Old portrait postcard of Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph ( Franz Josef). Scarcer portrait postcard, published by Leo Stainer, Innsbruck.

Color lithograph, unused, violet stamp at reverse.

Franz Josef was crowned Emperor of Austria in 1848 at age 18. By the summer of 1914 he would be in the 66th year of his reign. He was also crowned King of Hungary in 1867 in an attempt to calm the situation with the problematic Magyars (Hungarians). This worked and the Dual Monarchy would last until his death in 1916.

Though he was Emperor and King, his life was not without its trials and sorrows. Early on as Emperor he lost major wars to France (1848) and Prussia (1866). His brother, Maximilian, was executed in Mexico. His son, Crown Prince Rudolph, committed suicide in 1889 followed by his wife's assassination by an anarchist in Geneva (1897). He had numerous difficulties with his nephew and heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who would be assassinated by Serbian nationalists on 28-Jun-1914 at a place called Sarajevo.  This is a nice piece of trench art from WWI, dated 1918 on the blade of one side and the word Souvenir on the opposite side. The handle is made from a bullet which has on the end DM 3 16 S67. The bullet also has a flower and the word France on it.

The condition is very nice, with great patina. There is one blue/green spot on the bullet handle which is on the flower area. The length of the piece is approximately 5-5/8 inches.

1918: Postcard published for the Red Cross war relief program. Unused postcard in fine condition.

It shows Empress Zita and the youngest Prince.

Zita of Bourbon-Parma (1892 - 1989) was the last Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary.

Zita married Karl of Austria in 1911 and in the following decade gave birth to eight children, starting with Crown Prince Otto (born 1912), the last head of the Habsburg dynasty.

She was accused by critics of being behind her exiled husband's attempts to regain his throne of Hungary, where the monarchy had been re-established under a regent after the end of the First World War, and from which he had not abdicated. After his death in 1922 she left Madeira but continued living abroad. In old age, from 1962 onward, she lived in Switzerland.

In 1982, the Austrian government granted Zita the right to re-enter Austria although she had never renounced the Habsburg claim to the throne. After her death in Zizers in 1989, she was buried in Vienna's Kapuzinergruft, the crypt in the city centre which had served for centuries as the Habsburg family's burial place, in what was in effect a state funeral, attended by leading politicians, state officials and international representatives from states, including a representative of Pope John Paul II.  WW1: b/w postcard depicting 5 soldiers mourning and saying good bye at a grave of a comrade.

Artist signed F. Kuderna.

Austrian Red Cross War Relief Office in Austria in ca. 1918 A few minor ink spots at the reverse otherwise fine condition.  Be sure to see all the photos. This amazing piece was used by WWI German soldiers to lug 3 artillery shells to the front. It is made of wood and wicker. Not sure if wicker is the right term, but it is heavy and interwoven like wicker. It has its original canvas handle and straps as well as the canvas and leather straps that secured the metal top. Even the brass catches that held the straps in place are there.

I saw one almost identical to this at the Verdun Museum in France. And recently found a photograph from WWI hosted on the web at flickr.com/photos/29007475@N08/3485758060/

Condition is remarkable. Looks like it has been carefully stored since 1918. It is tight and sturdy. The metal top is worn, but has part of its original paper label which is in German. The leather strap that held the metal top on one side is separated. There are a few small stains on the wood, but nothing major at all.

Size: 20" high x 14 ½" wide x 5" deep.

Here is a poignant reminder of the destruction of the First World War. This shrapnel-shredded French canteen was recovered from the battlefields in France. Someone stuck a commemorative poppy into the spout and we’ve left it there.

SALE! ORIG. $40 ... SALE $25  Aug. 10-12-13, 1914. The First World War was only days old as the huge German Army marched through Belgium and into France. These three front sections of the Atlanta Georgian capture the growing calamity engulfing Europe. It’s interesting that an Atlanta newspaper so far from France would be so dominated by the events three years before the U.S. entered the war. Newspaper coverage was how Americans learned about world events in the days before radio and television.

You can feel the growing drama as each day passes.

A very unusual and very fine WWI German medal commemorating the SMS Moltke, a battlecruiser that fought with the German High Seas Fleet in WWI.

Size: 1 1/4" diameter.

One side has a great relief of the battlecrusier steaming into action. "S.M.S. MOLTKE" is in relief above the ship.

The other side of the medal has a handsome relief portrait of Prussian general Moltke the Elder. Around the outer edge are the words "ERST WAEGEN=DANN WAGEN MOLTKE." At the base of the relief is the name "Kuhl" which is likely the artist. Moltke was famous for important military victories against Austria in 1866 and during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.

The medal has a nice weight and appears to be made of bronze, but not absolutely sure. It is nicely made with excellent detail. I assume it had a ribbon, but there is not one with the medal.

Condition: Very good. We have not cleaned this medal at all. There are a few darker areas on the surface, but I don’t know what they are.

The famous S.M.S. Moltke, launched in 1911, survived four hits at the battle of Jutland and was hit by several torpedoes in other operations during the war. At the end of the war, she was one of the captured German ships that was scuttled at Scapa Flow.

I do know that German Imperial Navy items are scarce. This is a wonderful original medal honoring a specific ship that played a role in important WWI naval actions.
