Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on one side it's a photo of the Spanish American War General Blanco & Arenas, with the other side having two photos of General Fitzhugh Lee and Captain Charles D. Sigsbee. Copy under the photo of General Blanco also refers to him as the Marquis of Pena-Plata.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!") and people associated with that war. No copyright dates appear on the book pages. There is a paragraph describing each ship under it's picture.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No tears, major bending or yellowing. There is a slight page bend in the white edging at the middle of one side, other very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book.

The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.

Relative to shipping, please note: While this is a book page/print, this item CAN NOT be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail per the post office. Please do not select this shipping option because we will have to contact you and change the shipping to something else, increasing your postage cost. The cheapest option for shipping this within the U.S. is via U.S.P.S. Parcel Post.

Selling 2 historically important items consisting of an 18K engraved head cane and an engraved head swagger stick, each belonging to the Gunner on the USS Newark, last US Navy warship to carry full set of sails and the first modern cruiser in the US fleet. The 18k solid gold head is profusely hand engraved with foliate designs and the inscription, Presented to Gunner, H B Soule, USN as a token of esteem by the gunner's mates of the USS Newark 1893-1896. The shaft appearsis gutta percha, like brown Union cases were made of, and tipped by a gold-plated iron-tipped ferrule. Soule must have been presented this stick just before the Newark was put in harbor for a remake.

The rosewood shaft swagger stick is engraved on the head Mas. Soule, Olangapo, P. I., a port in the Phillipines just west of Manila. This shows that Soule was reattached to the Newark when going to the conflicts in both the Phillipines and the Chinese Boxer rebellion. The swagger stick has, in addition to the sterling head, a fancy engraved sterling band and a finely made sterling tip.

USS Newark, a 4083-ton protected cruiser, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and commissioned in February 1891. She served in the Atlantic and European waters up to 1897, then commenced an extensive overhaul, which finished in time for her to operate off Cuba during the Spanish-American War. In 1899, she steamed around South America to the Pacific, and then went on to join the Asiatic Squadron.

Newark returned to the east coast by way of the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean in 1901, and commenced five years' duty in the western Atlantic and Caribbean areas. She then was employed as a Naval Militia training ship and as station ship at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Stricken from the Navy List in June 1912, Newark was transferred to the Public Health Service for use as a quarantine ship. During World War I, she was an annex to Naval Hospitals at Newport, Rhode Island, and New York. She was disposed of by sale in September 1926.

Jun. 10, 1900 — Vice Adm. Sir Edward Seymour, KCB, the senior foreign officer in northern China, led a force of 2, 129 men representing eight nationalities from Tientsin to reopen communications with Peking. The expedition included 112 American seaman and Marines from the cruiser USS Newark (C 1) under Captain Bowman H. McCalla. First attacked by Boxers on June 13, the column was forced to retire four days later after pushing to within 25 miles of Peking.

Newark operated off the Atlantic coast for ten months, taking part in maneuvers and exercises until detached 8 December at Norfolk Navy Yard. There she remained, undergoing post-shakedown overhaul until being assigned 11 March 1892 to the North Atlantic Squadron and sailing on the 14th for the West Indies. The cruiser operated in Caribbean waters and off the lower east coast, showing the flag in West Indies ports until returning to Norfolk 5 June where she was made flagship of Rear Admiral Andrew E. K. Benham, Commander of the newly formed South Atlantic Squadron, 25 June. She departed 17 July for Cádiz, Spain to participate in the ceremonies commemorating the 400th Anniversary of Columbus' sailing. Arriving on the 30th, she remained until 2 August then sailed for Genoa, Columbus' birthplace, arriving one month later to continue the celebration. Putting out from Genoa on the 25th, Newark cruised the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, visiting many ports until arriving 11 February 1893 at Cádiz to take in tow a full size reproduction of caravel Nina and sailing on the 18th for home.

Transferred to the Naval Review Fleet for temporary duty 1 March, the cruiser arrived Havana 21 March, parting with Nina there, thence sailing to Hampton Roads and New York where she picked up the caravel once more and proceeded down the St. Lawrence River to Quebec, leaving the little ship there 11 June and returning to Norfolk 22 June. Newark next sailed 20 September, this time for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to protect American interests, arriving 20 October and remaining until 1 April 1894. The warship then operated off the South American coast with the South Atlantic Squadron, making one cruise to South Africa from August to October 1894 and another the same time the following year, before returning to Norfolk 27 April 1896. Assigned to the North Atlantic Station 4 May, she joined her squadron at New York 25 June and engaged in patrol duty and exercises off the southeastern coast until decommissioning at Norfolk 6 March 1897.

Following extensive overhaul, Newark recommissioned 23 May 1898, shortly after the declaration of war on Spain, Captain A. S. Barker in command. She sailed 13 June for Key West and then Cuba, joining the blockade 30 June. Cruising in Cuban waters throughout the summer, the warship bombarded the port of Manzanillo 12 August and on the following day accepted its surrender. After the Battle of Santiago, she participated in the final destruction of Admiral Cervera's fleet through bombardment of the burned hulks. Newark returned to New York 26 November 1898.

Departing New York 23 March 1899, the cruiser steamed down the coast of South America on patrol, stopping at numerous ports along the way. In the middle of her cruise, 7 April, she was ordered to proceed through the Straits of Magellan to San Francisco. The ship, low on coal, was forced to put into Port Low, Chile, from 31 May to 22 June to cut wood(!) for fuel. Finally arriving Mare Island Navy Yard 4 September, Newark underwent repairs and then sailed 17 October via Honolulu for the Philippines arriving Cavite 25 November. The warship took station off Vigan, Luzon, landed troops for garrison duty, then moved on to Aparri 10 December, receiving the surrender of insurrectionists in the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, and Bataan.

On 19 March 1900, she sailed for Hong Kong to rendezvous with monitor Monadnock 22 March and convoy that ship to Cavite, arriving 3 April and staying there until sailing for Yokohama 24 April, arriving 3 days later. The ship then hoisted the flag of Rear Admiral Louis Kempff, Assistant-Commander of the Asiatic Station and sailed 20 May for China to help land reinforcements to relieve the legations under siege by the Boxers at Peking. Arriving Tientsin 22 May, Newark operated in that port and out of Taku and Chefoo, protecting American interests and aiding the relief expedition under Vice Admiral Seymour, R.N., until sailing at the end of July for Kure, Japan, and then Cavite where she hoisted the pennant of the Senior Squadron Commander in the Philippines. She sailed for home in mid-April 1901, via Hong Kong, Ceylon and Suez, arriving Boston late July 1901. She decommissioned there 29 July.

Here is a wonderful COMMEMORATIVE COLLECTIVE DEPICTING VITORY AT SANTIAGO.

IT DISPLAYS BATTLING SHIPS AT SANTIAGO HARBOR. AN 1/8 (ONE EIGHTH CENT) STAMP FROM 1898. AS A COMMEMORATIVE ISSUED 1986 BY FLEETWOOD, CHEYENNE, WYOMING, U.S.A. PREM. 26B.

VICTORY AT SANTIAGO

PRESENTATION CARD

The mist enveloping Santiago Harbor had just burned away on the morning of Sunday, 3 July 1898. Only church services and the reading of the Articles of War broke the routine for the American Blockage Fleet. But at 0931, the flash and thunder of Spanish guns ruptured the morning calm. The American Fleet sounded General Quarters. In a desperate attempt to break the blockade, Spanish Admiral Cervera ordered his three armored cruisers and two destroyers to dash toward freedom. The American battleships U.S.S. Texas, Brooklyn, and Iowa, hotly pursued the Spanish. U.S.S. Texas " with cascades of water pouring away from her bow and guns firing, " charged directly at the Spaniards first. Farther east, the U.S.S. Orgegon, and Indiana cut off the enemy fleet from escape. Trapped and unable to match the superior American firepower, the Spanish fleet crumbled. The Spanish flagship Infanta Maria Teresa, her decks aflame, ran aground: the Oquendo " rolled and staggered like a drunkard. " The fight took only three hours. One American was killed and another seriously wounded, while the Spanish ships " were like slaughtering pens " with over three hundred dead and 151 wounded. The American victory assured the end of Spain's three-century grasp on the Caribbean.

Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with antique prints on each side of the page. On one side there are four photos that are views of the USS Maine's crew off duty: one of the Firemen & Coal Passers, one of gunners standing on deck; one of men enjoying "Evening Amusements" which is playing cards, and one of gunners by their torpedo tube (please note that there are other photos from the USS Maine in items #1009, 1010, 1011 and 1012). On the other side of the page is a drawing of "Havana Harbor and the Maine Anchorage".

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). There is a paragraph describing the pictures at the bottom of each page.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No major bending or yellowing. There is some slight browning at the edges of the page with the four photos with much more pronounced/darker browning/dirt/smudging on the right edge of the Havana Harbor page and a dark dot in the picture on this page. There is some page edge and corner edge wear/tip tear in one corner/bending in another corner and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed).

Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain" published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with antique prints on each side of the page; on one side there are two prints of ships, the Protected Cruiser Cincinnati (copy states that this ship was commanded by Captain Colby M. Chester) and the Unprotected Cruiser Detroit (copy states that this ship was commanded by James H. Dayton). On the other side there are two prints of guns, "Practice with a rapid-fire gun" showing gunners of the protected cruiser Atlanta at target practice with a one-pound rapid-fire machine gun; and "Drilling with a Gatling gun" showing a pratice drill on the wooden school-ship Enterprise with a gang of cadets at exercise with a Gatling gun.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). There is a paragraph describing the ships or the weapons underneath the bottom photo on each page.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. There are some defined curved creases within the page in the pictures of the Cincinnati and the Gatling Gun (they're on opposite sides) that may have been made in manufacture from their ragged style (or something was rubbed on the page) and result in white dotting or light lines on the pictures (not really bad, but there). There is other very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). There is a touch of browning towards the page edges (nothing bad). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book.

Excellent condition black & white photographs or pictures, on full page measuring about 13 inches x 10 3/4 inches. No major tears, bending, or yellowing. There is very minor page edge wear (corner bending, other edge handling wear, all very minor), some stray dots and expected overall handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book, the most prominent small crease occurs in the white margin area). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book, and slight browning at the edges of the pages from age. We would consider all of this minor, and we judge that most or all of this would not be noticeable framed.

A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, the U.S.S. Maine, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc. May also be of interest to those collecting pieces relating to Black Americana or items depicting African Americans serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or Navy in particular.

The vintage book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). Under the Torpedo Boat picture it says, "Copyrighted, 1897, by William H. Rau. There is no copyright on the New York page. There is also a paragraph describing each ship under it's picture.

Excellent overall condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. There is a crease extending from the bottom edge of the page into the picture (about 3 1/2 inches long) which is likely from page handling or turning. There are no tears or yellowing. In the paragraph under each picture it explains that these two steamships 'have been' chartered by the U.S. government, and at the time the book was printed, were being refitted to be used in the U.S. Navy as an armed cruiser and flying cruiser, respectively.

The vintage book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). No cpoyright dates appear on the book pages. As said prior, there is also a paragraph describing each ship under it's picture, giving size details, history, etc. In the St. Paul description it states that when ready for active service, "her captain will be Charles D. Sigsbee, the intrepid commander of the unfortunate "Maine," whose courage may be counted on to seek revengeful redress for the loss of his ship and gallant crew."

Very nice overall condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. There are large creases which can be faintly seen going through the pictures on these pages, a large vertical 2 lined soft crease (as if the page was accidentally bent in the book), and some curved horizontal creases which are hard edged (from the look of these, it's possible these were in the paper when manufactured, but we don't know). When matted and framed we don't think these will be visible, but as a loose piece of ephemera you can see these when held in the light. There are very minor page or corner edge wear and other expected handling wear for a book page (the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book, also judged to be not noticeable framed). There is also the expected uneven edge and corner where the page was taken from the book.

Excellent overall condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. 1898 Naval Ship Print, USS Philadelphia, $12.00

Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on one side it's the Coast-line Battleship Indiana, with the other the Forward Deck of the First-Class Battleship Indiana (please note that there is another photo from the USS Indiana in item #1282). The deck photo includes "the heavy guns protruding from the forward turret", which are stated to be breech-loading rifles of a calibre of 13 inches, 40 feet long.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). Under the photos on both sides there is a copyright line, "Copyrighted, 1895, by William H. Rau." There is a paragraph describing the ship or deck underneath each photo.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No major bending or yellowing. There is a tear in the white margin area, about 2 1/4 inches in length starting at the edge of the page, but this is sufficiently distanced from the photo or description (about 1 1/4 inches away) that it could be easily covered by a mat when framing. There is very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed), and on the ship photo, some light brown vertical line dirt at the bottom in the white margin area (also coverable by a mat).
