<b>Ghana - Akubaba/Akua ba Doll</b>


Ashanti women carry Akuaba dolls in a cloth wrapped around their back as a charm to ensure the birth of healthy, attractive children. They are also carried by small girls tucked into the back at their waist clothes.


Ashantis admire a high, round forehead. The rings on the neck represent 

rolls of fat. This is also preferred as an indication of being well-fed. Akuaba dolls usually have small female breasts.

Côte-d'Ivoire is a republic in western Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. It is one of the most prosperous countries in Africa.


Heddle pulleys are used in strip-weaving, a process that uses very small looms to produce long, narrow strips of cloth which are later sewn together to create a larger textile, such as a blanket.


Very handsome carving of a long beaked bird.

Condition: very good - arms and legs are articulated


Material: wood, metal plugs? connecting arms and legs to body, beads for inlaid eyes.


Weight:  Total: ¾ lb.


These figures were collected in 2002 from Tanzania


These figures with movable arms and legs were made by Aaramo and Kwere people.<div> They were used as funerary figures when single and as marriage gifts in pairs. For funerals,<div>they were manipulated by a person who played the role of the eldest son or nephew<div>and sang the praises of the dead  person.


Tanzania is a republic in eastern Africa.

One of the few wooden objects made by women. This Maasai doll represents the Maasai in traditional dress. Wood, leather, beads, metal.


The Maasai are an indigenous African ethnic group of semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania. Due to their distinctive customs and dress and residence near the many game parks of East Africa, they are among the most well-known African ethnic groups internationally.

Condition: Very Good. - there are two fine splits on the cup's right side. These are shown in the photos.  There is an old label someone has put on the bottom, 'Baluba Tribe, Belgian Congo & quot;. Standing male as drinking beaker. This is an old piece with very nice patine.'

Size: 15 Inches H x 5 Inches W x 4 Inches D.


Age: 20th Century.


Condition: Good. It shows wear, tear & age crack lines.


Material: Wood and kaolin.

The Mbole people live in north-eastern Congo on the left bank of the Congo River. The Mbole figures are characterized by their geometric features and enlarged heads.


 Please note that the figure is not free standing.  This is a beautiful hand-made and hand-painted, one of a kind, ceramic statue of a black woman on a donkey or burro measuring 6 inches wides by 8 inches tall, in excellent condition except for small chips in the lower part of the hat brim and repair lines around the neck.  There are no markings to determine where it comes from, but it has the flavor of Jamaica or some other island country. The pictures do not do it justice!  It is a rare and unusual collectible! These were basket handles There are holes around the bottom  of the pieces, which could have been used to connect the figures to a large  container. There are traces of red, white and blue paint on the pair. On each of the stands there are four faces carved. There are traces of paint on these also.     <b>African Figure/Mask - Hand Carved</b>

This is an art form of the Ashanti region  of Ghana. This Mask is often called the Bat Mask. Referring to the wisdom knot that binds a husband and wife together as one person. Two knots and a head symbolizing unity are reflected in the mask's design. 


A very handsome piece. There is a  small hole near the top of the head for hanging.

<b>Ghana Tribal Wooden Ceremonial Mask - Hand Carved</b>


Excellent Detail.


Size: 22-1/2 Inches Tall x 11-1/2 Inches Wide. 


Age: 35+ Years. It was brought back from Ghana in the 1960's.


Condition: Very Good, there is a slight indentation on one eye rim, which I believe is part of the original wood. This mask has tribal scarification of the forehead and cheeks. He is very fierce looking.


Weight: 4 lbs. 10 Oz's.


There is a wire on the back for hanging.

Size: 12 Inches Tall x 5 Inches Wide.


The misshaped  conformation of the facial features are classic Tschokwe traits. He has a wonderful patina. He has several age cracks, which I have shown in the photos.  My best guess is he is at least 50+ Years Old. He has a great presence. 


The Tchokwe Tribal Art is well known and much sought after by collectors. The Tchokwe is from Angola, Africa


Weight: 1 lb. 6 Oz's.  <b>Hand Carved African Lega Female Figure</b>


This is a genuinely wonderful find. She is made from the end of a horn (ivory or bone) and has an exquisite fine brown patina. The figure has deeply carved ritual scarifications.


 Size: 8-1/2 Inches Tall x 2 Inches Wide x 1-1/2 Inches Deep


Weight: 13 Oz's.


She is old. I have  had her for 30 years and she was aged when I acquired her from a very respected Dealer in Ethnographic Arts.


Condition: Very Good. There are  a few cracks in the bone, which is consistent with age.  <b>South African Miniature Raku Mask</b>


Size: 4-1/2 Inches Tall x 2-1/4 Inches Wide


The rich geometric pattern is in tribal colors. The gently crackled surface is characteristic of Raku. The mask has its own stand. The back is a shiny black.
