There are many vintage Jello cook booklets, but this is one I have never seen before. It was produced for restaurants and institutions. Some of these recipes are simply ideas on how to combine and display attractive Jello and pudding desserts. Some recipes would feed a crowd, such as 32 portions at 1/2 cup each. Other recipes are the same as cooking for the family such as cakes and pies. Interesting and useful Jello cook booklet.

CONDITION: Very good with clean pages and cover, tightly bound.

The New World Encyclopedia of Cooking from The Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago and edited by the staff. It is a huge, 800 page book filled with recipes, pictures, information and more. It is in wonderful condition and copyright 1975 by Processing books Inc. Ill.  The Columbia Cook Book

A Complete Home Instructor

By Adelaide Hollingsworth

Illustrated

Measures 8"x 9 1/2" x 2 1/2" thick.

As with many of the cookbooks from the 1800's this is a massive "compendium" of all aspects of running a household from cooking to flowers, medical, etiquette, nursing and cleaning. It would take hours to read this, but what a wonderful look into the life of a wife and mother in the late 1800's. These books are fascinating.

CONDITION: Cover is dark and worn. Hinges are loose but still attached. Pages are clean, but age discolored and still tightly bound except for the very last page of the index. Overall useable, but fragile, just because of it's sheer size. Nice addition to an antique cook book collection.

I have included this book in the antique cookbook category, although it is not a cookbook, but a school book relating to food. It was produced immediately following WWI by the United States Food Administration to encourage older children to save and share food so that it may be used to help starving children overseas. There is a direct message from Herbert Hoover, a hunger map of Europe, a prayer "Grace At Table", black and white photos and line drawings. This is an interesting look at a time in our history after the Great War, The War To End All Wars.

CONDITION: The cover is paper over board and has a few small slits to the paper at the spine. All pages are clean and tightly bound. The book is in very good condition at almost one hundred years old.  The Mill On The Floss by George Eliot. A paperback, 559 page book in good condition. It was re-printed by Pocket Library in 1956, with the 2nd printing in 1960 by Pocket Books Inc. George Eliot was tghe pen name used by Mary Ann Evans. Note the book has several good notes written inside. A rare, as found book.

Nothing can compare to the aroma and fragrance of freshly-baked bread, except perhaps for a plateful of delicate but rich little cookies or a moist and rich torte or cake. Home baking is one of those quiet yet deeply satisfying pleasures that not only supply satisfaction in doing but also delirium in the tasting.

What makes good baking? First-rate ingredients and careful measurement, followed by precise execution. And anything homemade will taste better than what can be store bought. This doesn't mean you can get away with baking from a mix and calling it homemade, despite the fact that many of today's baking mixes are quite good.

The effort expended in starting with flour, butter, sugar, eggs and natural flavorings is actually very little greater than opening a box, and the results will win many more compliments.

This book contains recipes from muffins, quick breads, yeast breads, biscuits, scones, rolls, cakes, pies and tarts, baked desserts, cookies, brownies and bars, plus others in 477 pages.

Published in 1997 by Smithmark Publishers, New York, New York and is still in pretty good condition.

Whether decorated with piped icing, gold leaf paint or tiny candies, the projects taste as delicious as they look.

Using simple techniques, the projects are easy to construct, and each stage is illustrated with step-by-step photographs. Beautiful finished photographs of every project complete this charming cooking-and-crafts book; it is a must for cake decorators, crafters and children of all ages.

In Great Pies and Tarts, Carole Walter has done everything possible to take the guesswork out of pastry.

Drawing on her twenty-five years of teaching and baking experience, she has crafted a work that would become the essential book for any new or experienced pastry maker.

The Primer is, in essence, a book within a book, and in it, Carole puts her years of teaching experience to use. First she teaches readers how to make two basic doughs; American-style pie pastry and French-style tart pastry. Then, in four lessons, the most popular pies and tarts are created (apple and lemon meringue, pear and French fruit with pastry cream). And once you've learned these "mother" recipes, you are set.

So whether you're a novice or a well-established baker, head for the Primer and get your hands on some flour.

Gingerbread houses are a "must" on almost everyone's list as part of the Christmas season celebration. Although you may first have heard about gingerbread as a child in the story of Hansel and Gretel, this spicy sweet is perhaps the oldest cake in the world. It is said to have been invented by a Greek from Rhodes about 2800 B.C. and soon became famous throughout the Mediterranean area.

Today we use ginger as a spice in the preparation of many dishes and gingerbread is a treat for children and adults. The simplest house in this book is the Christmas A-frame. It requires no special tools and children can do most of the decorating themselves.

If you have a little more time you can make more fanciful creations ~ an elaborate depiction of an old world castle, Santa's Christmas workshop, a church, Santa's loaded sleigh, the witches' cottage, a Nativity scene, Christmas tree decorations, a bears' cave, and more. These beautiful creations look very impressive but they aren't hard to do.

Whichever project you choose, you're sure to delight all the participants and produce a spectacular holiday showpiece to be enjoyed by all the visitors at you house.

To most people, the word gingerbread brings thoughts of cookie-cutter gingerbreadmen and women in painted coats. Gingerbread: Things to Make and Bake opens up a new world of ideas and introduces over twenty exciting and original projects, from a barn with farm animals to an angel mobile.

Gingerbread is filled with projects to make and bake all year round ~ not just during the traditional winter season. Construct a gingerbread Easter basket; make animals, toys, and shapes for a child's party or for unique holiday decorations; and, of course, use ornaments to decorate your wreath and house at Christmas.

The book is beautifully illustrated with thirty-eight full-color photographs, all taken by Randy O'Rourke, showing full views and close-ups of all the projects.

Author Barbara Morgenroth supplies a lively text and offers suggestions for special effects, such as weathered barn door, a house with chocolate shingles, and a candy pebbled walkway; and Teresa Layman, baker and designer of all the projects, provides the diagrams and techniques for both the novice and the experienced baker.

Petits fours are tiny cookies and iced cakes served at the end of a meal usually with a cop of coffee. One of the greatest French chefs of the eighteenth century, Careme, said that these little cakes were baked in the oven after the large cakes had been removed and the oven had cooled slightly.

These after dinner delights extend now to include small fancy cookies, tiny tarts and confectionery, such as chocolate coated fruits, marzipan sweets and nut confections.

This book has a wide collection of chocolates, petits fours and other confections which are especially delicious and vary from those which can be made very quickly to others requiring more time for special occasions.

Professional Touches published 1991 is an inspired book for the cake decorator who wants to extend an existing repertoire of sugarcraft skills or practice specific techniques. The author, a professional in the bakery trade, passes on her award-winning ideas in a book which displays creative designs on cakes for all occasions.

The book adopts a unique approach by using twenty cakes as platforms on which to exhibit a wide range of skills. Each cake demonstrates one or two main skills using step-by-step color photographs, plus a number of additional more intricate skills which are explained in detail throughout the book.

Lesley Herbert passes on tips of the trade and presents a number of new techniques, unpublished until now. Her determination to achieve perfection, and enormous enthusiasm for the subject are evident in a book that is both authoritative and inspiring.

An exceptionally high standard is a feature of all aspects of the craft, from the familiar basics through to complicated items such as free-hanging extension work or strips of 'ribbon' cut from the finest pastillage. '

The cakes may be completed exactly as shown or adapted to suit a particular occasion or the ability of the decorator. In addition, towards the end of the book, there is an excellent selection of flowers and sprays, from basic blossoms to an exquisite loganberry spray.

Essential information about traditional fruit cake, icings and equipment is not overlooked and extra advice on preparing for competitions provides a valuable insight for the more ambitious decorators.

Full color photographs of finished cakes, and step-by-step instructions make this book a truly invaluable source of reference.

Those who have mastered the first stages of applying icing and piping will appreciate the explicit guidance and anyone considering practicing the art at competition level may find confidence in Lesley Herbert's approach.
