One Christmas evening, a group of friends set off to enjoy a dinner of celebration at a small country inn nestled in a quiet river town. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw the small, old-fashioned village decorated for the holidays. The lights, like fairies, glowed and sparkled amid the freshly fallen snow. All evening, the conversation was full of Christmas memories and the visions the tiny town had evoked. Amidst the jovial banter and magical memories, the idea for a lighted Christmas village was born. That spark of an idea became a reality when, in 1976, Department 56 introduced a series of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings. The rest is history.

Now headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Department 56 has become a leader in the giftware, collectibles and holiday decorating industry and is best known for our hand-crafted lighted villages, Snowbabie figurines and extensive lines of holiday and home decorative products.

For their Heritage Village Collection, Dicken's Village Series, it is very colorful with a tan and white building with green trim, brown roadside fish bins, green and yellow bay windows and brown door. This is 1 of the 5-piece set Merchant Shops. The other four pieces are called: Poulterer, Watchmaker (Geo. Weeton), White Horse Bakery, and Walpole Tailors.

In very good + condition, without chips, cracks or fleabites, it comes in it's original box and cardboard sleeve that shows wear and it measures 6 3/4 inches tall, 6 1/4 inches wide and 4 1/2 inches deep.

An addition to any Department 56 Heritage Village Collection.

This vintage gold glass kugel Christmas ornament with heavy brass top was made in Germany according to my Christmas Through The Decades Book by Robert Brenner and was made in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

Holiday trees in 1840 were adorned with apples, gilded and natural fruits and nuts, cookies, popcorn and cranberries, as well as homemade paper items, candles, cornucopias, and presents. It was during this decade that the first commercially produced Christmas decorations appeared. In 1848, the first glass ornament, a kugel, appeared in Germany. The kugel was a large hollow ball ranging in size from 1 inch to 18 inches. Smaller ones were used for tree decorations. The blown, molded, figural glass ornaments that we are familiar with today evolved from the tradition of blowing kugels. These ornaments were not sold in America until 1880.

Kugel is a German word that means ball. Collectors used this term to describe any early thick glass ornament with a decorative cap. Early Kugels were too heavy to hang on tree branches; instead, they were suspended from the ceiling. Soon after their invention, the Germans decided small Kugels should adorn tree boughs. Shapes such as grapes, berry clusters, apples and pears became popular. F. W. Woolworth is given credit for bringing Kugels to America in the 1880s. His initial investment of $25 turned into sales of at least $25 million worth of Kugels over the next several years.

In very good condition it does have a loose cap and age discoloration, which I have shown in my pictures and it measures 2 1/2 inches high and 2 1/4 inches wide. An addition to any Antique Kugel Christmas Ornament Collection.

SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If You have questions please contact me and thank you for looking.

This pretty 14k Claddagh ring has 5 small gemstones - 2 light blue, 2 amethyst & 1 dark blue. It is nicely molded. A size 8 1/2, it is a comfortable fit. The Claddagh motif of hands, heart & crown symbolize love, friendship & loyalty as it has for hundreds of years in the village of Claddagh near Galway, Ireland.

Worn on the right hand it shows the wearers heart if open to love. Worn on the left hand, her heart is spoken for.

This probably why these are often called "Irish Wedding Rings".

It shows very little wear. Excellent condition.  This set of 2 cardboard King's Christmas Ornaments are marked: Made in Japan.

From the 1970s they are very good condition and quite colorful.

One is blue with green, gold, magenta and gold trim with a gold felt beard while the other is red with green, gold, magenta and gold trim with a white felt beard.

75 Jingle bells made in U.S.A. by the Criterion Bell & Specialty Co., Inc. – Brooklyn N.Y.

55 are still wired on two original cards and 10 larger bells are loose. 55 of the bells are gold color and 15 are a silver color. The smaller ones are marble sized, and the larger size is about an inch in height. There are no bar codes on packages, so I’d assume these to be older bells, however they do have zip codes so would date to after 1963, and the company is still in operation per my Google search. Card says for use on: Gift packages, Trees, Toys, Costumes, Shoes, Hobby Crafts and Home Décor.

This 1986 Department 56 Thomas Kersey Coffee House building #6591-9 from the Dickens Village Series is marked: Made in Taiwan / R.O.C.

Retired in 1989 it is in very good + condition, without chips cracks or fleabites, comes in it's original styrofoam covering with cord and it measures 6 1/4 inches tall, 5 inches wide and 5 inches deep. A wonderful addition to any Department 56 Collection.

The bottom opens and can be filled with candy or a small gift and hung on the tree. Not certain how old it is but it looks to have some age on it. Will be a nice addition to an ornament collection or to use as a gift.

With the original paper label on the bottom with the Department 56 Logo it is in very good + condition and measures 2 1/2 inches tall, 4 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches deep. I have two of these ornaments in stock. Price quoted is for each one ordered.

An addition to any Department 56 Christmas Ornament Collection.
