A Spy in Old Detroit

Anne Emery, illustrated by H. B. Vestal

Fifteen-year-old Paul Girard, son of a French-Canadian trader in Fort Detroit, had conflicting loyalties. he loved his brother, the brave voyageur who lived with the Indians and trapped furs for the trading post. He was close to Otussa, the son of one of the Ottawa indian chiefs and was also friendly with the English boy, Billy Turnbull, who lived outside the fort and helped farm for his widowed mother. Ever since the British took over the fort, their relations with the Indians and the French had suffered. Pontiac, the great chief of the Ottawas, laid siege to the fort, and brought many braves from the Hurons and Chippewas, backed by the French, to help destroy the British. Paul gradually changed, realizing that bravery meant more than just being free, and when he became a spy for the British, his actions saved the fort and many lives. His decision was made more difficult with his father neutral and his brother for the Indians, but living with constant danger, he proved his bravery over and over again!
