This is a very difficult to find title. <i><font color= blue>IT IS NOT A REPRINT! We see many reprints and 'print on demand' books for sale these days ... but we believe it's difficult in most instances to do better than the original version! Pages are where they should be ... and the photos and other illustrations are always included in the books we sell. Some of our books are ex lib (withdrawn from a library), but unless otherwise noted in our descriptions, these have no library-related damage beyond the usual library markings and card pockets. This book is one of those originals!</i></font>

Written by A.V. Wolf, PhD, Associate Professor of Physiology at Albany Medical College, Union University, and published in

1950 by Grune & Stratton, New York, <b><font color=blue>Urinary Function of the Kidney </font></b> is a book designed to combine the established facts -- old and new -- about kidney functions, then meld them into ideas that assist in the treatment of problems of thirst, diuresis and steady states.

Topics covered include urinary function in water balance and fluid transfer; regulation of body volume; renal physiology; body water compartments; dehydration and hydration; renal regulations; diuresis and diuretics; antidiuresis and antidiuretics; and endocrines in urinary function.

The 363-page hardbound book features numerous charts and graphs to illustrate the text.

Although ex lib with the usual library markings, the book is in Very Good condition. Covers show some very minor edge/corner/spine end wear. Inside pages have no apparent defects. (5159)      Asa C.Chandler, professor of biology at the Rice Institute and formerly officer-in-charge of the Hookworm Research Laboratory, School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Calcutta, India, wrote <b><font color=red>Introduction to Human Parasitology.</b></font> This is the Fifth Edition, rewritten and enlarged, published in 1936 by John Wiley & Sons, New York.

The 661-page hardbound book is divided into three main sections, dealing with protozoa, helminths and arthropods. No attempt was made to give complete descriptions of all the parasites dealt with, and throughout the book special emphasis was given to the biological aspects of the subject.

It's lengthy, illustrated with many black/white photos and drawings, and very well written! Condition is Very Good, although it is Ex Lib with the usual library markings. Covers have small light scuffs and very minor wear on edges. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5424-30)

George Lewis and Mary Hopper of Cornell University Medical School, and J. Walter Wilson and Orda Plunket, Los Angeles County Hospital, joined to write <b><font color=red>Introduction to Medical Mycology,</b></font> published in this 1958 fourth edition by Year Book Publishers, Chicago.

The 453-page hardbound book covers the coming-of-age of this area of considerable practical interest, say the authors, since diseases caused by fungi or in which fungi may be suspected as etiologic, constitute a sizable percentage of the disorders affecting the skin, and to a lesser degree, other organs of the body. It is of interest, they say, to dermatologists, specialists in other fields, and general practitioners.

And, with 118 illustrations, including black/white and color photos, it's a fount of information. A bibliography of reference books is included, as is a complete index.

The book itself is quite difficult to find in today's marketplace, but this is in Very Good condition. It is ex lib, with the usual library markings, but neither the cover nor inside pages show any apparent defects. A great resource -- at a bargain price! (5432)

With 21 illustrations, <b><font color=red> Arterial Hypertension </b></font> by Edward J. Stieglitz, MD, Rush Medical College, University of Chicago was published in 1930 by Paul B. Hoeber, New York.

<b>Difficult to find in any condition or format, this copy has a handwritten gift inscription by the author on the front endpaper.</b>

The author notes that the 'menace of arterial disease with hypertension and its subsequent threat of cardiac failure is increasing. Of all diseases, those in the group entitled cardiovascular-renal are the greatest cause of death today.'

This 280-page hardbound book represents his effort to discuss these problems in such a manner that the logic of physiologic mechanism may be used at the bedside. He presents a critical review of the literature, a statement of the extent and limitations of the contemporary knowledge, and suggests new lines of research.

The book is in Very Good condition, although it is Ex Lib with the usual library markings. Covers show very light scuffs. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5450)

Edited by C. W. Buckley MD and published in 1937 by the Macmillan Co., New York, <b><font color=blue>Chronic Rheumatic Diseases</font></b> is the Third Annual Report of the British Committee on Chronic Rheumatic Diseases Appointed by the Royal College of Physicians.

The 131-page hardbound book covers topics that include vaccines, sympathectomy, vitamins, x-ray therapy, neutrophil leucopenia, mineral metabolism, Still's Disease, chysotherapy, osteo-arthritis, research in diseases of joints, treatment of gout, and dangers in drug use for rheumatic disorders.

French and German literature is reviewed, as are abstracts from Italian journals. The book is illustrated with numerous tables and charts.

Condition of this title -- quite scarce in today's market -- is Very Good, although it is ex lib with the usual library markings. Covers show some minor wear on edges/corners and spine ends. Inside pages show no apparent defects. (5151)

The Health Research Group founded by Ralph Nader joined Sidney M. Wolf M.D. and Christopher Coley in writing <b>PILLS THAT DON'T WORK -- Prescription Drugs that Lack Evidence of Effectiveness,</b> a book that has been called 'must for medical students and doctors but, most importantly, for consumers.' The 223-page softcover book was published in 1981 by Farrar Straus Giroux, New York.

Within the covers is an astounding amount of information on prescription drugs -- ineffective dosage forms, ineffective drugs, combination drug products and identical drugs.

There's a section on treatments for common diseases -- cough, cold, allergy products; drugs for heart pain, for circulatory disorders of head and limbs, for digestive disorders; and drugs applied directly to the skin, eye or ear. Another section provides a list of 607 ineffective drugs and drug products; another provides a history of ineffective prescription drugs.

A glossary and bibliography provide more help in using the book. The authors say that one of every eight prescriptions filled in the United States is for drug not considered effective by the government's own standards. Since all drugs involve risks, this lack of effectiveness means you are exposing yourself to dangers without gaining compensating benefits. It's a frightening thought!

This book is again Near Fine condition with no defects we can find beyond slight sun-fading and a single crease along the spine. If you use prescription drugs, you'll want to take a look this one! (2505)

</b>Peter Marin and Allan Y. Cohen are authors of <b>UNDERSTANDING DRUG USE - AN ADULT'S GUIDE TO DRUGS AND THE YOUNG.</b> The 163-page hardbound book was published in 1971 by Harper & Brothers, New York.

It was written to help parents and other concerned adults understand drug use and focus on realistic approaches to dealing with it. According to the authors, the damage that can result when a parent does not understand the meaning of his child's drug taking can often be worse than that resulting from the drug use itself. The authors take for granted that at one time or another most children will try drugs and, they argue that attempts to suppress the use entirely are doomed to failure.

Rather, say Marin and Cohen, it is important to focus on the minimization of drug misuse. They concentrate here on specific ways parents, teachers, community workers and others can work with adolescents to direct them toward a sensible approach to drugs.

The suggestions include: what to do if your child is arrested; what to do if your child has a 'bad trip;' helpful and unhelpful attitudes, establishing sensible guidelines for drug use, how to replace guilt with understanding, and how to inform yourself on drug use.

The measures suggested are both long-range and short-range, both preventive and therapeutic.

The book is ex lib, but still in Very Good condition, with the usual library markings. Covers show some minor edge wear, but are protected with the library's Mylar covering. There is some residue where the dust jacket and Mylar cover were attached to the book. Inside pages show no defects we can see.

It's still a very timely subject … and here are some hard-to-find answers! (1585)
