China and Dinnerware: Adams

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of China and Dinnerware: Adams?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
Adams ironstone, Micratex England, blue and white Baltic pattern coffee cup. Used condition-no cracks, no crazing, just some edge wear on the rim and handle and a few flea bite glaze nicks. Great replacement piece for everyday use!  This is an Adams "Lancaster" 5 3/4" saucer. It is white with red flowers, green leaves and blue trim. It is in excellent condition.  This is a vintage ironstone red transferware 9.75 inch in diameter souvenir plate depicting where Abraham Lincoln first practiced law in New Salem, Illinois made by Adams, England and imported by JonRoth under the Old English Staffordshire Ware label that I brought home recently from England. The plate was made between 1911-1930s and was apparently commissioned by the Wagon Wheel Inn, New Salem, Ill. The plate has stilt marks on the back and is in excellent condition. Very collectible and a wonderful collectible historical piece.  Mr. Pickwick addresses the Club plate is an illustration taken from Dickens Pickwick Papers. Adams, established in 1657, Tunstall, England is known for earthenware of good quality. The plate measures 8" diameter. There is crazing front and back however the glaze is intact. No chips or cracks are evident.

Adams Lancaster Saucer $2.99

Lincoln Red Transferware Plate New Salem $54.00

Mr. Pickwick Addresses the Club Octagon $35.00

This is a really lovely Adams, England victorian jasper ware pitcher or jug in a dark blue dip with classical applied relief figures like Wedgwood's Sacrifice Figures that I brought back recently from England. The pitcher or jug measures 5.5 inches high by 3.75 inches in diameter and has the following impressed marks: Adams Est. 1657, D 36 S, Tunstall England. From the marks it dates to 1896. The pitcher or jug is in very good +++ condition with no chips or cracks and is a beautiful piece.  Nifty antique or vintage souvenir china piece for historic Jamestown (also sometimes spelled James Towne or Jamestowne) in Virginia (VA, Va.), showing the Old Church Tower. Blue and white coloring in the traditional "flow blue" type blue color (the images may make the coloring seem darker due to camera lighting, but this is a traditional rich medium blue color within the range of blue seen with Flow Blue/Flo Blue plates). Fully marked on the backside as having been made by Adams in England, and marked as having been made specifically for The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. We are uncertain of the age of this piece, it could be from the 1960's but don't know that for certain.

From a little research, Jamestown was founded in 1607 as the first permanent English settlement in America, located on the banks of the James River on Jamestown Island in Virginia. The area is called Historic Jamestowne today and administered by the National Park Service and Preservation Virginia. Among the interesting things to see there are ruins of original buildings from the town including the original 17th century church tower shown on this plate. The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities was founded in 1889. It is today often referred to as Preservation Virginia and is a private non-profit organization working with historic preservation within the state.

Round plate measuring about 7 inches in diameter and sitting about 5/8 inch in height. Frontside center is dominated with the line drawing of the church tower which looks as if it might be covered with ivy plant on the face, which we do not believe to be the case with this today. Near the tower are trees and a fence. At the bottom are the words "Old Church Tower, Jamestown Virginia." This is surrounded by a floral motif near the plate edges. On the backside are words in a curved circle format. At the top it states "Jamestown Virginia, Site of the First Permament English Settlement in America 1607". Under this on the right is the Adams with crown manufacturer marking with the Adams name appearing above the crown and "Estd 1657, England" below it. On the left side are the words "Made Exclusively For" with bottom words "The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities". There is a printed "G" to the upper left of all this. We've provided 6 images to show different views and close-ups including a close-up of the central graphic, location wording and the manufacturer marking. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface.

This piece is in wonderful condition for it's age and we see no major flaws. The plate appears to have never been used and perhaps was just displayed on a shelf. There are some small scratches on the topside flatter outer portion, but nothing bad and you don't see these unless looking very closely at an angle in bright light. There is no crazing, chips or cracks. There are pin/pit dots in the glazing. On the backside there is a small discolored light brown spot. A terrific looking piece to display.

A great addition to any collection of vintage souvenir memorabilia related to Virginia, Jamestown, National Parks, or local history or tourist attractions. Would also make a great gift for someone interested in early colonial American history or American history in general. Also could add to a general collection of antique Jonroth China or Adams China pieces.  Nifty antique or vintage souvenir china piece for Barbara Fritchie's Home or The Barbara Fritchie House & Museum in Frederick, Maryland, showing an outdoor view of the house. The plate has blue and white coloring in the traditional "flow blue" type blue color (the images may make the coloring seem darker due to camera lighting, but this is a traditional rich medium blue color within the range of blue seen with Flow Blue/Flo Blue plates). Fully marked on the backside as having been made by Adams Potteries for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire England, and marked as having been imported specifically for The Barbara Fritchie House & Museum. From the style and markings, we believe this piece to date to the 1900s teens through 1930s period, although no manufacturer date appears on the piece.

From a little research, Barbara Fritchie (whose name has also been spelled Barbara Frietchie and Barbara Frietschie) was made famous in a patriotic 1864 poem by John Greenleaf Whittier titled Barbara Frietchie, and an 1899 play with the same name by Clyde Fitch. She was a real woman who lived from 1766 to 1862, lived the later part of her life in Frederick, MD and was a Unionist during the Civil War. The poem focuses on a story which made her a legendary American hero, by waving the American flag (Stars and Stripes) from an upper window in her home in defiance of Stonewall Jackson and his Confederate troops as they marched by. Apparently when Winston Churchill passed through Federick in 1943 he stopped at the house and recited the poem. The location was a privately owned museum which used to be open to the public, but an internet listing stated that it is now closed.

Round plate measuring about 6 7/8 inches in diameter and sitting about 5/8 inch in height. Frontside center picture shows the house and nearby building. This is surrounded by a floral motif near the plate edge. At the bottom center appear the words "Barbara Fritchie's Home, Frederick, MD." On the backside is quoted several lines from John Greenleaf Whittier's poem. The poem title appears, Barbara Fritchie, and then a scroll with the lines "Up rose old Barbara Fritchie then. Bowed with her fourscore years and ten; Bravest of all in Frederick town, She took up the flag the men hauled down: "Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, But spare your country's flag", she said." Below this there is a a curve "Old English Staffordshire Ware" within which appears the insignia with crown for "Jonroth England". Under this are the words "Made by the Adams Potteries. Est 1657, Staffordshire England, Imported for The Barbara Fritchie House & Museum, Frederick, MD." We've provided 6 images to show different views and close-ups including close-ups of the graphic, location wording and the manufacturer markings. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface.

This piece is in wonderful condition for it's age, with nothing major wrong with it. The topside of the plate does have some small surface scratches but nothing bad and you only see these when looking at the plate very closely when held at an angle in bright light. To us, we don't think it was ever used but perhaps was just displayed on a shelf. There are pin/pit dots in the glazing. We don't see any crazing on the topside and only a few crazing lines on the underside. There are no chips, cracks, etc. A terrific looking piece.

A great addition to any collection of vintage souvenir memorabilia related to Maryland in general, the city of Frederick or a collection related to local history or tourist attractions. Would also make a great gift for someone interested in the poetry of John Greenleaf Whittier, legendary American heroes, famous American women historical figures, Barbara Fritchie in particular or perhaps someone interested in Civil War stories and history. Would be a nice piece for adding to a general collection of antique Jonroth China or Adams China pieces.  Nifty antique or vintage souvenir china piece for Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky (Kent., Ky.), showing the Log Cabin in which the 16th President of the United States was born. Blue and white coloring in the traditional "flow blue" type blue color (the images may make the coloring seem darker due to camera lighting, but this is a traditional rich medium blue color within the range of blue seen with Flow Blue/Flo Blue plates). Fully marked on the backside as having been made by Adams for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire England, and marked as having been imported specifically for the Nancy Lincoln Inn in Hodgenville, KY. From the style and markings, we believe this piece to date to the 1900s teens through 1930s period, although no manufacturer date appears on the piece. The Adams mark shown was used by the company between 1914 and 1940.

Round plate measuring about 6 7/8 inches in diameter and sitting 5/8 inch in height. Frontside center picture shows the Log Cabin structure at an angle with trees, plants and grass near it. This is surrounded by a floral motif near the plate edges. At the bottom center appear the words "Lincoln's Birthplace, Kentucky". On the backside there is a a curve "Old English Staffordshire Ware" and under this are the insignias with crowns for "Jonroth England" and "Adams, Estd. 1057, England". Note this says "1057" where normally the mark says "1657". It may be that the top line of the 6 didn't transfer or it may be an error in this mark, we don't know. Beneath this is "Made in Staffordshire England" and "Imported for Nancy Lincoln Inn, Hodgenville, KY." There is also an "H" mark. We've provided 7 images to show different views and close-ups including a close-up of the central graphic, location wording and the manufacturer markings. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface.

This piece is in wonderful condition for it's age, but it's not mint. The plate appears to have never been used and perhaps was just displayed on a shelf, as we see only a very few tiny surface scratches which you don't see unless looking very closely at an angle in bright light. There is no crazing visible on the topside, but there is visible crazing on some of the underside of the plate. There are pin/pit dots in the glazing. We note three very minor flaws. On the topside there is a tiny, tiny oval flake near/along the outer rim which looks like it was made in manufacture as it appears to be glazed over. This measures about 1/16 inch in width and appears at about the "1 o'clock" point if one were looking at a clock face. On the underside at the rim in one spot there is also a tiny, tiny nick/flake which we can feel with a fingernail, also about 1/16 inch in width, and elsewhere near/on the underside rim we note a tiny brown line of similar size (not sure if this is a tiny hairline or not). Most people wouldn't see any of this and would think the plate looks terrific...and it does....but you need to know that these are there. Nothing "jumps out" at the viewer nor should be a problem for the plate on display hanging on a wall or sitting upright on a plate stand.

A great addition to any collection of vintage souvenir memorabilia related to Kentucky in general or the city of Hodgenville, Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace or the Nancy Lincoln Inn. Would also make a great gift for someone interested in Abraham Lincoln in general, or interested in local history, important places, or National Historic Parks, which this site is, and could add to a general collection of antique Jonroth China or Adams China pieces.

Nifty antique or vintage souvenir china piece for My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, Kentucky (Kent.), showing the Georgian-style mansion or home at this locale. This house is famous as being the location at which Stephen Collins Foster in 1852 (while visiting his cousins, the Rowan family) wrote the famous song, My Old Kentucky Home, which is the official state song of Ky. The locale is now a Kentucky State Park site. The plate has blue and white coloring in the traditional "flow blue" type blue color (the images may make the coloring seem darker due to camera lighting, but this is a traditional rich medium blue color within the range of blue seen with Flow Blue/Flo Blue plates). Fully marked on the backside as having been made by Adams Potteries for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire England, and marked as having been imported specifically for My Old Kentucky Home, Bardstown, KY. From the style and markings, we believe this piece to date to the 1900s teens through 1930s period, although no manufacturer date appears on the piece.

Round plate measuring about 6 7/8 inches in diameter and sitting about 5/8 inch in height. Frontside center picture shows the mansion with trees near it. Above the home to the right is an oval inset line image drawing of Stephen Foster with his signature printed in script, under which his full name is shown, "Stephen Collins Foster". All this is surrounded by a floral motif near the plate edge. At the bottom center appear two lines of words "My Old Kentucky Home, Where Stephen Collins Foster Wrote the Immortal Song". On the backside appears the music notes for the first line of the song with the words underneath, "The Sun Shines Bright in My Old Ken-tuck-y Home". Below this there is a a curve "Old English Staffordshire Ware" within which appears the insignia with crown for "Jonroth England. Under this are the words "Made in Staffordshire, England. By the Adams Potteries. Estd 1657, Imported Exclusively for My Old Kentucky Home. Bardstown, Kentucky." There are light smeared blue diagonal lines from the manufacturer printing process through these words. We've provided 8 images to show different views and close-ups including close-ups of the graphics, location wording and the manufacturer markings. Please note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the high gloss surface.

This piece is in very nice condition for it's age, but it's not mint. The plate appears to have never been used and perhaps was just displayed on a shelf, as we see no surface scratches. There is some crazing visible on the topside and underside of the plate. There are pin/pit dots in the glazing. The main flaw is a chip on the underside of the plate near/touching the rim. You don't see this from the topside, but the chip touches the rim on the bottomside. This is an oval chip measuring about 1/4 inch greatest width with about 1/8 inch of the chip along the underside rim. There is depth to the chip, it is not just a slight surface chip on the backside. Looking at the front of the plate on display you would not know it is there and the plate looks terrific, but you need to know that this is there.

A great addition to any collection of vintage souvenir memorabilia related to Kentucky in general, the city of Bardstown, My Old Kentucky Home, or a collection related to Kentucky State Parks, local history or tourist attractions. Would also make a great gift for someone interested in music, popular or traditional songs, or composers in general, or Stephen Foster in specific. Would be a nice piece for adding to a general collection of antique Jonroth China or Adams China pieces.  This is an Adams "Lancaster" 7 3/8" tall 5 cup coffee pot. Made by Adams Potteries for Jonroth (an importer of souvenir pieces) in Staffordshire, England. This piece is china, ceramic or pottery; it is not porcelain as it is not translucent. Measures 4 1/4 inches in height, about 4 1/2 inches in greatest width (from outside of handle to opposite end of mug), and about 3 9/16 inches in depth. We don't know the age of this vintage piece, but we guesstimate that it could date to the 1920s or 1930s from the style.

Neat, clean white pottery with transfer image in red of George Washington's head quarters in Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War on both sides of the mug, with an upper rim border of floral and geometric trim. There is a red line decor on the squarish, angular handle. Shape of the mug is largely round with fluting...it is not a circle but has a wavy, fluted feel to the top and bottom edges and overall body of the mug as molded. At the bottom of the image on both sides are printed the words, "Washington's Headquarters, 1777-78 Valley Forge, PA" (Pa, Pennsylvania, Penn., Penna.). The old mug is fully marked on the underside base with, "Old English Staffordshire Ware, Jonroth, England" with the Jonroth crown insignia, and under this, "Made in Staffordshire England by the Adams Potteries established in 1657." There is also a transfer "E" in black that is partially visible on the underside. We have provided six images showing from different sides including close-ups and the manufacturer marking.

Excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. There are a few stray scratches or rubbed marks but nothing major and nothing to worry about. As manufactured, there are some stray transfer red dots, pin & pit dots, tiny dark dots, etc., but nothing bad or unexpected. There is one spot along the rim which has some very tiny dark dots and perhaps a touch of glaze wear, but nothing bad at all (no chips, we're looking very, very close to find this). And two spots on the sides near the rim where there is a touch of wear to the red transfer, but this may be incomplete transferring as it was made, we don't know, this doesn't look worn to us. This mug is very clean and good-looking, looking to us as if it was never used but just sat on a shelf on display. There is expected wear/darkening to the underside base from age sitting.

A lovely piece to add to any collection of souvenir china relating to Valley Forge, Valley Forge National Park, George Washington at Valley Forge or items related to the Revolutionary War in America overall. Also a nice addition to any collection of Jonroth Studios or Adams Potteries pieces. Could make an interesting gift for anyone interested in national park collectibles or memorabilia or items related to President George Washington or this period in history.

History

By the early nineteenth century William Adams had expanded his business greatly. He had six factories producing – five at Stoke and one at Greenfield, besides two at Burslem let to John Wedgwood and Enoch Wood and Sons. Taking his sons into partnership the firm became William Adams and Sons with extensive overseas connections and they turned out every type of useful earthenware, hospital wares and stone ware, besides high grade dinner and tea services. In the 1840's they followed Copeland's lead in making 'Parian' ware figures modelled by Giovanni Meli and W. Beattie.
