It lists hundreds of back marks and boasts many fine photographs of button backs, dies, and button related memorabilia. Its a true must for any collector and is well worth the modest price. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. A comprehensive listing and discussion of the makers and suppliers of military goods in America during the period from ca. 1785 to ca. 1915. Selected contractors are included for the period 1817-1865. This directory also covers selected makers and dealers of military goods in the Confederate States of America.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Military arms collectors and museum curators have long sought and prized the serviceable swords, sabers, cutlasses, bayonets, and bowie knives known as "Kenansville" weapons, denoting the small town in Duplin County, North Carolina where many of them were manufactured for the Confederacy. One of the most recognizable Kenansville staff and field swords features "CSA" (Confederate States of America) cast into the knucklebow of its brass guard. Extant Kenansville blades offer useful information about weaponry and technology during the Civil War, but less about the man--Louis Froelich, a Bavarian-born industrialist and entrepreneur--who designed and manufactured them. Highly skilled and ambitious, Froelich exploited old-world craftsmanship to make weapons and military equipment for both the North Carolina and Confederate quartermaster departments. In September 1861, he established an arms-manufacturing business known as the Wilmington Sword Factory on the Cape Fear River in southeastern North Carolina. When a destructive fire burned him out in early 1863, Froelich rebuilt his business in nearby Kenansville, the town with which he and his weapons are most closely identified. There he continued to produce weapons until the end of the war.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The Cyclopedia Edition is a greatly expanded revision of the 1996 sword book. Everything is new. The Cyclopedia Edition draws heavily on Japanese government documents now preserved as historical archives. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. This book is signed by the author, Kurt H Keller. Kurt H. Keller, Co-author of United States Army Shoulder Patches continues the definitive study of military insignia with Emblems of Honor, the first of a new series of titles which will document the development of U. S. shoulder patches from World War I to the early Cold War period. Covering a wide range of Armor, Cavalry, Tank Destroyer and Constabulary insignia, this new volume provides a valuable all-in-one reference for collectors and students of military history. With many never before seen images gleaned from extensive research and hundreds of detailed photos of a wide variety of rare and unusual insignia from some of the best private collections in the United States, this book is a must have for every patch collector or military historian. The highlights of this monumental work include many unique World War I Tank Corps. Insignia, the prototype 1st Cavalry Division patch and rare images from the personal albums of many senior officers. With a recently uncovered official drawing of the 1st Cavalry Division patch, this book finally sheds light on the confusing array of branch color variations approved for wear during the interwar period. Topping it all off is a handy series of charts and orders of battle that will help military insignia enthusiasts understand the evolution and role each unit played in World War II and the early Cold War.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Collector Bookstore Notes: This book covers U.S. military pocket knives via a color chronology, beginning in the early 1800s and ending with the high tech knives of the 21st century. Publishers Description: Silvey's latest contribution to the literature is a new book entitled Pocket Knives of the United States Military, and it's well worthy of the Silvey reputation. This book follows the format of the last two Silvey works, a well done hardcover book filled with beautiful full color photographs and brief descriptions of top notch knives. The overall size of the new book is smaller; reduced, as Mike tells me, to keep the pocketknives in proportion to their actual size. It also serves a secondary purpose in helping to keep the book's cost down to a remarkable $24.95. That's a mac-and-cheese price for sirloin, folks! Pocket Knives of the United States Military is organized into the following sections: Introduction, The First Folders, World War I, World War II, and Postwar (which covers knives up through the late 1980s). Coverage ranges from the expected pages of TL-29s and 4-blade utility knives to rare switchblades, demolition knives, OSS and CIA folders, and far, far more U.S. Navy rope knives than I ever knew existed. The photos are as beautiful as expected, and the knives pictured the finest that could be procured. A bibliography is included as an added bonus. Whether your interests lie in pocketknives or military knives, Pocket Knives of the United States Military is a beautiful and useful reference at a bargain price. Highly recommended.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. This long awaited book combines the most important examples from each of M.H. Cole's classic books on military knives into a single, well organized volume. The military knife collector no longer needs to track down elusive copies of the books popularly known as Cole I, Cole II, Cole III, and Cole IV. In short, this book is certain to become the new standard reference for U.S. military knife and bayonet colectors. Assembled with the assistance of military knife authority Mike Silvey, the new book has been organized for easy use and is illustrated throughout with Cole's well known and artful line drawings. If you don't have the series of M.H. Cole's books, this is a must-have volume; if you do, it's a worthwhile addition to your library simply to have all of the material gathered together in order and in a single volume.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The latest book by military knife authority Mike Silvey, is sure to be a big hit with military knife collectors. Silvey, author of two well-known books on U.S. military knives and co-author of two others, continues the theme begun with Knives of the U.S. Military in Vietnam in his new book on WWII knives. On the principle that a picture is worth a thousand words, Knives of the U.S. Military - World War II is a hardcover book filled with page after page of large, full-color photographs and short, informative descriptions, illustrating more than 425 knives in total. If our soldiers used it, it's probably in here - and can be readily located by using the handy index. Silvey's new book covers the entire range of America's WWII knives by dividing them into two categories - "Standard Issue" and "Beyond Standard Issue". The first group is obvious - Mark 1s, Mark 2s, and M3s, the most basic knives of the war. In all, 41 pages are spent showing these important knives in great detail, from the more common specimens to some extremely rare variants. The second category - almost 200 pages - consists of virtually everything else used by our forces during the war. From Aerial to Vince (a maker of deep sea divers' knives), Silvey covers the gamut, including a large number of unit issue knives such as the V-42 and "V-44", privately purchased knives such as the Case pigsticker, British-made knives such as smatchets and Fairbairn-Sykes knives, Australian-made knives, knives crafted from sword blades, GI-made knives, and knives by famous makers such as Bo Randall, John Ek, Frank Richtig, and Floyd Nichols. When coupled with Silvey's Vietnam book, collectors will find that Knives of the U.S. Military - World War II largely replaces the out-of-print and highly sought after book U.S. Military Knives 1941-1991 with more knives, more information, and better photography. It's a worthy addition to any collector's library, and the next best thing to owning some of the rare and pricey models photographed within.

H.M.S. Castor photo. Authentic old photograph depicting the crew on board the vessel in 1915-16.

Size: 5,5 x 3,5 inches. Fine condition.

HMS Castor was one of the Cambrian subclass of the C-class of light cruisers. Design of this class was based on the earlier cruisers HMS Champion and HMS Calliope, which, in turn, were based on the HMS Caroline class, using the same hull as the Carolines but with two funnels and maximum armor thickness of 4" as opposed to 3" in the Carolines. She was built by Cammell Laird, Birkenhead. Castor normally served as the flagship of the Commodore, and served as such at the Battle of Jutland, where she was the flagship of the eleventh destroyer squadron. Ten of her crew were casualties during the battle.

She was damaged but went on to survive the war. Considered obsolete by the 1930s, she was sold on July 30, 1936 and arrived at Rosyth in August that year for breaking up.  This fine vintage advertisement from 1942 for Coca Cola (Coke) is in very good condition but is slightly dirty.
