Retta thinks she has everything under control until Johnny takes up with a dubious friend, which distracts Retta from caring for Roy. Can Retta handle the pressure of being responsible for her entire family?

The Remakable Life, Adventures and Discoveries of Sebastian Cabot of Bristol, The Founder of Great Britain's Maritime Power, Discoverer of America and its First Colonizer By J.F. Nicholls was published in 1869 by Sampson Low, Son and Marston, London. It measures 6" x 8" x 3/4" and is in excellent condition. Featured inside the leaf is an original lithograph of Sebastian Cabot engraved by S. Rawle, from the original in the possession of Charles Jos. Harford, Esquire. Creme colored pages are crisp and clean. Binding is tight. There is a split inside the cover (pictured below). There is moderate shelf wear and the corners are bumped. Additional pictures upon request. The book has red leather boards with gold guilt. This very interesting book suggests that Cabot was the true discoverer of America. Pretty radical idea for the mid 19th Century. Overall a very unique rare book.  Pair of early Telephone Books. Resemble somewhat of a Catalog but not quite. The Black one is entitled "The Rural Telephone" and was issued by the North Electric Co., Cleveland, Ohio. Total of 29 pages encompassing all you need to know abou the early Telephone and it's history. Photos and diagrams throughout. Measures about 7 5/8 x 9" Overall very good condition. A couple of the pages were neatly taped along the inner edge. The Red Book issued by the Sterling Electric Co., LaFayette, Ind. is focused on Switchboards. Total of 15 pages with literature as well as photos throughout. Measures about 5 1/2 x 9" Some tattering along the outside edges and some red marking to the inside cover page as shown in the photo. I'm guessing Books are from the very early 1900's era. If you collect early Telephone items would make a nice addition to your collection. Buyer to pay $4.50 for shipping & insurance within the U.S.  Offered is a very nice Early Catalog from the Sterling Electric Co. solely on Telephones & Equipment made by the Company. Measures roughly 9 3/4 x 7" and has 63 pages. Photos of various Phones with descriptions of them on the left side. Catalog is from the very early 1900's. End of Catalog has testomonials from their customers and Telephone Code Numbers. Would make a wonderful addition to your Vintage Telephone collection. Buyer to pay shipping & insurance via USPS Media Mail.  This 1886 edition of The Printers International Specimen Exchange Volume VII contains some of the most beautiful and prolific works of art produced in 1885. This edition is Extremely Rare, complete, and in good condition. The binding remains very tight, there is significant dirt on the cover as well as bent corners, signs of moisture damage are present, and the page ends show discoloration and some roughness. Inside the quality and integrity of the prints remains extremely fine. This volume measures approximately 9 ¾" x 12" and the minimum requirement for artwork inclusion is 11 ¼" x 8 ¾" . Each was produced on high quality paper or card stock. Featured within are amazing examples of high quality advertising, calendars, prints and letterheads from around the world. All are original specimens and were assembled by the Printers’ International Specimen Exchange with a total of less than 400 copies produced (many left unbound as there was a separate charge of 6s. per volume). Having been produced in London by Field & Tuer, the "Leadenhall Press," E.C. The first book was presented to and accepted by The Queen of England as noted in the preface "Contributors to the International Printers’ Specimen Exchange will no doubt be gratified to learn that their productions have come directly under the notice of the Queen, Her Majesty having been graciously pleased to accept and acknowledge a copy of the latest volume."

The introduction to this edition was written by the Editor of The Paper And Printing Trades Journal, which includes the following excerpts.

"The suggestion made a year ago that contributors should signalize the production of the seventh series by making a collective effort to place it on a higher level of excellence than heretofore, has borne good fruit. The current volume, both artistically and technically, is distinctly worthy of the occasion, and has indeed exceeded our most sanguine expectations. Not only has the quality of work improved, but the number of subscribers has also largely increased…" "With very few exceptions good taste in design and colour, and workmanlike perfection in execution prevail throughout."

"Of the specimens contained in the seventh volume 210 are English, 36 come from Scotland, nine from Ireland, and six from Wales; Germany sends 51, Switzerland eight, Austria eight, Italy, France, and Denmark two each; Hungary, Holland, Belgium and Norway one each; south Africa contributes one and the united states 12. "

"The specimens from the United States are fewer than usual, but though few they stand out with their accustomed originality of design and mastery of execution."

"The volumes are, if desired, uniformly and artistically bound in half-vellum laced with catgut, and lettered back and side (old style) in gold"

Due to the limited number of pictures we have chosen a basic sampling. Each edition has hundreds of beautiful Lithographs and the process has been very difficult. Additional pictures and descriptions are available upon request. Please be specific in your requests. This edition of The Printers’ International Specimen Exchange is original and very unique. We have not seen any others from this period available to the public. Of the handful of editions known, many reside in private institutions that received them as a part of donated collections and papers. This 1890 edition of The Printers International Specimen Exchange Volume XI contains some of the most beautiful and prolific works of art produced in 1889. This edition is Extremely Rare, complete, and in very good condition. The binding remains very tight, there is noticeable wear on the leather cover and edges as well as bent corners, and the page ends show discoloration and some roughness. Inside the quality and integrity of the prints remains extremely fine. This volume measures approximately 9 ¾" x 12" and the minimum requirement for artwork inclusion is 11 ¼" x 8 ¾" . Having been produced in London by the Office of "The British Printer," 25 Pilgrim Street, Ludgate Hill, E.C., 1890. Bound by Raithby, Lawrence & Co. Ltd. Leicester. Inside the front cover there is a sticker that reads, " Presented to the St. Bride Foundation Library by Albert Charles James (member of The Institute of Printers) Broad Quay, Bristol, November 1918."

The introduction to this edition was written by the Editor of "The British Printer", which includes the following excerpts.

"The present volume marks a new era in the history of the Printers’ International Specimen Exchange. Since the last volume was issued three American Exchanges have ceased to exist, the French Exchange is reduced simply to a competition between half a dozen of the best workmen of the republic; but the German Exchange, which made a capital beginning, advances with the strength that was expected from such a nation of fine printers."

" The call for improvement in quality made in our announcement one year ago, has been well responded to, and the result is a collection – we are speaking now of the work of British printers only – which is highly credible as shewing that they are doing artistic work equal to any produced in any part of the world, and as bearing ample evidence of the growth of a distinct style of typographic design and display that is neither American or German, but embraces the best points of both – the freshness and originality of the first and the chaste colouring, and correct taste of the latter."

"To secure this improvement in quality rejections have been more numerous than usual."

"Members can have their volumes uniformly bound in a special binding, and lettered in gold,"

This 1889 edition of The Printers International Specimen Exchange Volume X contains some of the most beautiful and prolific works of art produced in 1888. All are original specimens and were assembled by the Printers’ International Specimen Exchange with a total of Approximately 400 copies produced (many left unbound as there was a separate charge of 6/6 per volume). Having been produced in London the actual location is unknown.

The introduction to this edition includes the following excerpts.

"Amongst the new subscribers, Spain puts in an appearance with five excellent specimens, France and Russia have increased to three each, while New Zealand and Ceylon are represented for the first time. America and Australia remain stationary.

There are in the tenth volume 406 specimens, 72 from abroad and 334 contributed by the craft in the United Kingdom. Scotland is waking up and comes to the front with 35 contributions, nearly all of a very high order of merit. We hope to see this improvement continue. The Emerald Isle contributes five, and the ‘gallant little Wales’ four, England being responsible for the big majority of 290."

" As regards style and execution, Germany and America still lead the way,"

"In a word, the current volume shews more fully than any of its predecessors that paying printing – the best effect with the least labour – is being studied much more than formerly in connexion with fine work."

"Members can have their volumes uniformly and artistically bound in half-vellum laced with catgut, and lettered in gold, at a charge of 6/6 per volume."

This 1893 edition of The Printers International Specimen Exchange Volume XIV contains some of the most beautiful and prolific works of art produced in 1892. This edition is Extremely Rare, complete, and in very good condition. The binding remains very tight, there is some wear on the leather cover and edges as well as bent corners, and the page ends show discoloration and some roughness. The Office of "The British Printer," 1 Imperial Buildings, Ludgate Circus, E.C., produced this volume in London 1893. Inside the front cover there was a sticker that was removed and tore through the cover board top paper.

The Editor of "The British Printer", which includes the following excerpts, wrote the introduction to this edition.

"Having cleared up this little matter, we now come to the volume before us – that for 1893, and the fourteenth in the series. In the first place we note that the quality of the specimens, both as to design and colour, as well as perfection of workmanship, is thoroughly well up to the standard of the day, and it will be somewhat difficult for even the most critical to find half-a-dozen that could be objected to on account of indifferent execution."

" The last volume was an exceptionally good one in every way; the one before us is, in some respects, even better, though in some ways it does not come up to what we expected and asked for in the introduction to the last volume. For one reason, the great depression of trade during the last year has placed either on short time or wholly unemployed, many journeymen who had been in the habit of contributing, and this has made a difference of seventy or eighty contributors to this series."

"Members can have their volumes uniformly bound in a special binding, and lettered in gold,"

The Editor of "The British Printer", which includes the following excerpts, wrote the introduction to this edition.

"Any misgivings that may have been entertained as to the future prospects of The Printers’ International Specimen Exchange are effectually set at rest by the number and quality of the contents of the Ninth Volume, now completed."

" The majority of British Printers are rapidly adopting the fresh and striking American ideas of design and display, with enough of the more formal but undeniably correct and artistic German element to constitute a style of their own, with distinct leaning towards the former in its quieter and less elaborate aspects. Our transatlantic cousins have noticed this,"

Whitman Publishing Tell A Tale book in fair condition.  Seal Wars! An American Viewpoint by Janice Henke contains one of the most brutally honest factual explanations of the fur seal harvest.

Consider yourself enlightened?

Hear the seldom told REAL story of the Aboriginal Seal Hunt.

This soft cover book rationally explains from both a cultural anthropologist and Wildlife Rehabilitator point of view,

the necessity of maintaining both native people’s rights and the conservation of the fishery.

Conservation is defined as wise use.

Having met Mrs. Henke during our joint legislative work with the New York State Trappers Association,

I can assure you of her sincere love of both Native People’s rights in general and animals in particular.

Animal rights organizations rarely take in the social and economical impact banning this renewable harvest,

centuries in the making, yet this book tells the plain truth backed up with biological statistics and real world,

on the ice experience.

Factual information about the Humane Society, Greenpeace, Friends of Animals, Fund for Animals, Sea Shepard

and International Fund for Animal Welfare and the less then honorable marketing of the animal rights movement.

If you think you REALLY know about the seal harvest, I promise this treatise will certainly amaze.
