A scarce early edition (1946) of this vintage Elizabeth Coatsworth classic. Winner of the 1931 John Newbery Medal for distinguished American children's literature; which is not mentioned anywhere on this copy of the story.

Synopsis: Some people say that three-colored cats such as Good Fortune are lucky cats. Her owner, a poor artist [in ancient Japan], is not very lucky until Good Fortune comes to live with him. No one buys his paintings, so he has very little money to live on. Good Fortune changes his life. Suddenly he is asked to do a painting for the temple, and Good Fortune sits with him every day, watching him paint. He knows she wants to be in the painting, but if he puts her in, the picture he will be ruined. How can he choose between success and his loyal cat? A series of Buddhist legends are cunningly woven into this plot. Written at the upper elementary reading level, for grades four to six, or ages nine to twelve.

Dust Jacket is soiled, and discolored, chipped, with several tears, and two large pieces missing (including part of the title, and the tips of the cat's ears). Dust jacket also has tape stains, and areas where it appears that tape was pulled off, removing part of the paper surfaces on the jacket flaps. Front cover has a wrinkle in its surface. There is a tear, or crack, in the lower edge of the front board, starting about 1½ inches from the joint, and extending upward about ½ inch at an angle. Edges and corners are bumped and worn. Besides a pocket, the first free fly has a soil spot about 5/8 inch in diameter. The inside of the back cover has what appears to be some paste residue. Some pages have light handling soil and / or light thumbing creases. Eleven pages have small edge tears only two of which extend to a half inch long, all of the rest are less. Overall this is a FAIR plus to GOOD minus book in a POOR DJ. Even though the Dust jacket is in POOR condition, at least it does have one; many of the copies of this book, offered elsewhere, are missing their dust jackets entirely.
