Zula Kenyon-Rare Original Pastel HAND-TINTED Coloring Artwork -Victorian Lady, Red Roses ~ Super ~ RARE ~ HARD TO LOCATE ~

WC138 TITLED: MY LUV'S LIKE A RED, RED ROSE.

THIS ORIGINAL VINTAGE PASTEL HAND TINTED ARTWORK ILLUSTRATION created by the renowned artist: ZULA KENYON.

I can see that the artwork was produced on a thicker artist poster-type board, approx. 1/16" thick.

Beautiful image of a Victorian woman in side portrait. Lovely soft pulled up brown hair. She is wearing a soft yellow chiffon or satin dress that has draped and fallen past her right shoulder. She is holding a rather large bouquet of red roses in her arms. Just beautiful! Coloring is not faded, still very vibrant.

Is SIGNED in the lower left hand corner, also in pastel color. The image is in wonderful condition. No creases, No tears, No stains of any kind. In the upper right hand corner we did try to show you two small areas that show wear or a spot that the framer tried to touch up with same background color. Not distracting since it is in the upper darker soft charcoal grey area.

This creation is also RARE for its LARGER SIZE. In its ORIGINAL ANTIQUE WOOD DARKER GESSO FRAME AND GLASS. Wiring on the back with a sticker by the framer of this piece. (Classic Designs in San Diego, CA).

The frame is original to the piece. With Original Glass. All gesso is intact. The raised up inner border of frame does show wear to the surface, as shown in our pictures. We cleaned the outside of the glass.

Do to an interested buyer, we were asked to take apart this picture. We did find that the back was marked: WC138 MY LUV'S LIKE A RED, RED ROSE. Kenyon Then instructions to any framer on how to present this print.

A question was asked if this was a pastel painting or a hand-tinted print. Still not certain ~ (please view photos). I was told that a pastel would rub off and a print would not. When I uncovered the back, there was some rub off, (Only on the edges which are UNDER THE FRAME EDGE and does not show in front view.) So decide for yourself. YOU WILL BE BUYING AS IS.

This STILL IS A VERY DESIRABLE ITEM ~ FIRST FOR THE ARTIST, SECOND FOR THE LARGE SIZE, THIRD FOR ITS GREAT CONDITION. Only will increase in value....

Overall the frame measures 16-1/8 inches wide by 23 inches high. Back measurement of picture is 14 inches wide by 20 inches high.

YOU WILL BE HARD-PRESSED TO FIND THIS TYPE OF ARTWORK IN THIS GREAT OF CONDITION!! AGAIN, A VERY RARE AND VALUABLE PIECE!!!

Artist SIGNED: Zula Kenyon ( 1873 - 1947 )

Zula Kenyon worked with many mediums with ease, but her favorite was pastels. Dissatified with the materials available, she preferred to create her own. She ground her own pastel colors and made her own canvases and this gave her pastels the strength and brillancy of oils. Most of Kenyon's subjects were painted before the 1920s. Zula Kenyon was one of the most popular artists of her time and was well known for her richness of color, perfection in drawing, and beauty of composition. Her work is increasingly in demand by collectors of this genre.  Vintage oil painting signed Mabel Remmers. Backside has old paper label: Fulton Canvas Boards, Devos & Raynolds Co. New York - Chicago, 18 x 24 inches. Not framed. Very nicely done, reminiscent of Van Gogh's style. Found a couple of auction sites listing this artist's work in 2004 and 2007; and one site said she was born in 1900, so she must be deceased by now since I doubt she is 112 years old. This was unframed when purchased but I found a nice frame that it fits into, see pictures. 1/12smc  Lively Mexican or Latin American Street/ Market Scene Oil Painting on Canvas Signed by Andersen 88". It measures 20" x 16". The condition is excellent. It is a stretched canvas ready to be framed.  Very nice vintage art. I believe this is a water color but have not taken it out of the frame to check; it could be a print, but does look like a water color. The artist's name signed in pencil below the picture looks like J Douril, but that is just a guess. It is very well done, but the frame is rather plain. Frame is 15.25 wide x 14. The picture itself is 8.25 wide x 7. 1/12brcs

A pair of Mid Century framed paint by number portraits of boxer dogs, nicely done. The 9 by 12 inch paintings are signed with the initials HMC and are mounted in 11-1/2" by 14-1/2" greenish-gold painted wood frames. The pictures are in great condition with no damage to the fronts, a little discoloration on the backs as shown. The frames are in very good condition as well.

2 Fabric Paintings of Pheasants. They measures 25" x 12" without the frames. The are both exquisite. Looks to be oil paint on a acetate fabric mounted on cardboard. They came framed behind glass. I removed them from the frame to get the first picture. The frames are just basic wood frames. You have the option of having them mailed with or without the frames. Shipping with the glass will cost more than mailing them either unframed or without the glass. There are no signatures but they are very nice. There are a few tears in the fabric right at the folding seam that won't show once framed. There are about 2 1" slices that must be from the catching on the nails of the frame.  Excellent quality Rose Painting by Sherry C. Nelson 1999 very delicate coloring frame is wood and measures 19 x16. It is in excellent condition.  This is a very peaceful and pleasing scene of a beautiful angel sitting at the bedside near a little girl playing soft music with her violin. This antique print is large in size and has lovely pastel colors incorporated throughout. Decorative molded wood frame with original gold-painted finish. Both the print and frame are in excellent original condition. Original glass and old wire hanger. Original label on back reading, "Adams Book Store, Northern N.Y.". Circa 1920’s.

This is an original vintage watercolor -- it is bright and exuberant.

Impressionism and naive, but has some hints of great talent; of course that is in the eye of the beholder.

I purchased this from a collector who had hundreds of original pieces from the 1930s forward. He thought that it was purchased in the 60s when he lived in New York.

SIZE:

12" x 18"

CONDITION:

Excellent - no damage, tears, or fading. Thick watercolor paper. Nothing on the reverse.

Guaranteed old & original.  Very vell done fine art vintage oil painting. The signature looks like S. Kams.., cannot really make out the rest; dated 1931. It also has the framing date on backside: Aug. 21, 1944 and a Hudson's Detroit foil framing label. Hudsons was the premier department store in Detroit, MI. It went out of biz many years ago. The frame is 15.25 wide x 20 tall. Oil on canvas. 10/11autgscs  Striking original oil painting of a breaking wave - "Wave" signed by J.D.Perrett. Oil on canvas. John Douglas Perrett (1859-1937) was born in Scotland and came to New Zealand in 1886. He exhibited and taught in Dunedin, New Zealand. The painting including frame, measures 58 cm high and 83 cm wide (22.3/4 inches by 32.5/8 inches). It has one repair mark in the cloud/sky - see photo 5. Otherwise very good original condition. The translucent green of the wave about to break is very well captured.  Nice Original Oil Painting on board . Estate sale purchase it belonged to her Mother and is from the 1960's according to Her. It looks like a canvas attached to board. It measures 5 by 7 inches the board it is on is actually wood, (not counting frame) clearly not modern It to me appears well done and I am pretty sure its a Margaret Keane. The eyes give it away. But I have seen this little girl in other Keane paintings. (with the blue dress) According to my source, the blue dress indicates that the painting was by Margaret and not her husband. Anyway its in great shape, no damage, framed measures 9 3/4 by 11 3/4 inches. Your welcome to make a offer on this, just contact us.

The light blue border on the matt also looks like it was done by Mr. Mapson. One is titled " Cable Car San Francisco " and the other is " Fishermans Wharf San Francisco ". Measurements (including frame) are 14" x 12". The watercolors measures 5 3/4" x 5". Both have an old sticker on the back from the Camera Shop in Santa Cruz - I'm assuming that's who did the framing. Both are in very good condition.

Some of the edges are tattered a bit. There are a few faint lines here and there that don't seem to belong. It will look fine framed behind glass.  A fine original pastel signed Chandler in the original gilt frame, missing some plaster decoration. An unusual vertical frame and format.

William Henry Chandler

The chalk used on Chandler pastels was imported from France in a variety of colors. A Chandler employee then blended

these imported colors into a wide variety of bright and pleasing pastel colors, adding a bonding liquid, and then molding

the chalks into easily-usable pastel sticks. The same employee prepped the various sized pastel boards before use,

preparing them with glue and sand so the final pastel colors would adhere better. After the picture was completed by the

artist, it would be sprayed with a fixative to help the chalk to adhere better, and then usually sent to be framed by

Frank.

Most Chandler pastels come in the form of landscapes. Although supposedly modeled after the rivers and mountains of

New York or New England, in my opinion many seem to be modeled after places much farther away. Most landscapes

feature some form of water such as a lake, stream, river, or waterfalls. Mountains were usually included, often with

another focal point such as a cabin, house, trees, mill, boats, cottages, etc. Flying birds or sailboats were often added in

the distance for visual effect.

Chandler’s most uncommon scenes include such topics as floral still lifes, fruit bowls, and hanging wild game such as

fish or rabbits. We have even seen a still life with a fish bowl on a table. Chandler ocean seascapes and foreign scenes

are also considered rare.

Chandler pastels were sold through art stores, art dealers, gift shops and department stores such as Marshall Fields,

Sears, Higbee’s and The May Company in the United States, and through Simpson’s, Eaton’s, and Hudson Bay in Canada.

Chandler prints were sold through the Taber-Prang print catalog and through various calendar and print publishers. Initial

sales contacts were made by Frank Chandler, other sales representatives, and often by Chandler himself.

As his reputation grew, Chandler exhibited his work at the 1900-01 International Exposition in Paris. His name appeared

on the membership list of the prestigious Century Association of New York, among other professional groups. A signed

Chandler pastel even hangs today in the Royal British Columbia Museum Parliament Buildings in Victoria, British Columbia,

Canada.

Between 1917-1918 Chandler spent a limited time in Canada producing his work. Apparently around that time Canada

had levied a 25% import tax on certain American goods which made it prohibitively expensive to import certain goods

from the U.S. into Canada. Some American businesses attempted to set up a Canadian subsidiary in order to avoid this

import tax (e.g., Wallace Nutting briefly set up a Canadian operation). However, Chandler’s Canadian operation was

short-lived and he returned to New York after only a few months.

TITLES: Most Chandler pastels seem to be untitled. Whereas Chandler prints would have been given a title by the publisher

to assist in sales & marketing, we have seen little evidence that most original Chandler pastels carried any specific title

when sold.

FRAME AND PASTEL SIZES: Pastel sizes were usually large format. Although we have seen a few in sizes as small as

8x12'' or smaller, most were in the 14x18'', 16x20'', 20x24'' size, or larger. And it was quite common to over-mat a

pastel thereby requiring an even larger frame. Quite often Chandler pastels were framed in large ornate frames, which

more often than not are damaged today.

SIGNED VS. UN-SIGNED CHANDLER PASTELS: In our opinion there are a significant number of ''Un-Signed'' original Chandler

pastels still in circulation. According to Peter Neeley, when Chandler pastels were produced in pairs, usually only one was

signed. And since most ''pairs'' have been broken up over the last 100 years, that would mean many original Chandlers

are un-signed today. And although Chandler himself most likely signed all of his own art, it would also be our opinion that a

fair number of original Chandler pastels completed by one of his employees may have left the studio un-signed.

Very lovely large Daffodil still life acrylic painting on canvas. It is very bright and happy. It is signed Penner on the right bottom corner. On the back there is sticker that identifies the artist as Waunita Penner. Then another card indicating that the painter is also the owner of the frame shop. The professional wood frame is 22 1/2" x 26 1/2". The wide part of the frame is wood with a fabric covering then the outer frame is painted wood. The painting is matted as well. The condition is good.  Lovely 20" x 16" oil painting on canvas. It is of a ocean seashore at sunrise. It shows seagulls and sea grasses with a lovely gentle pink/blue/yellow sky. You can see the sun reflection into the water as if it was breaking through the fog. The colors are lovely pinks, blue with some yellows, white and tans.

It is framed in a simple oak frame that is 21" x 18".

The condition is good but there is a smudge of something on the painting that goes from the gull down the the water. It almost seems like an appropriate place for a streak but I don't think this was the artist intention. I am sure that it could be cleaned up .  Lovely original textured oil painting that is framed in a lovely ornately carved wood frame. It is signed "LaRue" in the right hand corner as well as on the information on the back. The painting is 14" x 10". The frame is 17" x 21". <p> The title of of this painting on the back reads "Bouquet of Friendship". It was painted in El Toro. It says it was a painted gift and was presented by someone to someone else in 1974. The names mean nothing to me but the painting is excellent. The colors remind me of the fall with the browns, yellows and bit of orange. This color combination was typical of the earthy colors that were so popular in the 70's.  Charming Dutch Windmill Oil Painting of Zaanse Schans, Netherlands. --One of several hand-written notes by May Kugler on back:

" When I was a small child we were not allowed to get out of the yard. But when we would see people walking on the levee and the side walk, we would sneak out, and this is what we saw. The tent with the two tubs is where my mother would wash her clothes when the cistren would dry up. I'm in red in the boat and my cousin and a neighbor boy. My cousin took a fish out of the fish box and told my father the fish jumped up and she caught it."

Expertly done cowboy portrait by Federico. It is done is earthy Sepia tone pastels. I don't know who this cowboy is but he is a looker.

It is behind glass in wood frame that suits it well. The painting in the frame measures 13 7/8" x 16 3/4". The whole thing measures 16 1/2" x 19 1/4". The condition of the art is good. It needs to be re-framed. It does not sit flat in the frame so there is a buckling of the paper in two places. There there appears to be a wrinkle near that man's eye. There are small wrinkles throughout the hat oo. There is also a wrinkle on the outer right side next to the frame . The glass is cracked in the lower left corner. On both lower corners it looks like there is faint moisture damage. I picked it up years ago in the basement of an estate sale here in Seattle.  Floral Pastel Painting in a Round Wood Frame. It is behind glass. The painting is signed with what look like Harold Luhks. The diameter of the frame is 17 3/4".

I have not taken the picture out of the frame but it appears to be oil pastels on top of a painted surface. The maroon paint has texture whereas the the flowers do not.

It is beautifully done. The condition of the art is excellent. The milk white painted frame is good but there are a few nicks and smudges on it. However the flaws only add to the shabby chic appeal.  Original Oil Pastel Cave Painting -African Art. It is in a wood frame that measures 29"x 23".

I do not see a signature but it could be under the wood frame.

The condition is very good. The brown paper covering the back has several rips.  Unsigned oil painting on canvas of a topless female dancer. She looks to be either African or from the West Indies. It is quite exotic looking. The painting measures: 18 1/4" x 24 1/2" <p> The condition of the painting is excellent. It has a crude wooden frame that is probably meant to be temporary.
