China and Dinnerware

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of China and Dinnerware?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
This country soup tureen/server made by Rossini of Japan was made as part of a set that features a hen in a basket design, with the chicken done in shades of yellow and brown, with red crest and black tail feathers. The basket weave decor on the body has a central leaf design.

The tureen measures 7 inches long, 4 1/4 inches wide and 6 3/4 inches tall. Out of all the pieces we are offering in this pattern, this one seems to have the most wear. There is an area of missing glaze on the back side of the accompanying soup ladle that may have chipped off due to what appears to be a superficial crack or manufacturing flaw, plus a few areas where the body of the tureen meets the attached bottom that have the white pottery showing through. We are not certain as to whether these may be glaze skips that occurred during the manufacturing process, or whether it's paint loss/chips due to use. Additionally, there are some areas of missing paint on the crest of the chicken. Despite the issues noted, there are no blatant breaks or damage to the tureen. Crazing is present as mentioned with the other pieces.

Stamped on the bottom in black lettering Japan. These was part of a lot we purchased, with other pieces having a Rossini Japan foil label attached.

The tureen/server would work separately, or would also go great coupled with any of the other pieces we have to offer in the same design. As always, we are more than happy to offer combined shipping on multiple items to offer a shipping discount.  This country salt and pepper shaker set made by Rossini of Japan was made as part of a set that features a hen in a basket design, with the chicken done in shades of yellow and brown, with red crest and black tail feathers. Other pieces feature a basket weave design on the bodies with the chicken on top.

The taller shaker, with the chicken standing upright, measures 3 1/2 inches in height and 3 inches in width and has 3 pouring holes on the front of its chest. The other shaker, with his head down in a pecking stance, is 3 1/8 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches wide and has 2 pouring holes. Both have plastic stoppers in place on the bottom. Although there is crazing present, there are no chips, cracks or flakes. Stamped on the bottom in black lettering Japan. These was part of a lot we purchased, with other pieces having a Rossini Japan foil label attached.

Rosenthal / Selb-Bavaria / Tirana.

Phillip Rosenthal (1855-1937) began business in 1884 by purchasing white ware from Hutschenreuther and selling designs, handpainted by his wife Maria, door to door. In 1891, he established a factory in Asch, Bohemia and began production of white ware for use in his workshop. From 1897 to 1936, Rosenthal acquired factories in Kronach, Marktredwitz, Selb, Waldenburg, Sophienthal, and Waldershof. The popularity of the Maria White and Moss Rose patterns helped the business grow rapidly. By the time of WWII, Rosenthal operated 10 companies and employed over 5,000 people. When the war ended, Rosenthal’s son, Phillip, returned to Germany where he modernized out of date factories and reestablished lost markets. Phillip quickly rebuilt the business by reaching new markets interested in the modern shapes and artistry of his dinnerware. To this day, Rosenthal continues to work with leaders in fashion and design to create unique tabletop designs.

Scalloped edging, embossed scroll decoration, and narrow gold band all enhance the pretty pink roses with their silvery gray leaves on this Wawel, Made in Poland 6 1/2 inch diameter plate.

The plate will be accompanied by an acrylic stand for readiness of display, and is stamped on the backside with the Wawel name.  Sterling China of East Liverpool, Ohio was noted for its manufacture of fine quality restaurant, hotel and transportation ware. These are hefty, vitrified china pieces which were made to withstand cracks, chips, and nicks with daily use.

This 7 inch diameter luncheon plate has a 1 inch decoration of pink and blue flowers with green leaves surrounding the rim. Included with the fine condition plate is an acrylic stand for display. The plate is stamped in green on the backside with the Sterling China name.  The Rosenthal China Claudia pattern has a wonderful hand painted design of light moss green with pastel pink and yellow flowers on a white background. The 2 3/8 inch tall cups have a 3 3/4 inch opening across the top and are complemented by the 6 inch in diameter saucers.

The only previous owner was one of the first WAC nurses to serve during WWII, and she purchased her Rosenthal China during the late 40’s/early 50’s time period. Although we do not have an exact date of manufacture, we know that the Form E stamped on the base refers to the Elfenbein time frame of manufacture between the years of 1901 to the mid 1950’s.

The cup and saucer are without any damage issues and were mostly on display in a breakfront cabinet. This offering is for a single cup and saucer although we do have a total of six available for purchase. The green R.C. stamp with the X lines mark can be found under the base, along with what we believe is the decorator’s name, Waltrand in gold ink.  The Rosenthal luncheon plate measures 7 3/4 inches in diameter and has those marvelous clusters of vibrant flowers in the moss green, pink and yellow colors. Gold encrusted rim completes the elegant, classic look on this 1940’s to 50’s manufactured Claudia pattern.

There are no cracks, chips, or nicks on the luncheon plate, but we note light knife marks on 2 of the 6 plates we have for purchase. The plate is stamped in green under the base with the R.C. and X lines mark, Kronach Germany. It is also signed in gold ink, Waltrand which may be the decorator’s name.

Rosenthal / Continentl China Claudia #2970 $11.25

The sugar bowl measures 2 3/4 inches to the top of the lid and has gold treatment on the lid’s button finial. Vibrant clusters of moss green, pastel yellow and pink flowers against the white background are a real stand-out.

The Form E referred to on the base is the time frame for creation – 1901-mid 1950’s. Most likely dates back to late 40’s/early 50’s. Rosenthal green stamp, R.C. and X lines are present under the base, along with Waltrand in gold ink. No damage issues on this fine china.  Exceptional quality and hand painted design of light moss green, pastel pink and yellow flowers on the 2 3/4 inch tall Rosenthal Claudia pattern creamer.

Although we do not have an exact date of manufacture, the Form E on the base refers to the Elfenbein time line which was stamped on china made between 1901 and the mid 1950’s. The only previous owner was one of the first WAC nurses to serve during WWII and she purchased the tea and luncheon set during the late 40’s to early 50’s time period.

The creamer has been only minimally used and is in excellent vintage condition without any chips, flakes or loss of color. Stamped with Rosenthal R.C. and trademark crown and X lines under the base, along with Waltrand in gold.  Hand painted flower clusters of light moss green, pastel pink and yellow decorate the 4 cup tea pot which stands 3 3/4 inches to the top of the lid. The button finial on the tea pot is gold encrusted and adds to the classic, elegant design.

Purchased at an antique estate sale, the Claudia pattern has a Form E or Elfenbein time line with manufacture extending from 1901 to mid 1950’s. Most likely, this pattern was created in the 1940’s to perhaps early 1950’s. The one previous owner was one of the first WAC nurses to serve during WWII, and she bought the Rosenthal china during that time period.

The tea pot has been used minimally. All of the Rosenthal Claudia pieces were mostly on display in a breakfront cabinet. There are no damage issues on this tea post with the R.C. crown, X lines, and green stamp under the base. In addition, it is signed in gold ink, Waltrand, which customarily indicates the decorator’s name.  VINTAGE 1950`S DRAGON WARE MINIATURE TEAPOT FLORIDA. MEASURES OVERALL 3 1/4W X 2H X 2 1/2W INCHES.
