As the Victorian era passed into the Edwardian and Roaring Twenties, a market developed for bisque and china naughty novelties and figurines of women in revealing outfits. These little lovelies include bathing beauties, who came clad in swimsuits of real lace or stylish painted beach wear, as well as mermaids, harem ladies, and nudies, who wear only an engaging smile. Also produced were flippers (innocent appearing figurines who reveal a bawdy secret when flipped over) and water squirters. Most of these figures were manufactured in Germany from the late 1800s through the 1930s, often showing remarkable artistry and imagination. This photographic study showcases an extraordinary variety of figurines, and the in-depth text will help collectors and dealers discover the rich history behind them. Manufacturing techniques, marks, and manufacturers are discussed, including Galluba and Hoffman, William Goebel, Hertwig and Company, Weiss, Schafer and Vater, and more. Decorative details, size, and current value are provided for each figurine. A delightful reference for bathing beauty and doll collectors, Art Deco aficionados, and all who enjoy things naughty and mischievous.

Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. In this remarkable book, costumer and researcher Marianne Burke presents a richly illustrated study of head wear in the twenty-year period between 1855-1875. Her detailed discussion of the development of hair and headwear styles throughout this era is accompanied by period photographs known as cartes de visite, as well as numerous illustrations from fashion periodicals of the time such as Godeys Ladys Book, Harpers Bazar and Petersons Magazine. It was during these years that the luxurious French lady dolls, so ardently collected today, assumed their great popularity. Collectors of these dolls have long been frustrated by the lack of accessible instructions and patterns for head wear for their elegant models. This is the first book to teach methods of constructing historically correct hats, caps and bonnets for French fashion dolls of the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The methods of assembly taught pertain to styles for dolls of more contemporary periods, as well. Ms. Burke offers instruction in the practical matters of millinery construction; chapters on tools, materials, making bonnet frames and working with straw and felt provide step-by step directions and culminate in the presentation of twelve fully illustrated patterns for making hats, caps and bonnets for lady dolls. Doll costumers, restorers and collectors will find this invaluable compendium an essential resource, while lovers of fashion history will revel in its visual delights.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Nestled at the end of a charming alley on the city's Right Bank, the Muse de la Poupe - Paris has become a mecca for doll collectors from around the world. Co-founded by Samy Odin and his father, Guido Odin, the museums permanent exhibitions feature historically significant dolls of a variety of media made over a span of two centuries. In this stunning book, Samy Odin takes readers on an intimate tour of more than seven hundred of the museums dolls. He reveals the rich provenance of many of the examples he and his father have acquired, identifies previously unknown pieces and explores the mysterious, and fascinating, process by which a top-rate collection is built. In his opening memoir, Mr. Odin tells the story of the serendipitous gift of a damaged bisque doll that started him and his father on their journey as doll collectors in 1981. He traces their steps from that moment to the opening of their first museum in their home in Italy a decade later, and to their arrival in Paris in 1994. Ensuing chapters focus on the major aspects of the Odin collection, from lady dolls to a wide range of bbs, mignonnettes and cloth dolls. Those who have visited the Muse de la Poupe-Paris as well as those who have not yet had this privilege will enjoy lingering over the spectacular color photos, including many close-up views, of its holdings, and reading Mr. Odins insightful comments. This magnificent collection comes to vivid life on these pages, transporting readers to the heart of Paris, where hundreds of fascinating dolls make their home.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. It has been nearly thirty years since any American book has been published on this celebrated Italian doll company. Years of primary research by Lenci expert Nancy Lazenby have resulted in the most comprehensive book ever created, tracing the companys eighty-two-year history and production of fine felt dolls. Based on founder Elena Scavinis unpublished memoirs, interviews with her grand-daughter and with Bibija Garella, one of the last owners of the company, as well as with key people involved in the final decades of Lencis history, this stunning volume also features more than four hundred color photos of dolls and other items made by the company. The full reference section presents detailed photos of specific features by which Lenci dolls can be identified, a visual history of the various tags used from 1919 through 2001 and a close look at a variety of felt dolls often misidentified as Lencis. This beautiful book is an invaluable reference for beginning and advanced collectors alike.
