We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. In 1870, Leon Casimir Bru described his wooden-bodied poupee as having "a fully perfected grace". It is a phrase that aptly describes the entire world of the French fashion doll, 1850-1880. The French doll industry of 1850 consisted of dark and gloomy little workshops and stores tucked in hidden alleyways. By 1880, all had changed. Large manufactories controlled the market. Exports thrived. And magnificent stores and boutiques offered an unparalleled wealth of dolls, doll costumes, accessories and furnishing. This blossoming was fostered by the social revolution that took place in Paris during the Napoleon III era. During his 22-year reign that French ruler and his beloved wife, the Empress Eugenie, transformed Paris into a city of wide boulevards, magnificent parks and buildings, and glorious fairs and expositions. The fashion doll came along for the ride. Her world reflected the greater world. What was made for real people, however frivolous or luxurious its nature, was also made for the doll. By 1867, there were more than 200 shops in Paris specializing in the fashion doll and her world. From garters to gowns, gaiters to gloves, hoops to hat boxes, little doll owners of that period could find it all. Yet, today, few objects remain from that glorious era. Given the nature of child play, and the tiny size of these objects, it is understandable. It must be the goal of today's collectors to identify and preserve those few remaining examples. This book will help in that quest.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. This lovely little Kewpie Doll with blue wings, side glancing painted eyes, and closed smiling mouth with jointed arms is marked on the back: Nippon and on the bottom: Made in Japan.

Antique Nippon porcelain, as this china was called during the period from the 1890's through the early 1920's, denoted country of origin rather than products from a specific manufacturer. Nippon is the anglicized word for Japan or land of the rising sun.

After the early 1920's, the more English Made in Japan began to appear, mandated by The United States requirement of Japan instead of Nippon for the sake of clarity for American readers.

However, other countries made no such demand, and Nippon appears on many products after that date.

In 1909, illustrator and artist Rose O’Neill had a dream about plump little creatures she called Kewpies, short for Cupid. Cupid gets you into trouble and the Kewpies get you out, explained O’Neill. The purpose of these creatures is to perform good deeds in a funny way. They were often seen battling injustice or promoting women's suffrage, and they always made the reader laugh.

As the drawings became more familiar, O'Neill created Kewpie Kutouts. These paper dolls had both a front and a back side, and were accompanied by short stories. O’Neill next created comic pages, which were printed in several newspapers. The Kewpie doll was born in 1913 these first dolls had straight posture with their arms at their sides.

They were made from bisque or china and celluloid. As the Kewpies grew in popularity, so did the different kinds, sizes and materials of the dolls. Kewpie dolls were made in different positions, and came with a variety of outfits and accessories. To cash in on this Kewpie Dolls market Japan and Germany began making them as well.

In very good + condition without chips, cracks or fleabites her ruddy complexion does show dirt marks, which I have shown in my pictures, that I will leave to the new owner to clean and it measures 4 1/2 inches tall, 2 1/2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep.
