Figurines: Emmett Kelly Jr. Clowns

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Figurines: Emmett Kelly Jr. Clowns?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
This wonderful figurine, The Wallstreet Journal, comes from The Original Emmett Kelly Circus Collection and is marked: DGC 86 (A Dave Grossman Creation) / Ltd.Ed.#4493 / 15,000 / Made in Taiwan. Emmett Leo Kelly (December 9, 1898 – March 28, 1979), a native of Sedan, Kansas, was an American circus performer, who created the memorable clown figure Weary Willie, based on the hobos of the Depression era. He started working as a clown full-time in 1931. Weary Willie was a tragic figure: a clown, who could usually be seen sweeping up the circus rings after the other performers. He tried but failed to sweep up the pool of light of a spotlight. His routine was revolutionary at the time.

From 1942–1956 Kelly performed with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, where he was a major attraction, though he took the 1956 season off to perform as the mascot for the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. He also landed a number of Broadway and film roles, including the role of Willie in Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). He also appeared in the Bertram Mills Circus. Emmett Kelly died at the age of 80 of a heart attack on March 28, 1979, at his home in Sarasota, Florida.

His son Emmett Kelly, Jr. performed in public appearances nationwide until his death in 2006, at the age of 83.

In very good + condition he measures 5 1/8 inches tall, 3 inches wide and 3 inches deep. An addition to any Emmett Kelly Collection.

SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have questions please contact me and thank you for looking.  Figurine, Ynez, Prudence, 6 1/4" tall by 4 1/2" wide; this Ynez is also a great example of the artist's fine work. The pottery was located in Inglewood, CA and operated between 1948 and 1953. This lady, with the blonde hair, is leaning forward curtseying. Her white dress is beautifully decorated with blue bows, pink roses and beautiful ivory spaghetti lace all around the front. The figure has overall light crazing; there are no chips or cracks. Other than some tiny little paint flakes on two bows, it's in good vintage condition . It is marked "Prudence by Ynez".  This beautifully crafted figurine, Spirit of Christmas 1 figurine, of the worlds most famous clown Emmett Kelly Jr. is the First of a series to come out by Flambro Imports.

When Emmett Kelly, Jr. was born on November 13, 1923 in Dyersburg, Tennessee, it was the closing-day performance for the John Robinson Circus; the circus which employed his father to entertain young and old alike as the clown/mime Weary Willie. For the first few years of his life, young Emmett traveled with his parents on the circus circuit becoming a veteran of life on the road. When Emmett finished school, World War II was being fought. At the age of 18 Kelly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent almost three years in the Pacific participating in major operations in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Although he was raised under the Big Top, he chose to pursue a career as an automotive mechanic and railroad switch tender after the war ended. Fifteen years later, Kelly answered the call of circus life and clowning when he debuted at the 1960 Circus Festival in Peru, Indiana. There, for the first time, encouraged and trained by his father, he donned the Weary Willie costume and make-up and portrayed the lovable mime. In every performance, Emmett Kellly, Jr. presented the famous Sweeping the Spotlight routine which has become a pantomime classic. Emmett Kelly, Jr. died of complications of pneumonia on Wednesday November 29, 2006 in Sierra Vista, Arizona at the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center which is near his home in Tombstone, Arizona.

I had the privilege of meeting him and having him sign this piece in person, I've also enclosed pictures of the signing, at the Limited Edition in Merrick, Long Island, New York. What a day that was not only to be able to meet Emmett Kelly Jr. in person but to be made such a fuss over when I took this rarely found piece out of my bag and was rushed to the beginning of the line. Actually, that day he signed 2 pieces for me. I am the original owner and this piece was out of it's box 3 times. The Christmas I received it December 25,1984, the day he signed it and the day I took the measurments to add it to my shop. Everything is original, the box it came in, the shipping box and the attached label and booklet. An excellent piece it measures 7 3/4 inches long, 9 3/4 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide without the wood display base which measures 1 inch deep, 8 inches wide and 11 1/4 inches long. The Limited Edition number is 2764 out of 3500 pieces made. A wonderful addition to any Flambro Import, Clown Figurine or Emmett Kelly Jr. Figurine Collection.

SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me and thank you for looking.  Figurine, Ynez, Girl Holding Doll. 6 1/2" tall by 4" wide, this Ynez is also a great example of the artist's fine work. The pottery was located in Inglewood, CA and operated between 1948 and 1953. This girl, with the reddish brown hair, is holding a doll. There is a white bow in the back of her peplum securing it over a pretty yellow dress. Her dress is decorated in a brown design. CONDITION: There is overall crazing, three little paint flakes, a little lace damage and the head has been reglued. Because of its condition, the price has been greatly reduced. It is marked "Ynez" on the bottom.
