This gorgeous Art Nouveau candle holder is actually a two piece chamberstick, in that it has a "carrying" handle. It is made of low gloss pewter, and was made by the German firm of J.P. Kayser & Sohn, who marketed their wares under the name of Kayserzinn. This measures 10" long by 6 1/2" wide. There are half sunflower designs on the edges and flowing designs on the base and stem. The separate stick holder has flowers. Marked on the bottom with the makers make and the design number 4384. There is also an impressed 44 under the oval mark. This certainly has same age wear, but it retains its original patina. Circa 1910. It's both a practical and beautiful candlestick. (#T1150-G)

Dodge Biography:

Born on February 6, 1895 in Washington, D.C., William Waldo Dodge, Jr. grew up during the pop of the Arts and Crafts style in America. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy where courses in manual arts were becoming mandatory. Dodge broke away from his family history of patent attorneys and enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the school of architecture. Shortly before graduation, Dodge, along with crowds of other college students, were enlisting for World War I. Returning home in 1919, he spent the next four years in military hospitals and tuberculosis sanatoriums. During his recovery, Dodge began his journey into silversmithing, learning the basics from the woman who would become his wife in 1921, Margaret Wheeler Robinson. The couple settled in Asheville in 1923. At this time, with his own silver shop, there was no clear evidence that Dodge was planning on pursuing his architectural career. However, it didn't take long. Dodge began designing residential homes in 1924 and later French style shops. His style included English Tudor, French Norman, and French country cottage. In 1940, Dodge and five other Asheville architects and engineers (Henry Irven Gaines, Anthony Lord, W. Stewart Rogers, Erle G. Stillwell, and Charles E. Waddell) pulled together and became known as the Six Associates. Dodge eventually chose to leave Six Associates and began his private practice, consisting mostly of renovations and additions. After he began experiencing medical difficulties, the Dodges sold their home and retired to their farm. It was here that William Waldo Dodge, Jr. died on February 21, 1971.

North Carolina Museum of History exhibition quote;

Crafted from Silver features the work of 20th-century Asheville silversmith William Waldo Dodge Jr., who began his professional life as an architect, but shifted his career focus after he was wounded during World War I. While recovering from his injuries, he began to work with silver and eventually opened his own studio in 1924. A tea service created by Dodge reflects the Arts and Crafts movement popular at the time.

 Clean-lined Contemporary Pink Enamel Over Copper Small Bowl or Dish in a deep rosy pink with pale pink and white foam border and dark veining effects throughout. The underside is a pale frothy, sponge-like blue/white. It measures 7 1/2'' in diameter and 1 1/4'' tall and is signed. Unfortunately, I could not locate any information on the artist. Depending on the way the bowl is turned it may read hyKes or BDhy? There is a small flake on the underside rim where you can see a glimmer of copper and several pinpoint sized specks where the color is missing--not visible from the top--probably normal wear if not original to the piece.

pair of matching signed Roycroft bookends, hammered copper with rose design. 6inch wd X 8 1/2inch ht X 3 1/2inch dp. good patina  Offering this handsome Arts and Crafts era double copper inkwell with large tray area in front, made of hammered copper and riveted together very securely. Sleek styled domed inkwells with the letter "S" engraved on each lid. Both glass wells are present and secure. There are two hinged doors on bottom that close with a latch where you access the glass wells. The finish on the top is clean with a protective lacqure coating. It is possible this is the original finish and hardly ever used or possibly could have been cleaned and a protective lacquer finish applied to prevent future tarnishing; the underside is a darker patina. Measures 10 inches x 7 inches x 3 inches tall, weighs 3.75 pounds, fine condition, no cracks or dents. The glass inkwells are marked Kenney Bros & Wolkins, Boston Mass. Upon researching - Henry Wolkins sold office equipment to many schools in the Boston area in the late 1800's including Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. His father, FLH Wolkins came to the USA from Bremerhaven, Germany in 1855. He was a fresco artist and calligrapher whose works can be seen throughout the city and has been exibited in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1902 Henry Wolkins merged his company with a furniture company named Kenney Brothers. That would date this inkwell to the early 1900's during the Arts and Crafts movement - maker of the copper inkwell is unknown. Also since Henry's father was a calligrapher, it could be that he is the one who engraved the "S" on the lids of the inkwells. A very handsome piece of craftsmanship and history that would compliment any desk!  This highly decorated pewter plate has beetles, bees, a beehive, flowers, a dragonfly, and vines and leaves. Measures 10" at its widest, sits 7/8" high - shallow bowl. Pressed Kayserzinn mark with design number #4094. Wonderful and well designed describes this open salt done in pewter, by Nekrassoff. The openwork and flower handle on the piece give it great character. The sides and bottom are hand hammered. The salt dish measures 2 1/4" to the handle end, and is 5/8" high. The accompanying salt spoon has a curved end, typical of Nekrassoff's work, although not marked. There is discoloration to the spoon and inside of the salt, as well as some pitting on the bottom, probably due to actual salt being used. The spoon measures 1 3/4" long. Made around 1930, perhaps a bit earlier, these are nice examples from his workshops. This is one of a pair of these we have for sale. (#T-1626)
