Barton Wright, the pre-eminent historian, curator, and proponent of these native crafts-people, has filled that void by collecting and organizing these hallmarks into a useful book. Compiled over many years of work with the craftspeople, and with the cooperation of one of their main organizing bodies, the Indian Arts and Crafts Association, Mr. Wright has with this book both made a useful tool for identification and left an important record of the work of these talented people. The information is alphabetically arranged with important personal data, tribal affiliation, working dates, materials used, and facsimiles of their marks. Table of Contents: - - For centuries soldiers and woodsmen have armed themselves with the tomahawk, and for good reason. Its design is simple but extremely effective at both close and throwing ranges; it does double duty as a close-quarters weapon and a field tool, great for dispatching attackers and busting through doors; and it is durable, easily repaired and readily available without a permit or license. Tomahawks: Traditional to Tactical traces the evolution of the tomahawk as a tactical weapon. Though author David Grant examines historical and traditional designs, his primary focus is on the tactical tomahawks of today. Grant uses his firsthand knowledge of hawks to analyze the contributions of tactical pioneer Peter LaGana, creator of the legendary Vietnam Tomahawk, as well as those of the best modern masters, including Wally Hayes, J. Neilson, Daniel Winkler and Kevin McClung, among others. Dozens of photographs showcase an amazing variety of tomahawk styles, including those offerings from American Tomahawk Company, Bear Mountain Tomahawks, Graham Brothers Knives, Ranger Knives and RMJ Forge. An instructive chapter on choosing the best tomahawk for your needs and contact information for designers and manufacturers round out this indispensable guide to the modern tactical tomahawk.

Collector Bookstore Notes: This title showcases stellar Navajo and Zuni silver and turquoise, Hopi silver and Pueblo stone and shell jewelry from the Millicent Rogers Museum Collection of Native American Indian jewelry. Publishers Description: ART PATRON MILLICENT ROGERS was a passionate collector who assembled a stellar collection of Navajo and Zuni silver and turquoise, Hopi silver-work, and Pueblo stone and shell jewelry during the late 1940s and early 1950s when fine late nineteenth- and early- twentieth-century work could still be found. Her collection provided the foundation for what has become one of America's most important repositories for the aesthetic achievements of Native American jewelry makers in the Southwest. The Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, New Mexico, honors the memory and creative life of Millicent Rogers and holds the majority of her personal collection of some 3,000 pieces, assembled during the time of her residence in Taos from 1947 until her untimely death in 1953. Oil heiress and fashion icon Millicent Rogers left the glamorous world of couturiers and the pages of Vogue to establish herself in Taos and to embark, despite failing health, on a robust path both to collect Indian and Hispano arts and crafts and to champion the distinctive importance of Native culture. A famous model and clothes designer in her own right, she also possessed a gift for jewelry collecting and designing. Fine Indian Jewelry of the Southwest presents Rogers's collection through her New Mexico experience, bringing to life the Taos she discovered and showcasing the authentic, classic era jewelry that she collected at a time when Fred Harvey and others were popularizing Indian made tourist pieces. The Millicent Rogers Museum has continued to collect Indian jewelry since Millicent Rogers's death, and the book includes striking examples of contemporary Navajo and Pueblo jewelry that, along with the Rogers collection, will serve as a solid overview of Southwest Indian jewelry from prehistory to the present.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. JUST BEFORE THE TURN OF THE CENTURY, Catherine Marshall Gardiner of Laurel, Mississippi, read an article about Native American baskets and found herself tempted by the possibility of collecting them. At first she planned to collect only contemporary baskets, but, she said, "the lure of old and fine work specimens soon gained the ascendancy." When she embarked on this project, she little realized that she would become one of the premier collectors of the period, often called the golden age of basket collecting. By 1923, when she donated her collection of almost five hundred baskets to the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, she had amassed one of the most representative collections of North American Native basketry in the southeastern United States. Basketry is an infinitely variable medium--baskets can be simple, unadorned utilitarian objects or works of great complexity, made to be beautiful but not used. Yet even the most practical basket, well made, can be a thing of beauty wherein form follows function, design is influenced by centuries of tradition, and materials reflect the region in which the weaver is grounded. Whether fancy or practical, tiny or oversized, every basket tells a story, has a purpose, and is a work of art. More importantly, each basket comes from a pair of Native hands which created a woven treasure that would stand the test of time. A close look at the varieties of Native American basketry reveals the cultural history of the tribe of origin as well as the expression of a weaver's artistry both important parts of our nation's history. By Native Hands: Woven Treasures from the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art takes this close look at the LRMA collection of Native American baskets, which encompasses a stunning array of styles, colors, materials, and techniques. New research on the collector and the collection are presented in essays covering each major North American culture region. More than two hundred archival and contemporary photographs, many of them previously unpublished, tell the story of this important collection. A full checklist of the collection and comprehensive bibliographies from each author will aid scholars, collectors, and weavers who wish to explore this rich body of material.

In 1974 "Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery" was published to accompany an exhibit at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology: twenty years later there are some 80,000 copies in print. Like "Seven Families," this updated and greatly enlarged version by Rick Dillingham, who curated the original exhibition, includes portraits of the potters, color photographs of their work, and a statement by each potter about the work of his or her family. In addition to the original seven the Chino and Lewis families (Acoma Pueblo), the Nampeyos (Hopi), the Guteirrez and Tafoya families (Santa Clara), and the Gonzales and Martinez families (San Ildefonso)the author had added the Chapellas and the Navasies (Hopi-Tewa), the Chavarrias (Santa Clara), the Herrera family (Choti), the Medina family (Zia). and the Tenorio-Pacheco and the Melchor families (Santo Domingo). Because the craft of pottery is handed down from generation to generation among the Pueblo Indians, this extended look at multiple generations provides a fascinating and personal glimpse into how the craft has developed. Also evident are the differences of opinion among the artists about the future of Pueblo pottery and the importance of following tradition. A new generation of potters has come of age since the publication of "Seven Families." The addition of their talents, along with an ever-growing interest in Native American pottery, make this book a welcome addition to the literature on the Southwest.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. A Hopi Indian will tell you that a kachina is a supernatural being who is impersonated by a man wearing a mask. Small wooden dolls carved in the likenesses of the various kachinas are used to help teach Hopi children the tribal religion and traditions. Each child receives a doll made especially for him by his male relatives. He treasures the doll and studies it so that he can learn to recognize and respect the host of spirit kachinas that people the Hopi world. Kachinas are difficult to classify because different Hopi pueblos have different ideas about their appearance and their functions. The late Dr. Harold S. Colton identified 266 different kinds of kachina dolls, and in this book he describes the meaning, the making, and the principal features of all of them. Each type of doll is pictured in a simplified line drawing. There is also an illustrated key to help the collector identify the various types.ACCLAIM: "After even a cursory glance at the book you will yearn for a kachina of your own." --Midwestern Banker "Collectors and museum curators will welcome the revised edition of this book. In various parts of the world, man first used the horse for food and used his hide for clothing...and then tied him to burdens to be dragged. However, it was the invention of the bit that made the horse the great tool of man. First man used horses for his chariots, then men riding horse back brought order to civilization out of chaos. From the time of the Sumerian chariots, sixty centuries ago, until the coming of the railroad, the horse was man's land transportation. Not only was the bit a necessity in making the horse play an important role in the practical affairs of government, warfare, and transport, it was also essential in making the horse play a leading part in the refinements of country life.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas.
