A Dollmaker's Art also presents a step-by-step photo essay that demonstrates the development of a recent doll from start to finish. Author Louise Fecher, a longtime writer and researcher in the field of contemporary artist dolls and author of Here Come the Bride Dolls, extensively interviewed Ms. Wiley's family, friends, colleagues and critics to create an engaging biographical profile that traces the evolution of this young dynamic artist.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. KNOWN AS the "almost-human" baby doll, Dy-Dee was produced continuously by the Effanbee Doll Company from 1934 through the 1950s, and became one of the most loved baby dolls for several generations of little girls. One of the earliest "drink-and-wet" dolls, she was available in several sizes. Layettes, clothing patterns, furniture and a multitude of accessories were produced for her. In this comprehensive collector's reference, BARBARA CRAIG HILLIKER, author of Bleuette: The Doll and Her Wardrobe, traces Dy-Dee's history, providing identification information for the doll as well as all the materials associated with her, and guidance for cleaning and preservation. A life-size playmate for little girls, 35-inch Patti Playpal was one of the most popular playthings of the early 1960s. Introduced by Ideal in 1959, this vinyl doll was realistically sculpted to resemble a human child by one of the foremost sculptors of the era, Neil Estern, as were the siblings and friendsPeter Playpal, Saucy Walker, Bye Bye Baby, Penny Playpal, Suzy Playpal, Bonnie and Johnny, Shirley Temple and Patti Pattitethat quickly followed. This definitive book traces the history of these dolls, with extensive notes on markings, clothing, hair colors and styles. Other companion dolls of the period, such as the Alexander Doll Company's Joanie, Janie and Timmy, the American Character Doll Company's Betsy McCall family and Ideal's Lori Martin are also discussed. The authors, longtime Patti collectors and experts, collaboratively provide a look at rare examples and outfits, share newly discovered information and present guidelines for caring for, preserving and displaying these dolls. Interviews with Neil Estern and his wife, Anne, who designed many of the dolls' outfits, provide insights into the creation of the doll and the sculpting process; more than 275 breathtaking color photographs celebrate these classic American playthings of an earlier era. The Art of Patti Playpal is sure to appeal to collectors, doll makers and all those who have fond memories of childhood hours spent with Patti Playpal and her family.

From the moment of her introduction in 1905 as a premium for the French girls' magazine, La Semaine de Suzette, until her final appearance in 1960, the appealing doll known as Bleuette was a beloved playmate for French girls of many generations. Unlike the earlier French luxury dolls, Bleuette was created for interactive play and as a teaching tool. The only doll with a written history covering more than fifty years, and an extensive wardrobe of haute-couture costumes, her mission was to instruct little girls in the fine art of becoming proper French ladies. She carried out this mission in the pages of the magazines and catalogs published by Gautier-Languereau, through which she invited girls into a world where they could learn through ,lay. Today collectors around the world have rediscovered the fashionable little doll and her wardrobe. Author Barbara Hilliker, well-known to Bleuette collectors around the world for her publications, lectures and exhibitions, presents the historical and sociological background of this enduring doll, and traces her development and changes in manufacture over the decades. Bleuette's family members and friends, including the beloved nursemaid B, are also featured in this informative volume. An extensively illustrated section on her wardrobe, both the patterns shown in the magazine and the readyto-wear outfits sold through GautierLanguereau's catalogs, is included as well. Patterns adapted by expert seamstress Louise Hedrick from those originally shown in La Semaine de Suzette, including a pattern for the "Costume de quartier-maitre" shown on the cover, introduce the reader to the pleasures of sewing for Bleuette. More than 200 color photos of Bleuette, her family, friends and costumes, as well as original pages from La Semaine do Suzette and other French publications from the doll's history, make this book a visual storehouse of information for beginning and advanced collectors.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The elegant European lady whose collection was visited by Belgian royalty and whose other-than-doll life revolved around the society circles of Brussels, Paris and London, said in an early newspaper interview "I never played with dolls as a child." She came to dolls, she explained, through a love of fashion and an enduring fascination with doll costumes and the history of clothing those dolls personified. However, she clarified, the love of the doll itself soon gained equal footing with the love of costume and she began to seek both throughout Europe. This explains the particular vision of Madame Andree Petyt whose extraordinary collection of rare dolls in exquisite costumes will be sold in two important sessions entitled "A Cherished Collection." It was in the early 1960's that the doll collection of Andree Petyt began. The family members were already noted antique collectors, their curious natures having led them to acquire fine paintings, furniture, porcelains and rare books. The first doll was a casual gift from her husband. But to Andree Petyt this was no simple plaything. It was a study in fashion, it was a porcelain work of art. Her interest aroused, she entered the doll collecting world with zeal, and in a short time her name became known in the doll salons and ateliers throughout Paris and London which were her favorite antique sources. The fifth floor of the Petyt mansion on Avenue Nestor Plissart in an elegant neighborhood of Brussels became her museum, the walls filled with shelves that soon became filled with the finest French and German dolls, and the cupboards filled with drawers and drawers of doll's and children's antique clothing. By 1975 her collection was so notable that she filled an exhibit hall with her choicest pieces, and welcomed the public to view the world of dolls. Among the visitors to this exhibit was the Belgian queen with her children, the young princess and prince. By the end of the century, the collection was among the largest private collections of French dolls existing. At her passing, her family determined to return the cherished collection of Andree Petyt to the loving arms of future collectors.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. When Dr. Carole Jean Stoessel Zvonar tells you that she has collected dolls from the age of 5, she isn't referring to the play dolls that were popular when she was a youngster in the late 1930's. She means that she has always collected antique dolls. "I bought my first antique doll for $1 when I was 5 years old", she said. "Antiques are the only dolls I have ever loved." Her superb French bebes range from a size 16 Bebe Triste by Jumeau to a petite size 3 brown-complexioned E.J. Grand-sized dolls were a particular passion and form an important part of the collection. Of particular interest is a group of wonderful boy's costumes. Examples of decorative automata from French makers will entice collectors with their elegant movements, charming activities, superb costumes, and magnificent faces. And an antic scene that one well be name "Gulliver and the Googlies" highlights just a few of the rare characters from the Zvonar collection. There is also an excellent group of black complexioned dolls that includes rare variations of classic models.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Barnum brought his famed Barnum and Bailey circus to Des Moines, Iowa in the late 19th century, Jumbo the Elephant, reputedly the largest elephant ever known to exist, was the star of the show. The Des Moines performance grounds were rented from a certain Mr. Wesley Redhead, a prominent local businessman, and he and P.T. became fast friends. When the circus was set to depart, P.T. Barnum presented Mr. Redhead with a mechanical toy elephant as a memory of the time. The elephant, made by Roullet of France, lumbered along when wound, and, amusingly flapped his ears, a feature not often found on the later Roullet et Decamps toy elephant. This elephant has remained in the Redhead Family until now, and will be sold at the auction along with photographs and documents about its provenance. Jumbo provides a symbol of childhood as represented by this auction.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. For nearly three decades, this must-see doll and toy museum housed in a splendid baroque building in old Vienna, in which Mozart is said to have once lived, thrilled the thousands of doll collectors who passed through its doors. The legendary collection is the vision of one man, Vaclav Sladky, a native of Czechoslovakia, who escaped the Communist Wall with only one ill- filled suitcase in hand, but with the dream of a new life. His entrance into dolls was accidental, happening upon one bedraggled and forlorn doll at a street flea market, he bought it for pennies, brought it home and saved it. His love of dolls had begun. 10 years later, his pennies saved, and his doll collection grown to an astonishing and splendid array, he realized his dream, to open a childhood museum. The entire contents of the Vienna Puppen & Spielzeug Museum, as well as private dolls from the Sladky collection, will be offered during a two-day auction. For the past forty years when American collectors of dolls, dollhouses and toys have arrived in the beautiful city of Copenhagen in Denmark the first thing they have done is leave. Leave, that is, on the first train heading West, straight for the little town of Billund. For in this town at the Legoland Park was one of Europe's most illustrious antique doll, dollhouse and toy museums, a "must-see" destination for lovers of antique playthings. The Museum, which was located at Legoland Park in Billund, Denmark, was established by Kirk and Edith Christiansen, founders of LEGO toys. In developing their legendary 20th century toy empire, the couple became naturally interested in the 18th and 19th century history of dolls and toys. A relationship with Estrid Faurholt, the early Danish doll collector and researcher, led to their acquisition of her important collection and it was upon this nucleus collection that they built and expanded. The Christiansen collection was housed and exhibited in a private building at Legoland Park in Billund for nearly forty years. As more than one collector noted over those decades, "Children come here for the rides and fun, but the grown-up kids, the collectors, realize that the real treasure of this park is in the Museum. Before I came here, I never imagined the antique rarities that I would find." Although the Museum is now closed, its memory is preserved in this 375 page two-volume boxed catalog with photographs, descriptions and presale estimates of each of the objects. We have also included the Prices Realized at the Auction for the items in this book.

There are the elegant bebes of rich purple skies, and there are the impish rascals so aptly described as "plum delights". These are the dolls of The Lucy Morgan Collection. Nearly 300 rare dolls are included in this book, each photographed in vivid award-winning color photographs, and each fully described with historical references, attributions, dates and estimated values. A useful index will guide the collector to dolls of particular interest. The book is a treasure for every doll lover and a testament to the proclamation that the doll is, indeed, art. Is it only children that play with dolls? Theriault's offers clues to these tantalizing questions in a delightful auction on Sunday, July 9, 2006 that teasingly word-plays on the courtly theme, while offering a plentitude of dolls that are fit for a princess. There are the exceptionally rare pair of dolls actually from the 18th century French court whose purpose was not child's play, but a manner for aristocrats to theatrically spread the latest gossip without really naming names, from the private collection of the late esteemed Parisian antiquarian Claude Detave. There are the grand wooden dolls of the English court from the collection of the American early collector, Madeline Merrill, and documented in her book The Art of Dolls. There is an exceptional 26 wooden Grodnertal doll, also from the Merrill Collection, that surely once belonged in the play room of a young German or Austrian duchess, and other early wooden and paper mache dolls whose grand size, rare style, or extensive trousseau surely suggests their early home in a grand court. These are only a few of the exceptional dolls found within this beautiful full-color catalog.

The first-ever American auction to entirely feature the French phenomena named Bleuette is the content of this book whose focus includes 50 different models of the doll, along with more than 150 different costumes and accessories. Created in 1905, Bleuette now celebrates her 100th birthday. The little doll was presented by the prestigious French publishing house, Gautier-Languereau, and was only available from them through subscription to their children's magazine La Semaine de Suzette. So wildly successful was the little doll in its 1905 initial presentation that she was quickly sold-out, and variations on the original model appeared. At first Gautier-Languereau offered sewing patterns for the doll in their magazine, but quickly they saw the potential in offering ready-made clothing. It is those dolls, their costumes, and their catalogs that collectors seek in all their infinite variety.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Readers will find this book informative and fascinating reading about French doll history of the 19th century up to 1925. This time period encompasses the pre-industrial era, the Industrial Revolution, the dawning of the 20th century, and post WWI. No doll firm survived throughout that entire period, although several lasted for half a century or more. But today's collector is looking for more than fascinating reading. The need is for knowledge about the dolls that one owns or wish-es to acquire. This is the hard part. In fact, the history of dolls in 19th century France is complicated and that fact underlies this two-volume work. Thousands of references to doll firms, inventors, stores, and actual dolls are arranged alphabetically within the 750 pages of this work enabling collectors for the first time to research and document their antique doll treasures. Photographs or illustrations of marks, illustrations from original patent drawings, and actual advertisements from contemporary business registries accompany most entries. There are, of course, superb photographs of existing examples of actual dolls, many previously undocumented. Well-indexed, more than 4000 illustrations and color photographs. Table of Contents: - The authors of the long-out-of-print German Doll Encyclopedia have been hard at work for the past decade. They are the publishers of Cieslik's Puppenmagazin, named "The best doll magazine in the world" at an international doll conference in Paris, France. Unfortunately, that magazine was published in the German language and its wonderful research was a "closed book" to English language collectors. Its exceptional research will change many notions of "who made what" as well as solve many old mysteries. This is a must-have book for any serious collector. Great human-interest reading, too, for lovers of history. Early wooden dolls, Liepzig doll doctor, Holiday toy displays, Maquette, Lithopanes, Cat Dolls, Oracle Dolls, Asian dolls, Native American dolls, snowbabies, Half-Dolls, and Piano Babies are all included in this amazing book.
