Republican Convention Cincinnati June 14th.

"CONTINUE THAT I BROACHED IN JEST." - Shakespeare.

MEANING BEHIND THE CARTOON:

This cover appeared on newsstands as the Republican National Convention was beginning in Cincinnati on June 14 (the issues are postdated by 10 days). Although James Blaine was the front-runner, the outcome of the nomination was uncertain, as this cartoon indicates by the question mark on the slate, with eraser attached, and the circumspect quote from Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew'.

Artist Thomas Nast places himself center-stage to reveal his choices for the Republican ticket. Hamilton Fish was President Grant's well-respected secretary of state, but was not a contender at the convention. Nast's selection of Hayes for vice-president reflects the general sentiment that the Ohio governor was the best bet to take the second spot.

THE ARTIST: Thomas Nast (1840-1902)

Considered the greatest American political cartoonist, is most often remembered for his cartoon campaign in the 1870s against Boss Tweed and New York's corrupt Tammany Hall political machine. After Nast portrayed Tweed and the Tammany Ring pointing at each other in answer to the question, "Who stole the people's money?" Tweed is reported to have demanded, "Stop them damned pictures. I don't care what the papers write about me. My constituents can't read. But, damn it, they can see pictures." Nast was offered a half-million dollars to leave New York to study art in Europe but that only increased his determination. Five years later, in 1876, another cartoon by Nast would be used by Spanish authorities to identify Tweed after his escape from New York. Although his contribution to bringing down the Tweed Ring would remain the high point of his career, Nast's influence on American political culture went far beyond and continues today. Along with the Tammany Tiger, Nast created the G.O.P. Elephant, popularized the Democratic Donkey, and was the first to portray Santa Claus as the jolly, rotund, red-nosed character that is so familiar today.

Nast's career continued into the 1890s but after his departure from Harper's Weekly in 1886 he worked primarily on oil paintings and book illustrations. As Arthur Bartlett Maurice notes in his biographical sketch, it was not uncommon by 1902, when Nast was appointed consul general at Ecuador, for people to refer to him as "the late Thomas Nast." Although his major contributions to the art of political cartooning were all behind him, Nast's work inspired many if not all of the new generation of political cartoonists who worked for the daily press in the 1890s and early 1900s.-Jim Zwick, History of Political Cartooning.  This is an original PUCK magazine cover from September 19th, 1900.

THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL PARTY.

Illustration shows a tattered old man labeled "Silver Republicans" running into the open arms of Mark Hanna, "Chairman of Rep. Natl. Com.", behind Hanna is a building flying the banner of "McKinley & Sound Money" and with a cow labeled "Prosperity" looking out an open window.

MEANING BEHIND THE CARTOON:

Hanna deplored the rising clamor for a war with Spain in 1898, believing the conflict would hinder economic recovery. In constant consultation with McKinley, Hanna labored to rally support for the administration's diplomatic negotiations with Spain in the Senate. Fearing the Democrats would exploit a lack of action in the November midterm elections, Hanna joined McKinley and most of his conservative supporters in the Republican Party in assenting to war. As the economy recovered and international triumphs against Spain bolstered McKinley's popularity, the 1900 rematch was an easy victory for Hanna and "silver Republicans" came running back to him.

SIZE:

Approx 10" x 13.50"

CONDITION:

Text on the reverse. It has been kept flat and in protective sleeves for decades. These magazine covers are superb lithographs and have retained the rich color saturation--like they were just printed. The artist's character drawings are about the best you will find.

Puck (American Guilded Age Politics, Business and Culture): Puck holds an important place in the history of American satire. An Austrian, Joseph Keppler (1838-1894), moved to the United States in 1868 and within four years had become a leading artist for Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. In 1876 he became the founder, editor and a leading artist for his own creation, Puck. The periodical was initially meant to be America's answer to England's Punch, but under Keppler's astute editorship it introduced both art and articles of a much more biting nature.

These are two VINTAGE art deco blotters - one from the 'Norman Beauty Salon' in Los Angeles - "Skilled Operators in all Branches of Beauty Culture" and one from 'The Style Shop' in Portland Oregon - "Something New Every Day in Gowns and Dresses".

Images cannot show how beautiful these truly are. Great deco graphics embossed on fabric (feels like silk) in different patterns of flowers and abstract designs. Light bounces off of them like you would see on moiré. They almost glitter they are so vibrant.

They could be salesmen samples because it does mention the style number at the bottom.

This is a vintage poster for the play "The Venetian Twins" by Goldoni.

Printed in 1970 for the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis Minnesota.

Director: Robert David McDonald

Artist: Gordon Micunis

G70 (for Guthrie 1970).

This is my favorite art poster from this play. Mucunis was a well known theatre cover and print artist. One twin is a line drawing that lacks depth, the other is bright, colorful and full of movement. There is so much dimension with the large banners, peirrot/jester imagery, giant mask in corner--no margins which gives it a bigger feel.

The Play: Long-separated brothers who arrive at the same town of Verona on the same day, cause confusion when cash, jewels and declarations of love are handed to the wrong people. One is a rich but dimwitted merchant, the latter a high-principled gentleman -- both seeking love and fortune.

SIZE:

20" x 30.5"

CONDITION:

Excellent - no damage, tears, or fading, just a touch of handling wear. Stored flat in a portfolio folder. Printed on thick, quality paper.

INSURANCE EXTRA/OPTIONAL, AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. PAYPAL PAYMENT PREFERRED  Very unique and Very unusual type of artwork that only a minimal amount of artists still practice.

Believe this is some sort of Wood Burning Art. The artist drew out his image in pencil, then burned in the image for permanance, to create texture and depth.

WE GLADLY SELL WORLDWIDE ~ JUST ASK FOR SHIPPING QUOTE!!  RARE 1970 PeTeR MaX Manhattan Yellow Pages Phone Book

New York Telephone

THIS IS AN ULTRA RARE ITEM!! Printed in 1970, this 2,148 page Manhattan Phone Directory has a special cover illustrated by THE Mod Artist, Peter Max. It is extremely rare - can't find another one listed for sale anywhere on the internet, nor is it well documented anywhere.

I am fairly certain that Peter Max was only commissioned to do these special New York Telephone covers for 2 years (1970 and 1973) - until 2001, when he once again did the cover illustration for Verizon. I have the 1973 phone book listed also in my Tias webstore.

This phone book is well used - it is NOT a mint condition item - it was used in someone's home as the family phone book, so please keep that in mind. There is wear, soiling, bends and edge tears, and wear on the spine as well, where there is also a split. Pages are browned.

The colors in the photos are appearing a bit brighter and more vivid on the computer monitor than the actual item.

Please see photos to further clarify condition, and ask any questions you may have. This rare item is being sold "as is" with no refunds.

S/H is additional, and is based on zip code due to it's heavy weight. Sorry, International shipping is not available for this item.

The Nation's leading art education magazine - Leather, felt - Remington's masterworks - Winter scenes - seee the paintings - Peter & the wolf and more  Antique original 1915 book page illustrations from 'Mother Goose', re-arranged and edited by Eulalie Osgood Grover, illustrated by Frederick Richardson, Volland Popular Edition, published by M. A. Donohue & Company. Not a reproduction, but page from an old 1915 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page (the book covers were in bad shape so the interior pages were removed). Wonderful vintage prints which illustrate well known nursey rhymes with colorful pictures of children, animals and adults, with on-page copy of the rhyme in a box. Two-sided, different rhymes on each side, with a page size including the white border area around the print of generally about 10 to 10 1/2 inches high x 7 3/4 to 8 inches wide. The prints are a standard rectangular shape but have been shot at an angle (rather than "straight down") which gives the angular look in the images. Generally excellent condition with bright coloring, but please note that the page edges have been trimmed on many or all sides, and not always in a straight line. There is still sufficient white border areas on all sides to permit easy matting and framing in order to hang on a wall.

There are 27 total pages available, each listed and sold separately. Here we are listing "Robin and Richard, Were two pretty men" and "The two gray kits, And the gray kits' mother" back-to-back prints from the book. If you are not familiar with the Robin and Richard rhyme, it deals with two men who slept too long in bed. The two gray kits rhyme deals with two kittens and their cat mother who go over a bridge and the bridge breaks. If you need a listing of the exact words in the nursery rhymes (in case you are looking to match it to the way you remember it), please e-mail and that can be provided. For those looking for rhymes listing someone's name, the one with kittens mentions Tom Bolin. Please also note that condition-wise, on the kittens page, a child who formerly owned this book drew on the bottom portion of the page with pencil and crayon lines, with some of the crayon lines also on the lower part of the illustration. Matting could cover the drawn lines in the white border area and the crayon on the print is not too bad given the coloring, but you need to know it is there.

Make terrific gifts framed for children's rooms, play rooms, day care and nursery or school rooms, or for giving someone a print of an old rhyme which includes that person's name.  Antique original 1915 book page illustrations from 'Mother Goose', re-arranged and edited by Eulalie Osgood Grover, illustrated by Frederick Richardson, Volland Popular Edition, published by M. If matted for framing on this side, the lines in the white border area could be covered and we don't know that the ones in the illustration would be noticeable, but you should know this is there. On the woman side there is one blue line that is likely a crayon line in the sky area to the upper right of the copy box. We also don't believe this stands out much nor would be really noticed when hung on a wall.
