Although made later by other companies, I know that these were purchased in the 1950-60’s by my mother and they are the same shape as shown in the Felt/Stoer book for that period. Fostoria American # 2056 is a very popular design with many shapes and forms. Candlesticks measure 4 1/2 inches wide at the base, and are in MINT condition; there is no damage, no chips, cracks, etc. These glow a light green under UV light. Any odd colors are reflections from nearby articles; glass is very clear. Buyer to pay for shipping by USPS Priority, with free Delivery Confirmation, 3 lbs. from 06068. #532

It dates around 1920, and the larger tiles in this series are very hard to find. This measures 6 5/8" in diameter and is just over 1/2" thick. The tile design is pierced. The glaze is a speckled / mottled blue, with the buff color clay coming though to enhance it. There is a firing crack through the left leg of the winged horse – as is common with many of the older and larger Mercer tiles. Generally this is in very nice condition. This would be an amazing gift for that astronomer in your life! (#T-2104)

Keywords: art tiles ceramic pottery vintage antique  This is one of the harder to find series of tiles made by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. It dates from circa 1920 – and is titled Spanish Dolphin. This is an unusually thick tile, measuring almost 1 1/4" at its highest point. It is relief molded and depicts a stylized dolphin. Done in red clay (not glazed) with a majolica blue glaze in the recesses and on the sides. The tile is handmade and measures about 3 1/2" square. In overall nice condition. There are two kiln pulls on the left side. Henry Mercer, the found of the tile works, created the consummate Arts & Crafts Movement tiles – and this one is a beauty! (#1824)

Keywords: art tiles ceramic pottery vintage antique  This tile was made by Henry Mercer of the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The design is referred to as the Carlyle Candle. It is one of the harder to find early and larger tiles made by Mercer. Basically the size of his stove plate tiles. It measures 7" x 5 3/4". It runs from 3/4" thick to just over 1/2" thick. Probably dates around circa 1920. Wear to glaze on flame – wear to bottom and edges of the candleholder, 2 kilns pulls on right edge. Hairline on right side. Look at the area just below the hairline – see that surface just along the self framing edge – not sure what that is. I did wonder if that might have been a restoration – but I did not want to touch it. Could just be something on the tile surface also –I just don’t know. There’s nothing along the side edge that indicates there was a restoration – the colors and finish all look seamless – nothing on the back either that leads me to that conclusion. A nice example from a fabulous pottery.(#T1400-B)

Keywords: antique tiles vintage handmade collectible ceramic pottery  I’ve always called this Mascotte, made by Ripley & Co., ca 1874, USG 1891. Apparently it is also called Dakota, one of the USG states patterns, also made by Ripley. It has a bulbous center with thumbprint designs around the lid and base, and the Mascotte squares around the neck. The inner lid is manufacturer ground. There are 2 flakes of about ½ inch on the top sharp edge of the lid, not very obvious at display distance (see close-ups of both). Only light scratches, but no graying of the glass. Appears to have been made with a wafer, since mold lines do not line-up between the bowl and the base. Very cute and unusual small size, measuring only 9 ½ inches to the top of the lid and 4 inches across the base. This has been in my family for more than 50 years, having been rescued from an old house.

Made by Franklin Pottery, Lansdale, PA, circa 1925. This commemorative tile measures 2 3/4" square. Semi matte blue glaze in the recesses, dark gray brownish color body. This shows a silhouette of Benjamin Franklin, with his walking stick, and the initials "FP" for Franklin Pottery. Marked on the back. This is in nice condition – minor scuffing of the clay on his leg and walking stick. (#T1150-C)

Key words: historical commemorative Ben Franklin advertising  This is a very well made and executed tile. The design shows a woman bending over a washing tub, doing laundry. You can see the clothes hanging on the line behind her. Hand made - this measures 6" square and is 1/2" thick. Done in a blue green majolica glaze with lovely molded details. This is hand incised with an "H" on the back. Although definite age and maker are unknown, this could certainly be the work of Pewabic Pottery or one of the other major Arts & Crafts Movement pottery/tile companies. It is that well done. In excellent condition. (Inv.#1972)

The glaze on this tile is awesome - a burnt orangey-red going into a lava black. Reminds me of the chrome red glazes of southern folk pottery. Measures just over 4 1/4" square.  This piece was geared more towards the insulator side of the business. If you look at the ribs on the outside edge they do remind you of insulators. This unusual Rookwood faience tile is hand painted underglaze. The back is impressed with the backwards "RP" and the number "467". This was indeed part of a series, as I have had another tile done by the same hand, with a similar motif. I believe the artist to have been W. K. Hentschel. Well executed design of a man and woman with grapes and grape leaves. The colors are a bright blue green, dark blue, pale blue, brown, and burgundy in her hair. The clay body is a dark gray color. There are small chips to 3 corners, which can be quite nicely concealed when framed. In very nice condition. (#2016)

Fabulous tile made by Richard E. Bishop, depicting a bird in flight, on a light turquoise background. Raised line technique, combination of matte and semi matte glazes. I do not know what type of bird this is - it has a white face, neck and breast, and its underbelly and wings are a dark blue gray - white and black are also on the wings - burgundy red feet. Measures 6" square by 5/8" thick. Signed Richard E. Bishop, with a copyright symbol, on the back. In excellent condition. (#1860)
