Metalware

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Metalware?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
This antique solid copper 1800s water kettle is massive compared to modern kettles - I measured out six quarts of water and it still didn't come all the way up to the rim. It's very attractive as well, with embossed teardrop or flower petal designs around the upper shoulder. The kettle is 6-1/2" high to the rim, not including the lid, about 11-1/2" high to the top of the handle when raised. It measures 9-1/4" diameter across the bottom.

The handle and hinged mountings are cast iron with a wood grip. One mounting has partially separated from the kettle, it's still firmly in place but there's a crack to the metal underneath. The spout has been re-soldered at the base and the repair held - the kettle does not leak. The bottom has some fireplace carbon deposits and scorch marks but they're not heavy. There are a few small dents and dings as you can see but for its age I think it's held up remarkably well, and the patina is wonderful. I find no markings, which is typical for a mid 19th Century American piece like this.

There is such magnificent detailing on this miniature 3 1/4 inch in diameter bronze and cloisonné treatment medallion that resembles the intricate workings of an Amish quilting design. The band of metal hearts and circles that surround the outside edging is done in a golden amber color.

Going toward the center of the medallion, there are larger hearts, circles, and swirls enameled in jade green, deep blue and amber color enamel. At the center, there is a design of a flower petal in amber and the blue.

Description really doesn’t do justice to the fine handiwork embodied in the design pattern. This medallion needs to be seen up close and personal. A pierced opening on the backside has a looped copper wire in place making this vintage cloisonné piece ready for display. Embossed on the backside are Kallitechniki, Takoyssi, Moschato Greece.  Approx. 1" by 3/4", circa early to mid 1900s, brass, no key present, nice patina unpolished, sold as found, would polish up brightly if desired by the purchaser, very good condition, would be great to repurpose and use on a bracelet or necklace or art piece.   Arts & Crafts movement hammered pewter cream and sugar for Liberty’s of London. Carries the English Pewter mark, and has distinctive simple good looks. Creamer is 13 cm wide handle to handle, and 8.7 cm high. The creamer is 10 cm wide handle to spout and 7.8 cm high (5.1/8 inches by 3.7/16 inch and about 4 inches by 3.1/16 inch). The only fault is a compressed footrim under the spout side of the jug. Very good pewter patina.

Silver-plated pineapple trivet, with protective rubber feet and hook for hanging.  8-3/4 inch solid metal figurine of a salesman carrying a briefcase under his arm and walking at full stride, he is on a base and there is a bolt below, so not sure what he was originally attached to – is rather like a hood ornament type piece, perhaps some very heavy (2-1/2 pounds) presentation award. It is signed underneath the base: Salesman  Old round copper kettle - perfect camping kettle or ship’s kettle. Measures 20 cm diameter and about 15 cm high (8 inches by 6 inches). Very good condition - just needs elbow grease to clean it up.

Ejector has seized up, probably could be freed. Otherwise excellent condition.  Fans of those old CB radios, here’s a belt buckle just for you! Breaker-Breaker is above the radio design, with 10-4 to the left, and Come On on the right hand side. There is a raised blank medallion that could be used to engrave a name or saying below the radio.

Great condition, sold as found, cleaning and polishing optional for the buyer.  This set of short pewter candle stick holders has nice detail. Condition is very good with nice patina. Measures 2.5 inches high.  This silver inlaid souvenir teaspoon from the Hotel Gross in Bonn, Germany, is marked: PAT. 04 / Holmes and Edwards IS (International Silver Company) / Silver Inlaid. The marking has all X's from beginning to end as if it was canceled out.

The terms Sterling Inlay and Sterling Inlaid were used by the Holmes and Edwards Company from late Victorian times until the brand was abandoned by International Silver in the 1960's. The successor brand, Deepsilver, also was made this way. Flatware would have a small block of sterling set into the piece at the wear points where the piece would rest on the table. This was a method of making the wear less visible. The term and practice has confused people ever since.

The International Silver Company, an amalgamation of fourteen independent silverware manufacturers, was formed in 1898. Immediately upon organization, the company bought the total capital stock of the following companies: Barbour Silver Company (Hartford), Holmes & Edwards Silver Company (Bridgeport), Manhattan Silver Plate, (Lyons, New York), Meriden Britannia Company (Meriden), Norwich Cutlery (Norwich), William Rogers Manufacturing Company (Hartford), Rogers Cutlery (Hartford), Rogers and Brothers (Waterbury), Rogers and Hamilton (Waterbury), Wilcox Silver Plate (Meriden), Watrous Manufacturing Company (Wallingford), Standard Silver Company, Ltd. (Toronto, Canada).

During the first six months of 1899, an additional four were purchased. Derby Silver Company (Derby), Simpson, Hall, Miller & Company (Wallingford), Simpson Nickel Company (Wallingford), Middletown Plate Company (Middletown).

In 1968, International Silver became part of Insilco, A group of private investors purchased World Tableware in 1983 and organized the American Silver Company.

Its operations centered at Meriden, Connecticut, would prove to be the major producer of silver products in the United States.

This vintage silver plated demitasse spoon has a logo on the front with the initial S in it and is marked on the back: International Silver Co. / B.P. / Hotel Statler.

Located at 401 7th Avenue in Manhattan, across the street from Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden, the hotel was acquired by the Hotels Statler Company in 1949 and renamed the New York Statler Hotel. Following the sale of all 17 Statler hotels to Conrad Hilton in 1954, the hotel became The Statler Hilton. It operated under this name until the early 1980s, when Hilton sold the hotel and it again became The New York Statler for a brief period, before joining the now-defunct Penta chain in 1984, becoming The New York Penta. Finally, in 1992, it reverted to the Hotel Pennsylvania.

Measuring a large 20 x 10 7/16 inches, this Lodge reversible griddle has a smooth surface on one side and a ribbed surface on the reverse side to do meats such as bacon and sausage, where you’ll be searing off fat during the cooking process.

Lodge cast iron products are well-made, pre-seasoned with a soy based vegetable oil and tempered in a hot oven to infuse the cast iron and make it ready to cook with great results.

The manufacturer suggests cooking over a double burner with this griddle so that the heat is distributed evenly throughout the surface. The griddle can also be safely used in your oven, if so desired. Clean-up is easily taken care of with hot water and a scrub brush – no need for soap or detergents. This professional size Lodge griddle comes new in its original box, and would be terrific for home or for camping.

This is a very heavy piece, weighing 14 pounds before packaging. The recommended shipping method would is through UPS Ground.  Measuring 9 1/2 inches from the small front wheels to the end of the back wheels and standing 6 inches tall, this tin metal tractor is sure to be a terrific focal display and conversation piece. Old MacDonald Had A Farm is the song that plays when you wind the key mechanism at the back of the tractor.

If you live and work on a farm, or just enjoy that country look, this musical tractor might be just the thing for you. Well-crafted with fine detailing, this tractor, carrying a PLN paper label under the base, is one of those seldom seen unique items that will bring viewing and listening pleasure wherever you choose to display it.  A terrific tin composition musical locomotive and three coal tender cars that measure 9 inches across to the edge of the tree at the right hand side of the track and is 4 1/2 inches tall to the top of the locomotive.

The train musical plays, I’ve been working on the railroad by winding the key mechanism in the middle of the track. The tin sculpture, which revolves around the track as the music plays, has a terrific patina and is in fine vintage condition.

For all the railroad enthusiasts, this would be a unique focal display piece. An HTC, made in Hong Kong, foil label is attached under the base.

A pulley chain attached to the top loop of the basket enabled the miner to draw the basket up near the ceiling.

The basket is 14 inches square by 6 inches deep, about 16-1/2" high overall with lower hanger bar extended to the top of the handle. Attached to the side of the basket is an old wire soap holder, secured so it extends away from the basket and its contents. The bottom has six heavy steel loop feet which served as legs to keep the bottom of the basket off the floor and also as storage. At the bottom center of the basket is a swinging hanger from which pants or clothing could be hung,

The basket is in excellent structural condition. There is some powdery rust on the lower metal band, and the hanging chain is quite rusty but of course can be removed or replaced. The original owner's personal addition of the soap holder makes the basket that much more appealing.
