Mary Louise Forbes, currently a resident of Fayette, was born just eight miles southeast of the community. She graduated from the Lawrence J. Daly School in Fayette in 1934 and then attended Central College (CMU), earning her bachelor's degree in English, with a minor in math, in 1939. After graduation, she taught in north Howard County at the one-room Bawker School and later became principal at Cairo, Mo.

During World War II she worked at Weldon Springs at the TNT plant, where she met her husband, Ted Forbes. After the war she taught in the Joliet, Ill., school system. She was in her 50s when she began painting, studying under Erwin Hobby and developing her talents as a landscape artist.

The Forbeses retired to Fayette in 1988 and Mary Louise Forbes became part of the Boonslick Area Art League. Following a period in which she refrained from painting because of health problems, she began painting again two years ago under the direction of Fayette artist Tom Yancey, a retired CMU professor of music and art. In that time, Forbes has completed more than 20 paintings.

Many of Forbes' paintings have been brought together for the first time for presentation in The Ashby-Hodge Gallery exhibition. It will be her first art show in a life that has spanned nine decades.

Insurance of $2.35 and a 3.00 packing material will be added to the shipping cost.

*Adams' term as Vice President is sometimes listed as starting on either March 4 or April 6. March 4 is the official start of the first vice presidential term. April 6 is the date on which Congress counted the electoral votes and certified a Vice President. April 21 is the date on which Adams began presiding over the Senate.

John Adams (October 30, 1735 – July 4, 1826) was an American lawyer, statesman, diplomat and political theorist. A leading champion of independence in 1776, he was the second President of the United States (1797–1801). Hailing from New England, Adams, a prominent lawyer and public figure in Boston, was highly educated and represented Enlightenment values promoting republicanism. A Federalist, he was highly influential and one of the key Founding Fathers of the United States.

Adams came to prominence in the early stages of the American Revolution. As a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, he played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence. He assigned Thomas Jefferson the role of drafting the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776,[1] and assisted him in that process. As a representative of Congress in Europe, he was a major negotiator of the eventual peace treaty with Great Britain, and chiefly responsible for obtaining important loans from Amsterdam bankers. A political theorist and historian, Adams largely wrote the Massachusetts state constitution in 1780 which soon after ended slavery in Massachusetts,[2] but was in Europe when the federal Constitution was drafted on similar principles later in the decade. One of his greatest roles was as a judge of character: in 1775, he nominated George Washington to be commander-in-chief, and 25 years later nominated John Marshall to be Chief Justice of the United States.

Adams' revolutionary credentials secured him two terms as George Washington's vice president and his own election in 1796 as the second president. During his one term, he encountered ferocious attacks by the Jeffersonian Republicans, as well as the dominant faction in his own Federalist Party led by his bitter enemy Alexander Hamilton. Adams signed the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts, and built up the army and navy especially in the face of an undeclared naval war (called the "Quasi War") with France, 1798–1800. The major accomplishment of his presidency was his peaceful resolution of the conflict in the face of Hamilton's opposition.

In 1800 Adams was defeated for re-election by Thomas Jefferson, therefor becoming the first president to serve for only one term. He retired to Massachusetts. He later resumed his friendship with Jefferson. He and his wife, Abigail Adams, founded an accomplished family line of politicians, diplomats, and historians now referred to as the Adams political family. Adams was the father of John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States. His achievements have received greater recognition in modern times, though his contributions were not initially as celebrated as those of other Founders.  George Washington - 1st (First) President of the United States of America.

Biography by: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

George Washington (February 22, 1732 [O.S. February 11, 1731] – December 14, 1799) was the dominant military and political leader of the new United States of America from 1775 to 1799. He led the American victory over Great Britain in the American Revolutionary War as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army from 1775 to 1783, and presided over the writing of the Constitution in 1787. The unanimous choice to serve as the first President of the United States (1789–1797), Washington presided over the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that stayed neutral in the wars raging in Europe, suppressed rebellion and won acceptance among Americans of all types. His leadership style established many forms and rituals of government that have been used ever since, such as using a cabinet system and delivering an inaugural address. Washington is universally regarded as the "Father of his Country".

Washington was born into the provincial gentry of a wealthy, well connected Colonial Virginia family who owned tobacco plantations. After his father and older brother both died young, Washington became personally and professionally attached to the powerful Fairfax family, who promoted his career as a surveyor and soldier. Washington quickly became a senior officer of the colonial forces during the first stages of the French and Indian War. Chosen by the Second Continental Congress in 1775 to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, he managed to force the British out of Boston in 1776, but was defeated and nearly captured later that year when he lost New York City. After crossing the Delaware River in the dead of winter, he defeated the enemy in two battles, retook New Jersey, and restored momentum to the Patriot cause. Because of his strategy, Revolutionary forces captured two major British armies at Saratoga in 1777 and Yorktown in 1781. Historians give Washington high marks for: his selection and supervision of his generals; his encouragement of morale and ability to hold together the army; his coordination with the state governors and state militia units; his relations with Congress; and, his attention to supplies, logistics, and training. In battle, however, Washington was repeatedly outmaneuvered by British generals with larger armies. After victory had been finalized in 1783, Washington resigned rather than seize power, proving his opposition to dictatorship and his commitment to the emerging American political ideology of republicanism. He returned to his home, Mount Vernon, and his domestic life there, continuing to manage a variety of enterprises. Washington's final 1799 will specified all his slaves be set free.

Dissatisfied with the weaknesses of Articles of Confederation, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention that drafted the United States Constitution in 1787. Elected as the first President of the United States in 1789, he attempted to bring rival factions together to unify the nation. He supported Alexander Hamilton's programs to pay off all state and national debt, to implement an effective tax system and to create a national bank (despite opposition from Thomas Jefferson). Washington proclaimed the U.S. neutral in the wars raging in Europe after 1793. He avoided war with Great Britain and guaranteed a decade of peace and profitable trade by securing the Jay Treaty in 1795, despite intense opposition from the Jeffersonians. Although never officially joining the Federalist Party, he supported its programs. Washington's "Farewell Address" was an influential primer on republican virtue and a stern warning against partisanship, sectionalism, and involvement in foreign wars.

Washington had a vision of a great and powerful nation that would be built on republican lines using federal power. He sought to use the national government to preserve liberty, improve infrastructure, open the western lands, promote commerce, found a permanent capital, reduce regional tensions and promote a spirit of American nationalism.[1] At his death, Washington was hailed as "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen".[2] The Federalists made him the symbol of their party but for many years the Jeffersonians continued to distrust his influence and delayed building the Washington Monument. As the leader of the first successful revolution against a colonial empire in world history, Washington became an international icon for liberation and nationalism, especially in France and Latin America.[3] He is consistently ranked among the top three presidents of the United States according to polls of both scholars and the general public.

It looks great when matted and framed and would make a very unique gift.  Delicate, authentic watercolor from app. 1940 by the Viennese painter Hans Suessenbeck. It is an original graphic, pencil and water colour.

It depicts a couple, the young lady in transparent negliche.

Size: 10 x 14,2 inches, fine condition.

Johann Suessenbeck, academic painter and graphic designer ( 1906 – 2000 ), was a rewarded Austrian States award, M. Neuber award and Meisterschul-award.  Edwin Megargee Original Vintage Lithograph Print depicting ~ BELGIAN AND SHIRE.

The Belgian is the largest of the draft horses except for the Shire. Stallions weighing more than a ton are not uncommon, and the height may be 16 to 17 hands. Some horsemen criticize the Belgian for being coarse in structure and phlegmatic in disposition. It is neigher the quality of the Clydesdale nor the beauty of the Percheron, but it has a quiet disposition and handles easily. In America it is second in popularity only to the Percheron.

At the lower right is the Shire, the giant of them all. The * feather * or long hair that you will notice on the legs above the fetlocks, gives it an attractive shagginess but is a disadvantage to the animal because in cold, wet weather this hair becomes matted with ice and mud and requires a great deal of extra grooming. Both horses shown here are pictured as they are fitted for the show ring. With rosettes braided into their manes and tails, and with coats shining and hooves polished, they make an impressive sight.

We have obtained many works of art illustrations by the artist: EDWIN MEGARGEE. Artwork SIGNED on the lithograph print. These date 1946 from his collection titled: HORSES.

Edwin Megargee Original Vintage Lithograph Print depicting ~ THE COW PONY.

This lithograph shows a lonely cowboy checking over a herd of cattle. His only companion was his pony. These tough, little horses, which could be taught to do almost everything except talk, ranged in color from black to paint or calico, and palamino. The paints were favorites, both in reality and legend.

The pony which is wearing a typical, high pommeled, roping saddle, is not as beautiful as an Arab or a Thoroughbred but he is practical and competent.

**WE REVIEW ANY REASONABLE OFFERS ON ALL OUR ITEMS.!!**  Edwin Megargee Original Vintage Lithograph Print depicting ~ THE HACKNEY.

The high-stepping Hackney which, in show parlance, is known as the heavy harness horse, has been extremely popular in both this country and England, and is still an impressive sight at the larger horse shows. Its extremely high knee and hock action is developed by exercising in knee deep straw and is accentuated by weighting the shoes. Hackneys are always shown in harness, frequently hitched to a gig or a dog cart. This cobby, compactly made horse is the most extreme development of show ring type and stands between 15 and 16 hands high. the Hackney most commonly seen today, however, is the Hackney pony, a beautiful miniature of 14-1/2 hands or less.

**WE REVIEW ANY REASONABLE OFFERS ON ALL OUR ITEMS.!!**  Edwin Megargee Original Vintage Lithograph Print depicting ~ THOROUGHBRED BREEDING.

The breeding farm is a fascinating place to both sportsman and artist. Fillies to be used as brood mares are usually retired to the stud at the end of their two or three year old form, and colts which have developed sufficient reputation on the racecourse to be used as stallions are retired at the end of their racing careers which usually means at the end of their third or fourth year. Mares are turned out daily in pasture during their eleven months of gestation. Foals are usually weaned when they are five or six months old. Training begins shortly after their first month. In the beginning this means little more than affectionate handling to familiarize them with human beings, but very early they are accustomed to the halter. Breaking to bridle and saddle comes much later, by which time the temper and responsiveness of the horse have been largely determined.

The beauty and grace of the Arab are clearly discernible in the Thoroughbred race horse of today, and the descendants of the Arabian or Godolphin Barb and his confreres never will be found pulling a cart through city streets. No harness touches the back of a race horse. He is royally bred, reared and trained on a farm, attended by a cortege of trainers, exercise boys, grooms and jockeys.

Phil Ponder Print Front Street First Av $300.00

Le Panier De Pommes hand colored Louis $287.00

A long time favorite of mine, this great old hand colored print by Louis Icart is a perfect example of the artist's skill in capturing not only the beauty of every woman who modeled for him, but Icart found a way to also catch the perfect emotion to bring the image to life. 17 x 14 in a very old frame, this classic print has a few areas that have darkened due to age and perhaps a little dampness, but nothing that can steal any of the beauty displayed in this mischievous young girl or the fine work of art.   Here is a really thought provoking and timeless image by the artist Stefanie Elizabeth Thiel Rybitski. The print measures 11 x 14 and was bought around 2000, but never opened, so in fact it is new. It is also a very limited edition print. This is 1 of only 5 that are hand signed by Ms. Rybitski. Season's End would make a wonderful gift for someone special.  Here is another wonderful vintage limited edition print by the New York Graphic Society. This lovely piece is titled, The Shell Heap, by Winslow Homer. Still in the original frame, this fine old print of the original Homer watercolor is a perfect match to another of our offered vintage prints with a nautical theme. Please take a moment to see the print, White Ships. You qualify for a 20% discount if you buy both pieces.

The print has numerous markings in pencil in the margins. The work is a tropical scene of a rowboat and a fisherman locked in a struggle with what seems a rather large fish. Palm trees, sand, surf and water all add up to a lovely and very peaceful antique art print.  Here is a wonderful old limited framed print copyrighted by the New York Graphic Society. The print is from an original watercolor by late artist John Singer Sargent and is titled, White Ships. This beautiful vintage print comes in the original professional frame, which measures 23 by 17 inches. White ships is a wonderful portrait of sailboats in close quarters, racing the wind as well as each other. If you love sailing and want something with a gorgeous nautical theme, here is a wonderful old piece of vintage art. Oh yes, please take a moment to view the mate to this lovely print. It is called The Shell Heap by Winslow Homer and if you buy both works, you will receive a 20% discount off your total.

Picker's is proud to offer this rare, Limited Edition Serigraph, hand signed, numbered and dated 1981 by the late Lowell (Blair) Nesbitt. Titled "Irises" and signed by the artist in pencil, this print is number 121 of 200.

This large serigraph is in beautiful condition, kept safe through the years by the museum quality of it's frame and mounting system.

The print itself measures approx. 30 x 39 inches and is set within a lovely frame of marbled green. The frame measures 33 x 43 inches and the color offers the perfect compliment to Nesbitt's gorgeous print.

As you can see in the pictures we've supplied, the artist has hand signed, dated and numbered this serigraph in pencil. The lower left corner shows 121/200 and on the lower right it is signed - L. Nesbitt 1981.

In the next few weeks Picker's will be listing a great many more wonderful works of art, so check back in from time to time.  This is an original Pascal Cucaro. There will be no more since the artist passed away in Jan. 2004.

Cucaro was popular in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1960's. He was a prolific artist and used a variety of mediums. Is well known for his clowns, people, and street scenes.

I do not know the name of this particular piece. It was purchased at an estate sale. The previous owner worked for the artist years ago and then became avid collectors. This is one of 9 that were in the estate.

This piece measures 4 ft 3 inches by 22 1/2. There is a small amount of wear to the frame. Stretched canvas. The subject is a portrait of a child with a booked silver leaf background. There may be a small flawed area. We are not sure but have photographed it.

This work of art will be professionally packed, insured and shipped by UPS. Shipping is free in the continental US.  I must admit that this lithograph has me stumped. I have found numerous of Jean Paul Selinger's other works, but not like this. The top right corner is marked Copyright 1899 by Jean Paul Selinger. The bottom left corner has a fancy raised seal or watermark that contains a large letter B along with some smaller letters or words I have not been able to identify. The right bottom corner also has a raised seal that appears to repeat at least part of the copyright information from above. I am sure there are ways to reveal these markings, but I will leave that job to someone much more qualified than I am. The picture is mounted in what has been described to me as a floating mount, which was common in the late 1800's and involves the etching, which measures 10 by 13 inches, being glued to a contrasting border, which is about a half inch larger than the etching. Then this piece is set over a flat gray/brown background and framed with a simple wooden frame of a slightly darker color. The backing paper, black in color, is old and very fragile and where it is torn loose one can see that thin sheets of rough sawn wood hold everything together. There is a partial nametag on the back which I am certain says, - Tilden Thurber Co. Art Gallery Providence, R.I. - This lovely old piece has some marks and stains and spots, but none have enough power to take anything away from this wonderful image of a young woman clearly in love. I believe the reason I have not found another like this anywhere may have to do with the simplest of reasons. No one who has a copy has any desire to part with it. JM  In 1946 Richard E Filipowski created this outstanding blue and black oval toned design with radiating beams with pencil. Presented on art board, it is signed Filipowski 46 in the lower right corner. It is in Fine condition with mild discoloration around the outer edges and slight damage at the extreme top corner (see photos). This work measures 15" x 19" and is suitable for framing.

Richard Filipowski (1923-2008), American Artist - Studied at the School of Design in Chicago from 1942-1946. He was trained by Chicago Bauhaus founder and teacher Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, In 1946 he joined the faculty of the Chicago Institue of Design. From 1950-1952 Mr. Filipowski taught under Walter Gropius at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In 1952 he was hired by the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) where he would remain until his retirement in 1989.

Provenance: Purchased from the estate of former Chicago School of Design classmate, artist and illustrator Stanley Kazdailis. Robert E. Filipowski and Stanley Kazdailis studied under Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and are credited in the film Do Not Disturb, 1945.
