Jane and Michael Stern's <b>'Road Food and Good Food'</b> is a coast-to-coast restaurant guide, Published in this 1986 combined, updated, and expanded First Edition, the book is a gold mine when you travel, helping you find the best American food wherever you go in the US.

Dividing the country into 7 regions, the authors looked at each state individually, describing their favorite eating places in each. It's a great tool when you travel -- a map locating restaurants is included at the front of each section.

The book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out!

Featuring recipes and record of good eating from the shores of Maryland and the rocky Berkshires of Massachusetts, Jane Moss Snow's <b>'A Family Harvest'</b> brings many generations of culinary knowledge -- of the Moss family of Maryland, living off the succulents of land and water; and of Snow Farm, a little world in itself, ranging to the top of the mountain, the essence of Western Massachusetts.

Snow's recipes are family treasures, beginning with the harvest of the shore -- Fish Chowder and Scallop Stew, the Royal Oysters, the Crabs, hard and soft, in fritters and pies -- encompassing the hearty fare of both worlds, the hominy and grits, the stews and roasts, the homemade breads and griddle cakes and all the cherished specialties.

It's memorable for the loving memories and mouth-watering food.

The book is in Very Good condition with no apparent defects, inside or out! The dust jacket is Good overall, with some edge/corner wear and a large tear at top of back. A previous owner's name is handwritten inside the front.

For many years, this was the most popular cook book in Canada, featuring uniformly simple recipes and inexpensive ingredients. In 1954, it was revised by Helen Wattie and Elinor Donaldson.

With more than 900 recipes, the publisher calls it 'A book for every bride, a book for every experienced cook,' with special sections on pressure cooking, oven-cooked meals, frozen foods, supper dishes and dishes from across Canada.

The book is based on the Canadian Cook Book, also by Pattinson, that was published more than 25 years earlier. There are numerous black/white photos and full-color pages.

The book and its dust jacket are in Very Good condition. The dust jacket shows no apparent defects. The book itself has light age-yellowing inside and slight discoloration on bottom of covers and endpapers from tape residue on book cover. A previous owner's name is handwritten inside the front.

This book will appeal to those who feel nostalgia for a parent's or grandparent's cooking, to those who have a longing for the heartier fare of times past.

Having grown up in a Norwegian American community imbued with the customs and foods of the Old Country, author Carrie Young recalls how her mother and neighbors skillfully blended Scandinavian with what they called 'the American style' of cooking, as she celebrates the food of her childhood in 72 unique recipes. Pemmican and pickled plums, sauerkraut and salmi of quail, Swedish flatbread and Bohemian kolaches and Danish meat roll, dishes familiar and foods exotic. You'll find them in this cook's tour of the state from Lewis and Clark to the Age of Elegance, for in its cuisine as in its weather, Nebraska is a land of variety and extremes.

Interspersed with the recipes are descriptions of food preparation and fare which tell us much about how our forebears lived -- industriously, ingeniously, and sometimes very well.

Although many of the recipes could not be duplicated in today's kitchens, there is plenty here to challenge and stimulate amateur and professional chefs -- and plenty of food for thought for social historians.

Chapters cover eras that include Early Days, Sod-House Period, Immigrant Cookery, Dining Enroute, Cowboy Fare and the Age of Elegance, as well as a chapter of miscellaneous recipes of the region. It's a fascinating book!

Condition is Very Good, with no apparent defects inside or out. A previous owner's name is handwritten inside the front.

This is another of Meta Given's comprehensive cookbooks. It contains 632 pages of recipes, followed by a glossary of terms and an index. There are many full page color illustrations.

Meta was concocting recipes at 10 years of age in her home in the Ozarks, then early began using her ingenuity to dress up the simple foods at hand, making unusual combinations, serving them in new ways.

Soon she was teaching other girls to cook, guiding their efforts particularly during WWI in the canning and drying of foods.

She headed one of the first home economics departments established by a commercial food organization and did three years of research on evaporated milk. Later she became foods editor of the Chicago Tribune, and then her own experimental kitchen.

This is a great classic cookbook, with many pictures of people and food, a great snapshot of the late 1950's cooking and lifestyles. The idea of choosing 'The World's 100 Best Recipes,' photographing them in a beautiful setting and adapting them for preparation in home kitchens was that of a distinguished German food writer, Roland Goock. His book sold more than 100 thousand copies in German.

This first paperback edition, like the original, is not all-inclusive -- the choices were based on meals the author had eaten in cities all over the world. They may not be haute cuisine, but, as the old saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Each of the 100 recipes is printed (in Engllish) on a page, facing a beautiful color photo of the dish as it's prepared for serving. Your mouth may drool over these beauties! Bon appetit!

The book is in Good condition with some light edge/corner wear. Unfortunately, the bottom 1/4 of most pages are wrinkled by what appears to be exposure to moisture. There are no stains -- just slight wrinkling. A previous owner's name is handwritten inside the front.

Jim Fobel's 'Beautiful Food' is just what you would expect when an Art Institute graduate compiled a cookbook. It contains a fresh and lively approach to preparing elegant, creative foods. The recipes are all you need to turn an ordinary luncheon or dinner into an extraordinary affair.

Every procedure is clearly and carefully explained, with 16 pages of brilliant color photos and dozens of step-by-step drawings to make the procedures even clearer.

In addition, there are patterns for the projects that require them and helpful hints interspersed throughout. You can recreate the glazed lobster with saffron-lobster salad pictured on the cover, learn to fashion fresh vegetables into a fabulous flower arrangment, or make and decorate a beautiful beige and brown three-tiered butter cake. Prepare innovative vegetarian sushi, cool salad-filled pies ot discover new holiday recipes youi've never dreamed of. This one's really as good as it looks!

Both the book and its dust jacket are in Very Good condition with minor exceptions: A 2 by 2-inch top outside corner on most pages shows creases from moisture, but there are no other signs of damage. This does not affect the covers. The dust jacket has a 1.5 inch tear at spine. A previous owner's name is handwritten inside the front.

The author informs us that the most glorious food in an American city was not to be found at the pretentious rooftop restaurant he called La Maison de la Casa House, Continental Cuisine. With three hilarious books, he established himself as 'our funniest food writer' and, in Craig Claiborne's phrase, 'the Walt Whitman of American eats.'

Now the three books have been combined in what Trillin calls The Tummy Trilogy.

The book is in Very Good condition with only light edge/corner wear. A gift inscription is handwritten inside front cover.

Artfully composed still lifes that celebrate the pleasures of eating combined with eight delicious tales of culinary fiction.

Somerset Maugham; The Man Who Loved to Eat by William Maxwell; The Spoiled Cake by Jules Renard - translated by Ralph Manheim; Tortillas and Beans by John Steinbeck; The Power of Cookery by Sylvia Townsend Warner; and His Father's Earth by Thomas Wolfe.

'Eating, which is something we used to do simply to survive, has become increasingly eroticized, politicized, fetishized, and heavily burdened with moral significance.'

The author notes that the huge array of selections in our supermarkets and the bounty of the American table should make us happy as kings.

But, while the American food experience is richer than ever before, it has never been more troubled. We have experienced a distinct loss of innocence about food and eating. And he provides answers!

Both the book and its dust jacket are in Very Good condition with very light edge/corner wear. Inside, there are no permanent marks, but a few pencil notes and underlines remain. e16

This unique cookbook defines foreign cuisines in terms of recurrent flavor combinations and cooking techniques. You can make any food taste an unlimited number of ways by varying and combining flavor principles and cooking methods.

For example, she demonstrates how easy it is to transform the simple chicken liver into a rather exotic Japanese appetizer with only the addition of the traditional Japanese flavor principle: soy sauce + sake-sugar and using the cooking technique of marinating.

Or you can make that chicken liver Greek by using the lemon-oregano principle and char-broiling technique. Or, you can create entirely new foreign dishes by combining flavor principles and cooking techniques of different cuisines.

It's a fascinating study! The book includes 200 imaginative recipes and 20 suggested foreign menus.

Both the book and its dust jacket are in Very Good condition with only very light edge/corner wear. Dust jacket is marked as book club edition. A previous owner's name is handwritten inside the front.

It is a fascinating look at the art of professional European cookery at the beginning of the 20th century.

Escoffier was a pioneer with respect to the education of professional chefs, and originally wrote this book for the use of those working in grand houses, in hotels, on ocean liners, and in restaurants who might not have had access to contemporary recipes. The recipes themselves are clear and simple to follow.

One interesting difference between modern cooking and the cooking featured in this book is that Ecoffier uses few spices.
