the price accordingly to $400.

It is still a nice painting from a most interesting artist. I recently spoke with someone from Easton, who was acquainted with Mr. Sudy. They said he was quite the character.
