This is a vintage circa 1920s black & white real photograph, hand signed by Anna Q. Nilsson.

This is a rare image of Nilsson and her signature is highly desired.

A pure 1920's jazz baby portrait, her face is beautifully haunting.

100% authentic signature in dark felt marker. "Sincerely Yours, Anna Q. Nilsson".

It has faded over the years but if you display it under some light, it will pop out more. You can also see from the ink splotches, that it is hand signed.

Much of the collection I am selling belonged to Tyrone Guthrie (who founded the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis). I purchased it from the person who got them directly from the Guthrie Theatre about 20 years ago. Guthrie acted & directed the Shakespeare Birthday Festival at the Old Vic Theatre in London with people like Michael Redgrave, Alec Guinness, Jessica Tandy, Harcourt Williams and Laurence Olivier. He amassed a huge amount of memorabilia, photos, playbills and signatures but some were sold off in the 80's and 90's.

SIZE:

7.5" x 9.5"

CONDITION:

Most of this photo is excellent. There is some slight waviness on the bottom (no damage) and a crinkle on the left side--it is starting to tear just a touch. Looking at it from an angle, it looks like the background. Heavyweight paper. I increased the contrast and brightness in the second image of the photo to make the signature stand out more.

Guaranteed old & original.

Anna Q. Nilsson was born in Ystad, Skåne County, Sweden in 1888. In 1905, she emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island. In the new country, the Swedish teenager started working as a nursemaid and learned English quickly. Soon she started working as a model. Already in 1907, she was named "Most beautiful woman in America". Penrhyn Stanlaws (1877-1957), one of the most successful and sought after cover artists of his day, picked Anna Q. Nilsson to become one of his models.

Nilsson's modeling led her to getting a role in the 1911 film Molly Pitcher. Films of special note for Anna were Seven Keys to Baldpate (1917), Soldiers of Fortune (1919), The Toll Gate and The Luck of the Irish (both 1920), and The Lotus Eater (1921). She stayed at the Kalem studio for several years, ranked behind their top star Alice Joyce. In the twenties she freelanced successfully for Paramount, First National and many other studios and reached a peak of popularity just before the advent of talkies, despite a serious horse-riding accident which kept her from filming for almost two years. In 1923, she portrayed "Cherry Malotte" in the second movie based upon Rex Beach's The Spoilers, a role that would be played in later versions by Betty Compson (1930), Marlene Dietrich (1942), and Anne Baxter (1955). In 1921 she returned to Sweden to record Värmlänningarna, her only Swedish movie. In 1926 she was named Hollywood's most popular woman.  This is a VINTAGE circa 1910 Reutlinger Paris photo postcard of well-known cabaret dancer (including the Folies-Bergere) and French courtesan Emilienne d’Alençon.

This beautiful card is hand tinted and lightly decorated with gold.

There is no writing on the back and it has not been posted. Undivided back.

CONDITION:

Excellent - almost mint with no damage--just a touch of handling wear. Colors are sharp with no fading.

Guaranteed old & original.  This is a vintage circa 1912 B&W real photograph of Walker Whiteside.

This beautiful & dramatically lit image is from the play 'The Typhoon' (1912) at The Metropolitan.

Confirmed by the writing on the reverse. It was also November 23rd.

Walker played an evil Japanese diplomat who kills his demanding Parisian mistress in a fit of passion, but his embassy hopes to get a substitute convicted so he can continue his secret mission. The silent film's date was in 1914 starring Sessue Hayakawa.

Walker Whiteside (1869-1942) was an American actor/producer who had played Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Shylock while still in his teens. His 1914 performance as Wu Li Chang in the play Mr. Wu was extremely popular. See bio underneath photo.

SIZE:

Approx. 8" x 10"

CONDITION:

Excellent in the main portion of the image. There is at the bottom & top, a thin crack forming and a dog-ear on extreme left corner. Hardly be visible once framed. Some side and corner wear. Heavy weight paper.

Guaranteed old & original.  This is a vintage circa 1900-1910 B&W real photograph of Geraldine Farrar.

This is a beautiful image of American opera star from the Metropolitan Opera (1906-1922) and one of the most famous opera singers of the early twentieth century. Her 1901 debut was at the Royal Opera House in Berlin, in the role of Marguerite in "Faust". She was summoned to films briefly by Cecil B. DeMille and starred in a few of his early pictures, among others. Once wed to silent screen actor Lou Tellegen, who later committed suicide. From 1906 to 1922 she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

On the back, her name is hand written and some shorthand directions on how to fit the photo in a publication.

Mishkin, NY is etched in the negative and her name is written in script at the bottom left.

James Valentine

James Valentine of Dundee and George Washington Wilson of Aberdeen were in competition with each other. Both were in Scotland and operated at the same time. Both companies sold their prints individually and mounted into albums.  This is a rare 1993 exhibition poster titled Capturing the Holy Land: M. J. Diness and the Beginnings of Photography in Jerusalem.

The first exhibition of the long-lost Diness collection was at the Harvard Semitic Museum in 1993, three years after John Barnier contacted the museum about his mysterious discovery (100 old glass plate negatives found at a Minnesota garage sale in 1988).

The photographs showed Jerusalem and its environs, and the year 1858 was scratched into the emulsion of some of them.

Diness's work marked the beginning of photography in Jerusalem. He was not only one of the very earliest photographers, but the first to be trained in Palestine itself. He was also the first resident photographer in Jerusalem, and the first to take stereoscopic views in Palestine. Diness was also the first person to make a visual travelogue of the Holy Land with his photographs of Galilee, Nazareth and Bethlehem.

That same year, part of the Diness collection was exhibited at the University of Portland, Oregon, as well as in Jordan.

How Diness's photographs ended up in a Minnesota garage sale and made it to exhibition is an interesting one--you can find the story on the Internet.

SIZE:

18" x 25"

CONDITION: Excellent with hardly any evidence of wear - only one tiny tear on right edge and pinholes in the extreme corners. Printed on thicker high quality paper. Has not been rolled or framed.

The 15" x 12" frame is good but the hanger piece on the back is missing. The is some handwriting on the mat. It is someone's name. I am not sure why someone would put a name on that mat that is not the artist. It says " Grandma Marie Josephine Chevrett".

Black & White Art Photography. It is an abstract titled "Systemic". The signature is a bit hard to decipher but I think it says "Marie A Bates". However I could by way off on that . Please look at the pictures I have provided. It is very well done. The contrasts and the swirls make for an interesting subject. I don't know for sure but it appears to be a cross section close up of a red cabbage. It goes to show that one does not have to travel far and wide to capture great photographs. It all about the artist eye.

It is in metal framed behind glass. The total measurement is 11" x 14". The condition of the photograph is excellent.

They are graduating ~ all wearing their graduation cap and gowns. Posing inside their school room, most sitting on chairs.

Maybe someone out there might know or be one of these children. Great keepsake piece or would be nice to adore a childs room or even in a school facility.

Large photograph measures 10 inches wide by x 8 inches high. Fine condition for it's age. Found this treasure underneath another picture we obtained.

On the back of the picture someone took the time in pencil to write down whom these little children are.

Thanks for visiting Dogwood Trail Antiques.  Unique little picture that appears to be adhered under glass.

Believe picture dates to approx. late 1800s ~ early 1900s for the only vehicle shown is a horse and wagon. Some type building, a train station, city hall, ??.. In the center town square is a statue, park benches surround, people strolling around, men in suits, derby hats, an Edwardian lady on the right dressed in a long gown pushing a baby carriage, vendors with their carts selling their wares.

Very interesting and detailed picture. The picture is an original old real photograph adhered on the back, was reverse painted in gold border surrounding the picture.

(We located this great find in a scrapbook, so has been stored away all these years.) GREAT CONDITION, slight wear of the gold on edges, on lower left corner gold is all worn. Overall great antique piece. This terrific photo captures early Victorian life.

Measures 4 inches wide by x 3 inches high.

Great period antique that would look great in a den, in an office, or a place to bring out its historical background. Or frame in a frame.
