For sale is a footed vase molded in amethyst glass featuring a frieze of six classical Roman female musicians, having antique embellishments (DONE AT THE FACTORY) such as chips and scratches and obvious imperfections in the glass to simulate a piece of early Roman glass. There is a green tinting to areas of the vase. I believe this was done to simulate a piece that was unearthed. The vase is manufactured by Daum Nancy for George De Feure and dates to approximately 1910. Vase has a molded signature to the underside (hard to see clearly). Vase stands approximately 5 1/2 inches tall and the diameter of the top is approximately 4 3/4 inches. The vase is in excellent condition considering it was purposely manufactured to appear it was much older than it was. Tiffany was also producing pieces that simulated pieces that were made much earlier. Shipping with insurance will be $16.00 in the Continental USA.  Colorful glass bowl with reverse image on bottom. Design of three orange flowers against a green and blue background.

Embossed France on bottom.

This piece is free of chips, cracks or other defects.

A vase of this type was exhibited by Baccarat at the Paris Exposition Universelle, 1878. For further examples of Japanese-influenced intaglio-engraved or [rock-crystal style] glass made for the Exposition, see D.Sautot, Baccarat. Une manufacture Française, pp.64-67.

From the 1970s, this Saint Louis (France) double old fashioned glass was produced and sold as a single crystal glass and presented in a box decorated as a drum. Unfortunately the box is gone but this unused glass measuring 4.5" high is in mint condition - Saint Louis stamp on bottom with original sticker on side. It is clear and features a simple, elegant vertical cut design.... a handsome gentleman's gift! (I appologize for the photos, please let me know if you need additional shots)  decorated with raised opaque enamels and transparent enamels on acid cut back Islamic design with an acid cut back ogival cartouch on each side depicting Islamic horsemen and framed by undecorated plain arches of glass, further enhanced with a band of leaves and flowerheads on thin scrolling tendrils on bands surroundind both top and bottom of the flask, the ogival shape is repeated in the opening at the top, signed in script underneath Emile Galle, Nancy, Depose, and #6 [see image] missing stopper otherwise perfect.

Islamic or Persian or Egyptian style enameled glass by Galle is extremely rare and has brought record prices at London sales rooms for several years now.

Emile Gallé (1846-1904) was the foremost glassmaker of his day. In 1874 he took over the running of the Gallé factory in Nancy from his father and immediately began to expand the business, proving himself an outstanding businessman as well as a designer of genius. His creations were exhibited at the great exhibitions and world fairs in Paris, Chicago and Saint Louis and were keenly collected by the most notable collectors of the day including Roger Marx, the editor of Gazette des beaux-arts, the industrialist Edouard Hannon, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Russian and Danish royal families (Carboni, S., and D. Whitehouse, Glass of the Sultans, New York, 2001, p.299).

Gallé began to experiment with enamelling on glass in the late 1870s, drawing on the rich repertory of Ayyubid-Mamluk luxury glass whilst expanding on its decorative and chromatic range. In a statement to the jury of the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889 he wrote: [Since 1878, I have devoted myself continually to developing a palette that would allow me to decorate glass with the aid of colours and low-temperature vitrifiable enamels... I also developed reflecting colours by mixing them with hard Arabian enamels. Finally in 1884, I produced for the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs a new series of transparent enamels in relief... I therefore present you today with the results of my continued research: opaque enamels with artificial and bizarre colours, muted nuances designed to add some 'spice' to an already impressive array of colour.] (W. Warmus, Emile Gallé: Dreams into Glass, Corning, New York, 1984, p.185). The red colour found on this bottle is an example of one of the new spicy hues developed by Gallé.

Gallé must have seen Mamluk originals during his travels in Germany as well as in his native France. The motif of the mounted horsemen is consistent with figural types on Ayyubid-Mamluk enamelled wares of the thirteenth century (as well as conforming to what we know of the actual practices of the Turkish and Mongol cavalry). Gallé adapted these iconic forms and arrived at something bold, original and vibrant.

If you collect early Galle do not let this one slip by.

The elderly lady I purchased the box from told me that it was given to her from an aunt who had traveled to Europe in the early 1950s and purchased it in France. The lady was not sure if the box was purchased new or in a second hand shop but it is never the less well over 50 years old. The lid and the base are attached together by what appears to be a gold plated decorative band and hinge. The box stands approximately 4 inches tall and the diameter of the box is approximately 2 1/2 inches. The box is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. The metal has discolored in areas consistent with its age. Shipping with insurance will be $15.00 in the Continental USA.   A lovely cameo glass vase by Muller Freres.
