Figurines: Sebastian

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Figurines: Sebastian?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
This Sebastian Miniature Figurine, Girl Skating, SML-370 from the Sidewalk Days Series, was made 1976 through 1978 and is marked: COPR 1978 / P.W.Baston. She has a green label on the bottom and is numbered #2582 out of 10,000 made.

Sebastian Miniatures, Folks in Little, had its birth in early 1938 when Prescott Woodbury Baston was commissioned to design a set of figurines for the Shaker Glen House restaurant in Woburn, Massachusetts. The pieces, depicting a Shaker couple, so impressed the owner of the restaurant that she ordered four dozen to sell and give away to guests, and a short time later ordered a thousand more! The success of the figurines led to the launch of Sebastian Miniatures in March of 1939. (Why Sebastian and not Baston? It sounded better!) By the time Baston passed away in 1984, his son Prescott Woody Baston, Jr. had taken over as designer.

Between 1938 and 2008 an estimated 1000 different figurines had been marketed. The hand-painted pieces can be grouped according to topic - historic personages, literary characters, different occupations, pets, holidays, etc., or series, Dickens, Civil War, Lighthouse, etc. Many were withdrawn from production, only to be reissued several years later with variations in color and markings.

In very good + condition without chips, cracks or fleabites she measures 3 3/4 inches tall, 2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep.

Sebastian Miniature, Lobsterman, is nearly 3" tall, and carries the Baston name and copyright information on the side of the base. This piece was introduced in 1947. Until the mid-1940’s, before the lobster market was developed as a gourmet delight, New England lobsters were "the poor man’s food." A proud New Englander would hide the lobster shells in the garbage so neighbors wouldn’t know they couldn’t afford better. This piece is free of chips and cracks. Although there is a little flaking of paint on the side of the Lobsterman’s left arm, it’s in excellent shape.  Sebastian Miniature, Madonna of Goldfinch, is nearly 3" tall. She’s patterned after Raphael’s painting of the Florentine Madonna period which now hangs in the Vatican. The Madonna is with Jesus while John the Baptist pets a tiny Goldfinch. Both the title and copyright information are embedded in the side of the base. She dates from 1951 and is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. The paint is also excellent.  Sebastian Miniature Santa Claus is 3.75" tall, and he seems quite at home, sitting under a street lamp with a little girl on his knee. The Marblehead Sticker is on the base, and the copyright information is embedded on the rim. It dates from 1948, following the appearance of "Miracle on 34th Street" in the 1947 Christmas season. Macy’s department store, featured in the film, asked Baston to design a Santa, and this is the result. It’s in excellent shape with no chips, cracks, or other damage. The paint is also great. A wonderful piece for a wonderful season!

Ms Pickwick’s name is on the top of the base. This piece dates from 19463 to 1953. There are no chips, although there is a little paint loss on the rim of the hat, and on the edge of the coat. The price has been lowered from $54 to $44 because of the paint loss on this Marblehead.

Sebastian Weaver is 3" tall, and on the side rim of the base are the words: "Copr. 1951 P. W. Baston. Also on the rim is the complete title of this piece: "Weaver and Loom." This is a Marblehead piece, made between 1951-1975. It’s in wonderful shape. There are no chips or cracks, and the color is quite good! The bottom sticker has long since been lost.  Sebastian Miniature Shawmut Indian in Bronze is 3.75" tall, with its copyr 1961 embedded in the back, along with Shawmut. The bottom is covered in brown felt. It’s an impressive piece, with no damage of any kind. It’s in excellent condition.  Sebastian Miniature Sitzmark Skier is 1.5 tall and designed in 1948 for distribution in Baston’s gift shops. The problem was that ski fashions changed too rapidly, and Sitzmark was discontinued in 1950. Baston would have had to change his molds every year and sales did not warrant the expense. It is a Marblehead piece with no chips, cracks or other damage. It has long since lost its sticker, but it’s unmistakable!  Sebastian Miniature "Dahl Fisherman" is 2.75" tall, and his title is inscribed on the top of the base. Just look at that fish he’s holding! This little guy is a crusty pipe=smoking Yankee fisherman stepping from his boat and lugging a large codfish. The figurine was sold by Stearns and other Boston gift stores, beginning in 1947. He is in excellent + condition, but lost his sticker many, many years ago. He is a Marblehead.

Sebastian Miniature Collector Society plaque dates from 1980, and it was signed by Preston W Baston. It carries the yellow Sebastian sticker. Free of chips, cracks and other damage, it’s in wonderful shape with great detailing through the brushed browns of shading. The © mark appears on the side.  Sebastian Miniature Tom Sawyer is 2.75" tall and carries a © of 1948 P W Baston. He’s in wonderful shape, along with the fence and the cat. This piece has the characteristic brown shellac of the Marblehead pieces, and could certainly use white-washing, if you wanted it to be white. It looks great as it is, however, with excellent paint throughout. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. Just a small slice of America in beautiful condition.  Sebastian Miniatures Swedish Boy and Girl were produced in 1948, during the Marblehead era, and only 500 were made of each. They show typical Marblehead yellowing, and they have great paint, although the pictures tended to glare it out a bit. The Swedish girl dancer has a tiny chip on the rim of the base, and while there is no chip on the end of her cap, there is a paint skip there. There are no stickers on the base, but the name is embedded around the base, along with copyright 1946. The Gold Book, put out in 2001 by the Sebastian Miniatures Club, shows their price to be $150 to $175 each – or $300 to $350. My price, however, is only half of the lowest price -- $150 for both!  Sebastian miniature George and Martha Washington – two separate figures and bases, 2.75" tall and 2.5" tall. Both have their titles incised in the base, and both are Marblehead, although the originals stickers are long gone. For years, my husband and I searched for the perfect George and Martha Washington figures – but George’s gun was so short, that we were sure that the tip had been broken off. We finally discovered, from the Sebastian Miniatures book by Johnson, that the gun stock was supposed to be that short! There are no chips or cracks on either of this pair, and the paint on both is great!

Sebastian miniatures Malvolio is 3.25" tall and dates from 1950. The P W Baston mark is incised in the side of the base, along with the copyrite date of 1950. There is a remnant of a white, rectangular label There are no chips or cracks, but he has lost a little paint at one spot in his hair, and there appears to be a slight paint rub on his hose. The hair could be easily retouched since it’s not a solid color, but since I’m not in the retouching business, I’ll leave that for you to do. There are no chips or cracks, and the rest of the paint is great! If you’re interested, the story of Malvolio follows.

Malvolio is the steward of Countess Olivia in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and here is that story.. Malvolio is Olivia’s steward. He is a pompous fool who secretly aspires to be her love. Annoyed by his conceit, others concoct a scheme to turn Olivia against him. A letter is forged in her handwriting, leading him to believe she returns his love. He is conned into smiling continuously, wear cross garters and yellow, the color she abhors. When Oliva shows astonishment at his absurb behaviour, he keeps quoting parts of the letter until he is shut up in a dark room as a lunatic.   Sebastian Miniature Elizabeth Monroe is nearly 3" tall and holding a bouquet of red flowers. Her name appears on the base, along with copr 1945, and P W Baston. She’s a marvelous example of the Marblehead years. There are a few scattered spots where the paint has been rubbed off, but she is free of chips, cracks or other damage. Made in the USA  Sebastian Miniature Annie Oakley is nearly 3" tall and is holding tight to her rifle! She dates from 1948, has her title on the base, and has the copyright date of 1948 there also, along with P. W. Baston. With her little blue eyes and white hat, she’s in wonderful Marblehead condition. She is free of chips, cracks and other damage. Even her paint is wonderful! Made in the USA  Sebastian Pioneer Couple, Marblehead, is a miniature work of art, 3.5" tall. It was produced between 1958 and 1975. It has the true Marblehead browned lacquer, and it’s in superb shape. There are no chips, cracks or damage of any kind. The paint is fanstastic! This piece is mint.

Sebastian Miniature Elizabeth Monroe $42.00

This is A Sebastian Miniature called Mark Twain, The Thinker. The piece is marked with an impression at the base as well as an original paper label.

This piece is about 2.25 inches tall and about 1.675 inches wide. It is marked with a copyright date of 1960 and is designed by Prescott W. Baston of Marblehead, Mass.  Sebastian Miniatures, Mr. and Mrs. Beacon Hill, date from 1947 when R H Stearns Co, the most lavish Boston department store at that time, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1847. The store commission a cartoonist for the Boston Herald newspaper to caricature typical Bostonians, and Mr. and Mrs. Beacon Hill were produced. Mr. Beacon Hill is proceeding across the Boston Common with his umbrella and green baize bag, surrounded by squirrels and pigeons. Mrs. Beacon Hill is waiting "under the clock at R H Sterns." She carries the inevitable umbrella. Each has the Baston mark on the edge of the base. Both have their names on the top of the bases. Made only in the Marblehead era, each lists for $70 to $85 in the 2001 Edition of the Gold Book. Other than slight paint wear on the umbrellas, bags, and hats, they are in great shape. There are no chips, cracks or damage.

Sebastian Miniature Shawmut Indian was produced in 1964 in a limited edition of 25,000. He represents Chief Obbatinewat from the Indian Tribe that once inhabited the area around Boston. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. There is a tiny amount of paint wear on the side edges, but there is a green felt mat on the bottom. His red feather is in perfect condition. He’s in excellent shape.

Sebastian Miniature Trout Fisherman - Down Stream is nearly 3.5" tall, from the bottom of the base to the top of the fishing line. He was produced between 1947-1975. Due to the slight yellowing of the varnish, I believe him to be a Marblehead. There are no chips or damage of any kind. He is in excellent shape.

This is Version 1 of Cleopatra, made between 1950-1962. There are no chips or damage of any kind. Even her paint is great!  Sebastian miniature Pocahontas has been found! Here she is - 2.5" tall and in wonderful condition. There are no chips, cracks or repairs, and while she has no Sebastian Marblehead sticker on the base, she is truly vintage Marblehead era as none of these were made during the Lance period. Made only between 1940-1958. There is a little paint wear on one side of her nose, but the rest of the paint job is great.  Sebastian miniatures Henry VIII (3" tall) and Anne Boleyn (nearly 4" tall)- what a pair! Anne dates from the Marblehead era, as evidenced by her dark varnish and name incisure on top of the base. Henry VIII was produced as the 1984 member figure. Neither has a Sebastian sticker. Both, however, are in extremely excellent condition with no chips, cracks or damage. The paint on each is also excellent.   Sebastian miniature Captain John Smith, nearly 3" tall, was produced between 1940 - 1958, the Marblehead era. It’s in marvelous shape, with no chips, cracks or paint wear. Although the varnish has turned brown, as in all true Marblehead pieces, the paint is still bright and shiny. He’s just waiting to join your collection!

Sebastian Miniatures had its birth in early 1938 when Prescott Woodbury Baston was commissioned to design a set of figurines for the Shaker Glen House restaurant in Woburn, Massachusetts.

The hand-painted pieces can be grouped according to topic - historic personages, literary characters, different occupations, pets, holidays, etc. - or series - Dickens, Civil War, Lighthouse, etc. Many were withdrawn from production, only to be reissued several years later with variations in color and markings.

In good + condition it does have a chipped book he is holding, which I have shown in my pictures and it measures 4 5/8 inches tall, 3 3/4 inches wide and 1 3/4 inches deep.

An addition to any Sebastian Miniature Collection.
