Militaria: US Civil War

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Militaria: US Civil War?

At first glance one might think this to be just another antique saw. Something a carpenter

Might have used to build an item out of wood.

That image is quickly dispersed after reading the marking found on the bow of this saw.

The doctors at ‘St. Catherine’s’ did not build tables or chairs with this heavy old saw. Rather they used it to remove limps that were beyond any hope of saving. Removing leg or arms required a large saw like this to cut through the bones. Doing do also required a strong stomach. Just thinking of such a brutal operation makes me shiver.

Although this saw is marked as being owned by St Catherine’s Can., It was purchased from a Civil War enthusiast in Virginia, which leads to the conclusion that there is a high likelihood this saw and the doctor who used it, left his post at St. Catherine’s Hospital and made his way south to help fill the enormous need for surgeons and doctor to help treat the wounded and dying men who fought on both sides during our country’s Civil War. Chances are this gruesome tool of medicine was used time and time again at some make shift field hospital within earshot of some battle between North and South.

I have seen pictures of the tools and the hospitals and one thing is for certain. We can all be thankful for the hospitals available to us now.

Saw measures 22 long by 7 at the highest and has a well used, but still sharp 15.5 inch blade.

This is a set of 6 black and white real photo postcards from the 1950's showing the Sharpsburg Rifles Unit reenactors in battle. The photography was done by Ament Studios, Braddock Heights, Md. The back of each card gives a brief description of the photo on the front. The battlefield in the background looks much different than it does today. (We live nearby). Apparently they were not called reenactors in the fifties, as the back of each card refers to them as a "Restoration of an original Civil War unit".

All 6 postcards are in very good condition with sharp corners, no creases and are very clean.

I have listed two flintlocks today. Now I am listing the flint that was found with them.

It has the leather protective piece that was used with it. Obviously, I do not know how old the piece of leather is, so I am just telling you it was with it when the weapons were found.

It is in good condition.

If you have questions, please e-mail.

Thanks.

Priced according to condition.  Here is one of the most well recognized spoon and wreath type belt buckles worn during the times of the Civil War. This antique Virginia two piece brass belt buckle has a nice, even age patina that doesn't burn the tongue as ones that have been chemically aged to look old always do. Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia wore this and other buckles and plates for thweir home state of Virgina with fierce pride and the utmost confidence. Confidence in their General, in their cause, and in their dreams of forming a new government to replace the one run by influences mostly of Northern desires.

I've also attached a photo of this same buckle from Kirchner's book of Civil War buckles and plates, which is pretty much the exact match to the piece shown in this listing.

If you lived in the time of the Civil War and carried a shotgun, you also carried one of these old tools. This is a measuring device used to measure out a correct portion of Black Powder when loading shotgun shells. Depending what you planned on hunting, you would add an appropriate amount of black powder to each sheel. This device made keeping the loads equal a whole lot easier. Made by DE Co. Torrington, Conn  Imagine sitting close to a campfire, surrounded by fellow soldiers who are all wondering if the next day might be their last. This is a typical Game Box that was carried from campsite to campsite by many a young soldier from North to South. Dominoes, Dice, Jacks and original boxes. Civil War entertainment.  Another great old Shadowbox edition would be this relic part of the leather scabbard off a Civil War sword. Great coloring. Tons of potential.   If you know someone who loves to take small items and turn them into a great display by placing them into a shadowbox, these parts of an actual Civil War Pinfire Pistol will really put a smile on their face. Items shown are included.

Civil War Games & Wooden Games Boxes $98.00

Talk about a neat old piece of American History. This very useful old wooden box was once used as a safety precaution for the handling of TNT, or Dinamite. The sliding lid was lost sometime ago, but this near little wooden box will look great in your office or family room, will serve as a useful and decorative container for anything from DVD's to Dominoes and will certainly generate more than it's fair share of interesting conversations. Meaures 15 x 7 x 6 inches. Wow. Boom!  If you are really into using real antique items as decorations, here's a great old item to add to your medicine chest. This is a part bottle of Parke Davies Heart Tonic Pills. The ingredients are much to old to be consumed by humans, but the bottle and the label will make an excellent gift for someone with unique tastes in decorating.  Not for Human Consumption...

For those of you who love to decorate with rel antique items, this old box of Boston Spiced Bitters is a great irtem for kitchen or bathroom. The label tells it all. A unique gift item.   This neat old stonewear bottle was purchased decades ago from a little shop south of Gettysburg. These Two-Toned Ginger Beer Bottles were almost as common in the days of the Civil War as are the aluminum cans that our soda comes in today. This bottle has a slightly tapered lip with one ring below it and stands just over 8 inches tall. The glazing colors have faded slightly with time and the bottle shows quite a number of small flaws that appeared with the bottle being fired. I think every Civil War collection should have one of these old beer bottles and this one is a fine example of Civil War era crockery bottles.

A Federal oval US cartrisdge box plate (Reg. 1839)made using the Dingee dies that featured the tall, more narrow, round based U & S. This old box plate is in the same, unpolished condition as when it was found. The plate retains a great looking age patina that I think would benefit from a little gun oil, but that's a decision I'll leave to it's new owner. The piece was purchased many years ago from a private collection of Civil War artifacts. It still has the original lead backing, but the loops have rusted away long ago. The US box plate was made using the same molds that formed the US belt buckle plates. It measures approximately 3 7/16 inches across and 2.25 inches wide and other than a few bumps and bruises, the cartridge box plate is in very good condition. Please see the photos and if you have any questions, feel free to contact Picker’s . Thank you, JM

Free shipping with purchase.  An original Civil War Eagle Breast plate that was purchased from a resident of Taneytown, Maryland. The little town is located less than 15 miles due south of Gettysburg,Pa. and less than a day's march from several other famous Civil War Battlefields. This is the WH Smith pattern breastplate used by the Federal Army as well as many of the States. Most were made between 1850 and the state of the war, thus it was worn by both Union and Confederate soldiers. It was to the leather shoulder strap of the soldier's cartridge box in about the area as the man's heart. That was likely the reason the insignia was commonly called a breastplate. This Civil War Breastplate atill has the original lead backling that gave it most of it's strength, but the pair of loops by which it was attached to the shoulder strap have rusted away with time to become no more than bumps in the lead backing. The condition is as found, making this very nice looking Eagle Breat Plate a great representative piece of historic Civil War accoutrements and a fine addition to your collection.  I have to say, the image of Louisiana's Pelican, hovering over and protecting her offspring has always been my favorite of all the Civil War era state seals. This gorgeous die stamped brass plate is one you will seldom see, let alone have the opportunity to own, so don't miss this chance.

The plate depicts a Pelican feeding her younfg and was likely made prior to the start of the Civil War, but worn by many a proud Louisiana soldier during the length of the great conflict. A motto can be seen stamped inside the framing ring and it reads, 'Union, Justie and Confidence'. A really fantastic piece of Confederate history. Free shipping in the USA. Confederate Civil War, Louisiana Brass b $1377.00

Here we have a rare combination of authentic Civil War pieces collected together at Harper's Ferry, during a building restoration project that took place in the late 1980's. The beautifully preserved brass crossed swords Cavalry insignia was found in a cubby hole under a window opening, wrapped up in a piece of old cloth. Along n with the crossed swords and nearly missed by the young man who made the discovery was this cloth collar star insignia which I believe is in fact the single star that would have been attached to the collar board of a Major in the Confederate Cavalry. This is one of thw rarest of finds. Cloth insignais that were worn in the days of the Civil War are rarely ever found. The years have left only dust or unrecognizable remnants of most cloth pieces, but because the piece was safely tucked away in a dry and dark place, it survived the decades it spent in hiding and can now be a prized addition to your Civil War Collection. This is one of the few Confederate cloth insignias I have ever been lucky enough to locate and I am certain you'll agree with me on the value of this very rare and special find.

Free US shipping is also included with purchase.  Here we have another great looking Civil War relic purchased near Taneytown, Maryland, just south of the battlefields at Gettysburg. The plate would have been worn on the sword belt and since it is a model 1864, it would surely have been issued to a Union soldier. A nice, as found piece of Civil War history. Free US shipping included with the sale priced Civil War belt plate.  Here is an original Civil War relic brass two piece belt buckle imported from England and used by several Confederate militias. The plate has the same design on the face as the one shown on page 332 in the Kerksis book on Plates and Buckles of the American Military, as well as the same central design in buttons of the CS staff officers and in particular, on page 135, item 8 of the Howard Crouch book, Civil War Artifacts.

The buckle has a great looking age patina and even, uniformity to the wear patterns.

This buckle was part of a very extensive collection of Civil War pieces that obviously took the original owner most of his life to gather together. I have quite a good selection of different pieces from this collection listed and will from time to time be adding more to the shop. I think there were only two pieces in this entire collection in quantities of two. For the most part the items I have to offer from this collector's long held stash are one of one and are the only one I have unless noted otherwise. In other words, if you like something, please don't wait too long to buy it, or someone may beat you to it. The Confederate pieces are especially hard to come by and when they are gone, they are more than likely gone for good.

I'm offering a number of these rare finds at Sale Prices and in most cases all of these old accoutrements also give you the bonus of Free shipping inside the USA; buyers outside the US, please ask me for a shipping quote.  Here we have an original Civil War Artillery Cannons hat badge. This is a branch of service insignia worn by artillery soldiers and was part of a large collection purchased over twenty years ago from a Frederick, Maryland Civil War enthusiast. The insignia retains a rich and varied age patina. The original brass pins used to attach the insignia to the front of the hat are both in tack. This is a very nice, authentic Civil War piece that can be a great gift for your favorite Civil War Enthusiast.

A nice original brass Hardee Hat War Eagle badge or insignia that got its name from Judge William Hardee, a member of the Officer's Council who adopted the new style hat this badge was used on. When the Civil War broke out, Judge Hardee, a southern loyalist, joined the Confederacy and served as a General in the Confederate Army. This badge has a wonderful age patina and shows very little damage. It is missing on of its two fastening pins off the back, but more than makes up for the missing pin with its high condition.

The War 1861-1865 Currier and Ives Print $8.95

Vintage c.1960s Gettysburg (PA) Battlefield souvenir creamer. Very nice graphics, very light wear of the gold, no chips or cracks, light crazing but not the ugly kind. 5 in. high. Made in USA. Great for any Civil War collection!  This is a book written by Private Edward Chase with an introduction by General C.H. Howard, printed in 1891 by R.S. Peale & Company of Chicago, entitled The Memorial Life of General William Tecumseh Sherman.

The book is not a bad read, it is just not in perfect condition. The back cover has evidence of either getting wet or being in a damp area at some point in its life. There is a tear at the bottom center area of the title page.

engraved silver six point star with pin back, 1st lieut. Company A , 195th Regiment, PA Volunteers, recruited in Berks County, PA  Here is a battlefield dug remnant from our Civil War. We have absolutely no doubt in the authenticity of this piece. The style and composition of the plate closely matches various handmade Confederate plates and buckles in the Kerksis book on civil war plates of the American Military. There are so many known variations of this type belt or box plate, it is impossible to exactly identify the maker, but our research, along with testimony by a relative of the man who originally found this piece, we have concluded this plate is an actual confederate relic. The piece was purchased from the relative of a private collector, now deceased. As you can see in the photos, the plate has neither lead filler or hooks filling the back and has been otherwise flattened and abused by time and other causes that will remain unknown. None the less, this is a rare find and still a worthwhile piece of civil war history. The man who found it lived in the country not far from Hagerstown Maryland and claimed to have found this plate, as well as several other related items, while exploring along the banks of the Antietam Creek. The general location he described is close to the place where fighting took place. For years this plate remained glued to a plaque covered in red felt and displayed by its owner. You can still see a few tiny bits of that felt if you look closely at the plate's back. At some point after the collector's death, the display fell apart and pieces were left behind when the property was abandoned.
